It's like that in all of Japan. There's a reason why call it "black" companies when it comes to screwing and harassing their workers. You think it's bad in the US, it's even worse in Japan and a lot of workers don't even speak up. They afraid for their job if they speak up. Since they can't fire you without cause they do this with a lot of older workers where they essentially send them to an isolated place where they stare at wall or do repetitive tasks that has no meaning to the company so that you quit and don't get unemployment benefits.

It's not a conspiracy theory, it's their work culture. They think it's noble to work yourself to death, and when they get treatment it's so they can continue working first & foremost. (Dr Blackjack's author in his death bed: _"Please let me get back to work"_ -- bruh) The gov was basically offering to do something about the manga/anime industry but the workers would rather just "work harder" (a toxic work culture for sure), but partially because they're considered so disposable most of the time, and some companies like MAPPA will even outsource internationally nowadays to meet deadlines * For the really long-running shows I think it's often just aging and a diet & lifestyle that leads to illness, they also love their alcohol

It's crazy how part of me is laughing but then part of me is mourning since I've heard of some mangaka/animators hands being raw with discoloured open flesh and dried blood, unable to spend time with their families, becoming depressed/suicidal, struggling to support their families and even dying at their desks. It may not be my right to speak on Japanese culture but when people are literally dying I feel so sad that partaking in my favourite hobby supports these evil and predatory black companies.

Sad thing is, it's tough for manga artists too. I see some people saying "just read the manga, it's better anyway" but manga artist have it just as bad sometimes. The only difference is that they may choose to work from home and hire assistants to help with things like background imaging or other things. They also have a LOT of pressure to get their manga out at a certain time and make sure it's good and as an artist myself, it's awful drawing for hours in a set position for so long. I remember watching an interview for a manga artist and he barely even got to see his wife and kids. He even had to buy his own separate place for work smh. Much respect to them Edit: also, I know they choose to make a manga themselves but they are still under a lot of pressure due to intake from fans and companies often rushing them to finish at a certain time. I've seen people say that companies like shounen jump are getting better as far as giving them more breaks so that's good. I hope the same can happen for animators one day
@laurocoman2 жыл бұрын
And then you have Togashi, who basically decided to drop the assistant numbers as low as possible and covertly told Shonnen Jump to fuck off. We don't get HxH but we got an author with a lot self-respect who works at human pace.

@obeyabe86132 жыл бұрын
You're looking at a different thing since madhouse at that time was really a studio that made passion projects and obviously there were reasonable time schedules since there wasn't high demand for animes. Mid 2000s madhouse was essentially MAPPA in this era, keep pumping out animes without having enough staff to do them, and good portion of the talented ones quit to join other studios. Nowadays I barely hear the studio Madhouse or whenever I do, their animes are usually outsourced to other studios which yes are bangers but madhouse really hasn't done much to the project (OPM s1 is a good example)

I want to mention a studio called Kyoto Animation. They are the best. In terms of both Animation and Work. Environment. They don't outsource their production stuffs. Also holds a light novel Competition every year. A fact. A studio like Wit, Mappa, Bones take about 35 to 40 animators for 1 episode. On theother hand KyoAni only requires 6 animators for one episode. Their scheduling, work circle is really praise worthy. They released some of the most heartfelt, tear jerker shows with some of the best Animation in the industry. The recent Arson attacl really shook the whole industry. And KyoAni managed to raise over 2 million dollars in donations for recovery and for the families of the affected people. Really hope all the studios see this and learn how a good space can improve their work and workers.
