Hi all, I'm back from a little break from content after spending some time building up the Orion website (linked below) and thinking about ways to share philosophy in a way that's better for the viewer.
In this video, I go over a short passage from Seneca and his essay On the Shortness of Life. Specifically looking at desire and vice, and why people find it difficult to build discipline and beat their passions.

Hello, it is a pleasure to meet you. I have been studying Stoicism for a few years now and can attribute a few improvements in myself and my life directly to those studies. I'm not one that frequently makes comments online, especially ones of a personal nature. But I wanted to let you know that your early Orion posts were a major part of what influenced me to start on this journey. Sincerely, Thank You!

I follow this way of life for a number of years. The major things acquired as a result are: liberation of dependencies and resulting stress, indescribable sense of freedom and great health as a result. Beware guys, this state of mind makes you very attractive to women...don't let desires control you. These type of teaching is especially valuable for people under self-imposed stress. Thank you.

This feels like a fireside chat with a Philosopher instead of a President. I thought it was relaxing and easy to reflect upon. Thank you.

Absolutely love your channel and have done for ages now. I think the point about being honest with yourself rings so true. Where I'm from we say people in glass houses shouldnt throw stones and ive been applying that to myself a lot. Often choosing to keep my mouth closed rather than say anything at all. My partner is a few years younger than me and theres a 8 year gap. When I think about how I acted when I was her age I quickly tell myself to quit my moaning as I was much worse at life at the same age. Reflection and self honesty (as long as you arent always beating yourself up) are some of the most healing ways of moving forward. Thank you as always for your stupendous content. 😊

I believe everything can become a vice; reading, learning, even philosophy and meditation. Some thing may help one person while that same thing may be a detriment to another. Its easy to fool yourself but I think its just as easy for someone else to use vice as an excuse to change something they do not like about you. Just wanted to share.

For me vices are traits that are detrimental to character, for example greed, anger, lust, envy, gluttony, and pride. Our actions and habits can feed these vices. For example we can read to better ourselves, or we can read to learn how to manipulate people for power.

I think it's a necessity to study the source material if you really want to absorb what Stoicism has to teach. That is one of the reasons I have enjoyed your content, that it consists mostly of quotes from the source material itself. That said, I do enjoy this type of in depth analysis of certain passages and would definitely like to see more in the future 👍

I think discussions based off of the source material specifically is the best way to benefit from stoicism. Personally, the problem with KZbin Stoicism is the attempt to make it relevant to modern specifics. The AI generated 'power' voices and modern social issues that get added into some Stoicism content takes away from the root meaning. Studying and discussing the source material allows the ideas to shape your actions. A lot of Stoic videos are targeting a modern male audience that feels like they have no control over their life which is good and something that Stoicism can help with though I think discussing the source material and understanding the concept can help people apply it to anything. I think what is missing is breaking down the bits of source material like you have in this video. I'd like to see more of that. It's almost like once you understand the concept of Stoicism, KZbin has nothing more to offer. Content strays so far off from Stoic virtues that a lot of accounts are grasping at straws to make content when the content is already there, in the source material.

I agree with what you say about the more recent Stoic content. It seems to be a shallow AI generated version of the philosophy. Thanks for your message, more of the source material to come 👍

With due respect, your voice doesn't match your age. I used to think this man must be 50+ yrs old. Really surprising to see that young men like yourself are interested and taking forward the stoic principles. Thankyou for all your videos.
