It’s amazing that the Spartans, a war breed in its purest form, actually gave very profound advice on ruling with compassion and sympathy: “Rule over your people as fathers rule over their sons”… “We will be impenetrable as long as none of you consider yourself more important than others…” A reason why the modern politicians all fxxk up
@comandantethorn99292 жыл бұрын
it probably has to do with morale, you have to create a really specific kind of society and push very specific values to make war-ing constantly like actually be feasable, like if they hadnt built their entire culture around it, if kids werent instilled with these ideas of honor glory valor courage comradery and on and on then their society wouldve died much quicker, their whole society was tough, the idea that your MOM of all people would tell you something like "Come back with your shield or come back on it", its basically a threat, because if you come back alive without your shield, for one you will never be seen with respect again, youre no longer a spartan and your mother will most likely disown you, its brutal.
@juusopollari88582 жыл бұрын
@@comandantethorn9929 It is brutal in one perspective, totally. But if you want to really really extreme expression of some value, it has to be like that. And if one has innerstood that one is spiritual being and death is not the ultimate bad thing, it might help understand the more caring side of the idea too. And that kind of extremes also makes men to value their womens to the extreme.

“As a Spartan, return with your shield, or on it, But never without it.” To return with your shield was to be victorious in life. To return on your shield was to be victorious in death. But to return without your shield meant you lost the battle but were still alive. This was often assumed to mean that they were cowards who lost their shields and fled from combat to save their own lives. Such men are not worthy to call themselves Spartans and will never be considered or respected as such again. And so to the woman of Sparta, they have lost their sons as no true son of Sparta would return without their shield from a victorious battlefield.

I've been contemplating for some years now about why these 'ancient warrior' themes are so attractive to so many of us in contemporary times. Aside from the horrific realities that inevitably took place, my strongest hypothesis is that we experience a kind of kinship inside these stories. These communities seem intimate when compared to modern times. In today's urban life we see countless faces on a daily basis, but most of us wouldn't take a bullet for them. I'm not suggesting that nobody would do heroic deeds; I'm saying that there's no comradery. I also think that comradery is as rare as wisdom, because it's not something you can just make. If I'm correct about the sense of comradery, kinship, and intimacy being what we crave from these stories, I can think of one scenario where those elements arose naturally. It would require the decay of modern powerful nations, the promotion of tribes, and the everlasting sense of danger. The bloodshed would harden those who witness it. The high frequency of death would likely make everyone more patient with those tribesmen who annoy us. The scarcity of resources, craftsmen, and strong warriors would be invaluable, therefore everyone *must* pull their weight. Disclaimer: I'm not suggesting that I want such a risky life. I'm merely speculating what the natural order of mankind may look like.

This quote resonates with our modern geocentric times. "It was natural for [Spartan women] to think and speak as Gorgo, the wife of Leonidas, is said to have done, when some foreign lady, as it would seem, told her that the women of Lacedaemon were the only women of the world who could rule men; "with good reason," she said, "for we are the only women who bring forth men" Now, what I get from that quote is that Gorgo is telling the woman that Spartan women have the freedoms they have because they give birth to real men who aren't threatened by them. In the 300 film they had Gorgo tell this to a man instead of a woman because they wanted it to be directed towards men for feminist empowerment, but it was actually directed towards women because it is them who misunderstood how Spartan women move with their men: they know their role.

"Come back with your shield, or come back on it." Thinking back on the incredible nobility Spartans had is amazing. Now that these are modern times, that will never happen due to the level of distrust in race, sex, religion, beliefs, etc. Hell, talking even divides people. Spartans would most likely be disappointed in us.

@kagato23 Жыл бұрын
@@MR-nl8xr then Alexander the Great did it anyway, and when he sent shit back to Athens said “all the Greeks EXCEPT SPARTANS” send these treasures home. Then the Persians hired the Spartans when he kept going against them. He kicked their ass, killed their king, and said “you won’t join? Better join now.” They joined. By this point since citizenship could only be inherited, the Spartans were massively outnumbered by their slaves. There wasn’t even a big rebellion so much as people just left and they didn’t have the numbers to make them get back in line. Turns out only being warriors means your fucked when the farmer just say “no.” Spartans were a failed model.
@MR-nl8xr Жыл бұрын
@@kagato23 You are talking about a different time than I am. 300 bc (the time of Alexander) was no longer the "real" Sparta, by then the Battle of Leuctra had already sealed the fate of Lacedaemon and introduced a new generation of Spartan soldiers that were not much like the "original" Lacedaemons (Spartans). Also I have no idea who you were saying did what after your first sentence, so, w/e.
