NEW Stop Motion Advanced Workshop: bit.ly/2rjAiMP
There are a million ways to add lens flare after the fact in Photoshop. But in today’s lesson, we’re going to talk about adding lens flare in camera, out on location. Using flare purposefully is a creative call, and can look very interesting. So let’s take a look at how to go about accomplishing that.
Keep those cameras rollin' and keep on clickin'.

2:28, 4:20 - Getting too much Sun, use a _natural_ Reflector; bounce from a Building or have the Sun hit the curved windows of a vehicle, perfect positioning on the pillar would give two upwards lighting Suns. Don't forget high quality NDs as they let you keep the Aperture open creating a shallow DOF, or combined with a narrow Aperture a long Shutter effect. If it's video then wind in the trees provides a wonderful fluttering. And the Subject can rock slowly one way while you go the other, keeping the Subject in position on the Frame and sliding the background to reveal the Sun fluttering in the trees (don't forget the Glass Bounce if you need it). Like any effect don't overdo it. I have a Sun Flare video but it wasn't particularly popular nor has anyone said why. Song or too much dreamy Sun chases. Thanks for your efforts, Rob

Was wondering, does pulling the camera focus from FG to BG changes the look of the lens flare too? :) I'm a 3D guy, so this is super interesting for me.
@TheSlantedLens
@TheSlantedLens Жыл бұрын
I haven't tested that, but from my experience I think it can change it some because the focus distance changes. But probably not very perceptible.

Hello, can you explain how you exposed for the front of the image with the tree lens flare and with the building lens flare, was it with a strobe or reflector ? Balancing backlight is a challenge of me. Thanks.

I think sunlight is bad for the camera's light sensor, at least I read that in my Canon manual(s), but great video!!!. (nothing like old town😝)

Am watching Stranger Things and I decided to research if you can tell the focal length/lens type by looking at lens flare. I think spherical vs anamorphic is obvious enough, and apparently this video explained to me how the star is formed (closed down more). Photoshop has different flares based on telephoto vs standard focal lengths so I guess I could check that out. I just thought it'd be cool to watch a shot and see a flare and think, "35mm at f/8".
