Hi folks, hope you enjoy this one and it inspires a few more people to join the wonderful garden youtube community. There's soooo much I couldn't fit in to this video and I think it's possible I tried to cover too much in not enough detail so I will be happy to answer questions you have! I'm sure these comments will be full of tips from other gardening creators too, hopefully some good suggestions of good free software etc. I should have said I always started out with the relatively expensive things because I really wanted things to last, and also have relatively high production standards for myself. Worth mentioning I made my first 15 or so videos just on my phone before I knew I really wanted to carry on with the channel and commit to it, which is when I invested in the M50, which has lasted for around 225 videos now!

This is such a useful guide for anyone wanting to start out. It'll save people from thinking they need to do an enormous shopping trip before starting. And remind them that the stuff that they need to get good at (being entertaining, being comfortable on camera, developing a style) are the real investment.

One of the draws to your channel, JB, is that you never pretended to be an expert. You put yourself out there as a beginner and everyone wanted to support you because you were genuine and new. I know I loved it (also a beginner) and when I look for new channels to watch, I always look for the ones that feel genuine. I've enjoyed learning alongside you. Thanks for the tips and the interesting look into how you make your videos (and your journey to 10k - congrats btw). A very useful video for those of us on the fence about starting a vlog.

Great video JB! And thanks for the shout-out. We were having our coffee and watching you on the TV (nice big face btw) and I nearly spat my Alta Rica over my trousers when you mentioned "Soil & Toil Allotment". We were nodding at all your excellent tips. I'd always encourage people to use somewhere like KZbin to store their allotment videos, even if they set them to private, because it's a great way to record your progress. Once you get more confident, subsequent videos could be made public. We often spot things in the video that we didn't notice when working on the plot because we were too fixated on that little area we were working on (we do the videos for us, first and foremost). And it's fantastic to compare year-on-year to see what's changed, how crops have performed differently, what impact the weather had, etc. All these things are easy to forget after years of having a plot, so videos can be excellent points of historic reference. If the videos inspire others then that's the icing on the cake, hence making them public. And the key thing is to find the videography style that you enjoy, or has the least amount of annoyances (I hate video editing! Probably no surprise there 😁). We've seen a number of allotment channels come and go because they made their video style so complex that it became a burden. Sometimes the KISS approach is best, at least at the start, then build up from there. Festive wishes, and all the best for 2024, David

I totally agree with you regarding people who start gardening channels with little experience but claim to know so much. Or who copy ideas that they have seen someone else film and not give credit. It is very obvious to those of us that have been growing for a while and it's very off putting. Be honest about your level, people love to watch a beginner learning and it is endearing, advice will come flooding in too. If you have the experience and knowledge, no matter how gauche you are, we will see it. If you look at Steve's first videos, you can see him struggling with the whole channel starting and filming but his knowledge shone through right from the beginning and his channel just took off as a result and he blossomed. Thank you also for mentioning comments etiquette, I also find people self promoting on another's creative efforts very rude. If your channel is worthy of watching, word soon gets around.

Some great advice JB! I just to work on my confidence to do the irl videos. I often make videos to share with our family doing a garden tour or school performances but i guess i need to work more on editing the garden ones. I don't know that many people irl that is into gardening or put up with me talking about gardening and preserving stuff. That is why i like this YT community as we all have similar interests. I also think it would be helpful if you have a problem or issue in the garden a video would make it easier to show what it is and may even help other people, if they have the same problem.

Brilliant video JB - although made me cringe (and smile!) thinking of all the mistakes I still make! 🙈 Super informative and I'll be watching this again to really make note of the little things I can do to improve. I know I still have to remind myself to look at the camera and not my face - so hard! It was a year ago today that I first picked up the phone to film on day 1 on my plot and I edited that first video on a phone app I found in the Play Store. I've been using LightWorks to edit (free version) which is a bit buggy but - well, free - and now that I've got my head around it I am loathe to have to learn something new. It is a lot of work and a lot to learn, but it is so nice to document the evolution of my growing spaces and have people out there wanting to share in the experience. The comments section makes all the frustrations of editing/tech worthwhile! I finally bough a gimbal on Black Friday and am trying to get to grips with that as well as a new phone, so my current videos are littered with tech errors 😬 - but I find people are very forgiving about these sorts of things so long as you're genuine and enthusiastic in your delivery. Anyway, this was a super generous video to make JB - thank you 😊 P.S. I MUST BUY A MIC! 🙈🤣

@@JBNat ah, we're all life long learners and I'm glad of the tips. When you start out all of this stuff is such a mystery. I have an upcoming '1 year on youtube' episode slated for Jan and will definitely be referencing this video. Not an iphone - I was using a Samsung S20 and just recently switched to a Pixel 8 (in part because of the promise of the audio eraser feature but turns out it is pure gimmick and useless for vlogging) - the audio on the Pixel 8 is being a pain, plus there is a bug in the gimbal app that means when the Pixel is in selfie mode it only picks up mono audio - but I've been promised there is a fix in tomorrow's app update...). Ah, the joys of tech! I appreciate your feedback JB but you're right about the amount of time it takes to really feel comfortable on camera and just be yourself. Getting there. Got my first 'live' with Danny tonight - should be fun...!
@JBNat10 ай бұрын
Oh lovely!! Enjoy the live. I was meant to be live with him and Audrey yesterday but my Internet had other ideas 🙃 I must say I HATE software that relies upon apps, which is one of the reasons I went with mirror less camera and a full gimbal. It won't track my motion but I know it will always just work and not break if there's a software update!

Hey J.B., Now that is a right proper video with tips and tricks to filming and editing. Practice and repetition are the best tools to develop good habits and when you do things the same or mostly similar the editing can be so much easier. I did online auctions for several years and I shot still phots for the catalog as well as wrote the narrative descriptions. I did have some video of things that needed close ups and extra explanation. I took tons of photos and then just kept the ones I wanted. It was a nightmare to go back and try to get more photos later. I always showed all the flaws to make sure folks saw what they bid on. So everything we do may contains a lot of the same actions but they can be tiring so getting the best shots in the first time there was less to edit. You did a great job showing some of the things that can be done to make big impacts later. I hope folks appreciate this video for its intention. Cya later bye for now

@JBNat10 ай бұрын
I would actually say (and probably should have made this clearer in the video) that you really don't need a gimbal for a phone in my opinion. Provided the phone has good stabilization built in and isn't terribly shaky. I dried out the DJI Osmo phone gimbal for a couple of videos and one point and it was cool but I think it makes a very small difference compared to a gimbal for a camera!

What a great video! Fantastic advice. I am hard of hearing and videos with background noise or busy street noise are near impossible for me to watch, so using a proper microphone would be my best tip as well. I came across a video the other day that I could not finish because the creator swirled the camera around and around and never stopped to properly focus on the plant he was trying to show. Motion sickness was just the beginning! 😆 Making a good video takes both talent, patience and experience.

Now i want to have 2 sepoerate channels, work and the plot, so i am actually taking onboard quite a few of the things you have pointed put. I have only ever used my samsung phone, but i did buy wireless mics 2 weeks ago but i cant egt them to sound right. guess i will keep trying. Thanks for this brilliant tutorial JB. My biggest concern is other allotment holders - how do cope with feeling self-conscious when recording? And have you ever had any grumpy neighbours complain about you doing it?
@JBNat10 ай бұрын
Hahaha yes to both questions. Extremely self conscious because you'll note I don't have fences or anything. I'm much more used to it now but still generally uncomfortable if people are around. Having two plots and a tunnel is a boon because it's so much easier to avoid people. I also have a neighbour who hates me filming and marches over and tells me to make sure I don't film her 😳 thankfully she's not there too often and I just played nice and explained I would make sure she wasn't on film, just to be polite. 99% of plot holders won't mind and will just be interested to hear what you're up to! Most of them won't even know about allotment-KZbin existing!

@@JBNat thanks so much - I guess I'll have to put on my big boy pants and deal with any issues. And work out some shooting angles that mean I can record without including other plots! Editing can be as complex or as simple as you want it to be. It's just always going to take a few hours to get used to those basics. All you really need to do is cut out the bits where you're not talking after you've hit record, and then export it so it's a reasonable file size! (raw video is huge and would take hours to upload to KZbin!) Once you've learned the basic controls editing a video just to it's most basic should take about the same time as the length of your video.

Great video JB! So many great tips - particularly the KZbin etiquette section! I have a very barebones set up (totally agree that the wireless mic being the biggest impact upgrade I made - despite sometimes creating more problems like not recording / only recording mono!), but wondered if you had any recommendations on the "action cam" you mentioned after your camera gives up the ghost? Any particular makes / models? I'm getting a bit fed up on the transfer times on the footage using the iPhone to the cloud and wondered if the Data Card transfer approach was better (although suspect I'd miss the portability of cloud storage for creating shorts etc)? Cheers, Andy.

Oooooh okay that's a quite good question. But yes you're right. Receiver unit is what I showed on top of the camera, the broadcasting unit was in my pocket with a lavmic plugged into it and clipped onto my shirt. There's a red cable that goes from the receiver into my camera. The cable I use for that is built for cameras and comes in the box with the microphone units. You'll have to try and do a research on exactly what phone you have and how it connects though. If you have a phone with an aux port you need to be careful you get the right adapter for it. I think it's TRS to TRRS but honestly I can't be sure because I've not used the wireless on the phone I'm afraid!

@@JBNat Thanks so much for your answer. I understand better now and will check properly before buying anything. This video was very good and informative, maybe it can help me become a little better behind the camera. Have a nice day. / Annica

Hi JB, thank you so much for such a comprehensive and clear explanation ❤. I'm feeling a little bit braver and will start experimenting. My goal is sharing the fork to food philosophy and spending time with my daughter who is food mad! Question: names? I have an idea for a channel and instagram name but don't want to be cringing in 6 months time. Did you have any qualms about names? Best to be you I guess. Thank you again, great response ❤❤ Vickie

Names are a tricky one but I don't think they're particularly make or break! Look at Tony C. Smith!! You can also change your youtube name if you want later on down the line. I still to this day don't really know why I chose Naturally JB, some days I don't like it but most of the time I just don't think about it 😅 I originally had intended to do much more about wildlife, biodiversity and the natural world but it just didn't really shake out that way (mainly because filming insects and life is MUCH harder than the photography I've enjoyed over the years).

@@JBNat I can imagine wildlife filming is very tricky. My plot is surrounded by blacurrant fields so I was thinking of "Through the currants'🤔😁

Usually, when someone cuts out dead space or a mistake, the Frame before and after the cut doesn't match exactly. I can watch most videos and tell every such cut. I try to have an overlap of just enough frames to blur the join.
@JBNat10 ай бұрын
J cuts are very useful, there's a few subtle ones in this too. Jump cuts themselves are a stylistic choice. I personally focus on audio continuity (as shown in the little edit clip!) because I find that is where cuts can actually be jarring, and generally speaking, jump cuts are found in 90% of KZbin videos and accepted by audiences 😊
@ecocentrichomestead678310 ай бұрын
@@JBNat yes. I could still tell where you cut and joined in the example you used. There's another cut and join just a couple seconds before it.
@JBNat10 ай бұрын
Yes I'm not saying they're invisible 😅 I'm saying 99% of people don't mind them even when they notice them. J cuts are different from jump cuts. I think you're talking about j cuts to overlap frames. Or maybe you're just talking about a short crossfade?
@ecocentrichomestead678310 ай бұрын
@@JBNat yes, a very short cross fade makes them less visible and helps blend the sound better as well.

A question JB do you have to pay tax on the urnings from KZbin if you do does it come out automatically or is it like a self employed thing and you have to send in the tax returns
@JBNat10 ай бұрын
Yes! You have to register as a sole trader (or LLC if you're really fancy) and declare the income from everything in self assessment.

Jb, I have started a channel and really don't mind being behind the camera, making mistakes, laughing etc but it's the editing that I cannot seem to wrap my head around. I find it extremely frustrating. So I stopped. 😢 Any helpful tips on.learning to edit?
@JBNat10 ай бұрын
What software do you use? And are you editing on a phone or a computer?
@barerfootgardener1146410 ай бұрын
@JBNat I used the editing program in youtube. I also tried s I meshing else, but I'll be darned if I can't remember what it is. I don't want pay for something this early on.
@JBNat10 ай бұрын
Ahh yes KZbin's editor isn't actually built for proper editing. You can just cut off a little bit at the start or the end. Unless maybe you're talking about the shorts editor, I think that's a bit more fleshed out. There's some good suggestions for free software in the comments here 😊
