You presented this as if silver on glass is the only way to make a mirror. And half of it was on mining silver. Downvoted: Alternative Methods Aluminizing: This process involves depositing aluminum onto a glass surface, which is often preferred for its durability. Aluminized mirrors tend to last longer than silvered mirrors, making this method popular in various applications, including telescopes. Other Metals: Besides silver and aluminum, other metals such as gold and copper can also be used to create reflective coatings. These materials can be applied in various ways, depending on the desired properties of the mirror. Plastic Mirrors: Reflective coatings can also be applied to plastic surfaces, allowing for the creation of mirrors that are lighter and less fragile than glass. Mylar and Other Films: Mylar sheets or similar reflective films can be adhered to surfaces to create mirrors. This method is often used in artistic applications or for temporary installations.

I have never heard using silver on mirrors (for general use other than specialized optical uses) since coating with aluminum was invented. An aluminum mirror, while having slightly less reflectivity than new silver mirror, is superior as aluminum does not tarnish. It can even be coated, naked, on the front of glass & is stable (but fragile mechanically).

Interesting. Just at 0:56: In 400 years they mined 30000 tonnes, but they mine 1000 tonnes a year, which would result in 30000 tonnes in 30 years not 400. What am I missing?

Just like any modern products, they’re mass produced so it’s down to raw (materials etc) costs instead most of the time. People don’t really appreciate how far we have came. Also there are cheaper alternatives? Silver seems to be a real high quality one to be used.

Aluminum is more common because is is far less expensive, both material-wise and process. Aluminum is nearly as reflective at ~90%. So, most mirrors bought and broken are Aluminum plated and not silver. You wouldn't plate a 2mm piece of glass with silver and you wouldn't plate a 10mm piece of glass in aluminum.
