In this video I will show you how to properly open and close the front door of a Boeing 737. This actually forms part of a formal typerating and is very important, for health and safety, to be done correctly.
I hope you will enjoy this, slightly more technical, video.
As always, feel free to join me and the other enthusiasts in the "Mentour Aviation" app chat after the video to discuss and ask your questions.

Yeah, I didn't know that either. All the main airports here in Aus (i.e. the various state capitals) and the more common 'tourist' destinations (Cairns, for example) all use jetways. I would think that's by far the most common scenario around the world. One of our domestic carriers often uses the rear door as well, but that's on larger planes and they're clearly using a much larger set of stairs. Which brings up a question: how commonly are those stairs used?
@BluStoned
@BluStoned 6 жыл бұрын
Yep, I'm from Aus too, I agree with what your saying. The only time I had to use the air stairs was at a regional airport without a jetway, but they didn't use the built in ones, they rolled a ramp up to the door... like an actual ramp.

Here's another thing you should always do: Wear a hi-viz vest on the apron. In some airports, you can get fined for not doing so. This is based on the fact, very surprising to some crew, that crew is not invincible nor are they immune to causing accidents if they are not seen in time. Not much traffic seen in this video, but you'll find the internal roads very busy in many airports.

Having their logo visible could be interpreted as being their representative in the video. That's not the case (and airlines are large companies sensitive to PR) so it should be avoided as much as possible.

The built in air stairs are a sign of the 737s original design brief: Operate from smaller airports with the minimum of ground equipment needed. This is also why the 737 is so low to the ground. It enabled ramp rats to service it without the need for large, expensive, ground equipment. You can load the bag from the back of a low loader! No need for a conveyor belt truck. This allowed for faster turn arounds. Folk criticise the 737 for it be "too low" to the ground. But they either do not know the origins of the design or choose to ignore it.

Then get it out of my major international airport, where I have abundant steps, belt and ULD loaders around me. Walking from one side of the aircraft is such a hassle. Either walk around, or break my back crouching under the fuselage. That was a joke

Hi Mentour. Great vids. I enjoy them a lot. I have a question. How is the aircraft weighed? And how do you know as a pilot the way the weight is distributed around the airplane? I mean the passengers. I imagine that affects the handling of the airplane. Do you wait to see how it affects the flying once you´re in the air? I wouldn't imagine so. Thanks again for the vids.

...and always be sure to pet the aircraft! ♡ The 737 (all series) is my most favorite Boeing! Most handsome "face" of All! Is it possible that the front part (nose/cockpit windows/shape) looks very similar to the good old 707? "Intercontinental Jet" but no wide body... I'm "Airliner-Freak" since a toddler, (got my first a little toy-plane, a DC-8, at the airport when I was 2yrs, while other girls got a doll, haha!) am spotter/photographer since more than 2 decades and I love your videos! Very educational and interesting, also for an old planelover like me! My forever No.1 Fav will always be the L-1011 - although it is not used by airlines anymore. Sadly =( But I've my memories... Keep on your awesome work of sharing your precious knowledge to everyone! ☆

Hello Pilot Mentour ! I have a question. You have mentioned in the video if we have a back problems we must avoid opening or closing the aircraft doors. But how can we overcome this process if we have to do during pilot training or to valid any process something like that ? Can we mention this during training without any consequences after ? Isn't a minus point if you are not able to do this or it doesn't matter ? Thanks in advance

Never knew 737 has built-in airstairs! Some questions though: What if the slides are armed? Can you disarm them from outside or try another door? Can't imagine every door has its own airstairs... If the slides were armed but the crew forgot to attach the strap, are you screwed? When you opened the door you turned the handle 180 degrees. But closing it required only a slight pull twist and back to original position, is that right? Can you lower the airstairs from inside the plane? Imagine disembarking in a remote airport...

Buying airliners is much like buying a car in that you get to select amongst a selection of options to be installed. For example you'll find a lot of aircraft either having or not having equipment such as Airstairs, SATCOM antennas (the hat on the fuselage that gives you wifi), ETOPS systems, steel or carbon brake disks (steel more common in earlier years), various avionics sub-systems, and more.
@timothyjohns3561

I bet they absolutely do. The volume of aircraft they purchase and their ULCC business model means they would be ordering from Boeing the planes to exactly suit what RyanAir needs and more importantly what they do not need. Seats, overhead bins, seatback, IFE (or lack of), galley, toilets... all would be custom ordered to exactly suit RA specs.

Can u fly a 4 engine aircraft can u fly using using just to of the four engine to save fuel or if two engines fail?

Yes. Many aircraft can be flown with a single engine. It is only done in emergency situations, though so you can't do on a regular basis it to save fuel.

Ege Feyzioğlu and i also imagine that flying a four engine aircraft on a total thrust setting that is lower than the max output of two engines is less efficient. imagine if you run all four engines on half thrust. it seems like if you can get the necessary thrust from only 2 engines, which you could from this scenario, then the engines are partially acting as dead weight. if you flew with two engines shut off, they would only be causing drag, whereas the other engines would at least be providing thrust as well

Hi (Hej) Mentour, i have a question. Can you use the reverse thrust to make a plan move backwards?

I asume that the jetblast don't blow anything away when you leave the gate.

Hi Mentour, if you happen to see another aircraft coming straight towards you in the air, is there a rule for which way to turn to avoid a collision - like with boats on the water? Also, do aircrafts have technical names for the front, back, left or right of the aircraft, like boats do?

The plane as you are sitting in it has starboard for right and portside for the left. Red navigator light on the left and green for the right on the wingtips. There's a video on this recently streamed.

Unrelated, but where can I find the music used for the intro/outro? Also I would very much like to see a video about all the different kinds of runway/taxiway markings, lights and signs.
