How Arsenal FIXED Their Biggest Issue

Right now Rice's best position is no 8, but in the future I believe that he should aim for the no 6 position where Partey plays. Partey is my current preference in that position but no one is sure how fit he can stay, when he may leave or his defensive consistency - Rice has defensive consistency, good fitness and a long-term future at the club, and would only need to learn play dictation and Partey's skill on the ball and progressing it (i.e., progressive passes need to be smoother with Rice. Similarly, Calafiori is the upgrade on Zinchenko - he has the defensive resilience that only a centre-back would have no disrespect to Zinchenko as he is not tall like a centre-back and brilliant at everything else he does). Calafiori will need to learn the inverting skill and DM play dictation that Zinchenko does so well, and once he can do that and combine his ball carrying, crossing and overlapping he will become unstoppable. Finally I agree with Mikel Merino becoming the new no 8 - with Rice developing and becoming the complete no 6, Merino would be the perfect long-awaited replacement for Granit Xhaka. Xhaka's ball-progression and attacking game was perfect for his role, and Rice's only problem is that he is right-footed playing down the left channel and preventing him from overlapping Martinelli. Furthermore, Xhaka's liability was his defensive work - he was good like Rice to win the ball back high, but would struggle in playing a double pivot. I believe that Merino has proven to have the best of both and considering Arsenal's no 8 still plays on the left side, Merino is the final piece EXTRA POINTS - now we have enough left-footed centre-back defenders, I would limit Timber's and Tomiyasu's involvement to only RCB and RB - this will allow players like Kiwior and Calafiori to obtain more game-time and development. ONLY play right-footers in LB when you see a definitive advantage in doing so

Offence last season relied almost exclusively on the right side. This means the opponent could focus their defence on the right. If they successfully locked down our right wing, our offence was as good as dead. I really hope we can activate the left wing this season.

Havertz can play the left sided 8 the main issue was that in possession from deep he is being told to go ahead of jesus and that drops oodegard too deep. If arsenal gets a ball playing striker who has the height to win long balls the balance in the team can be regained.

Actually Rice isn't the best at 6 in Mikel'splan.. Partey is better even Jorginho. The crucial games we lost like Villa were when Rice was moved from 8 to 6

He doesn’t need to be a progressive passer at 6 because when rice plays 6 our ball progression comes through Odegaard and Zinchenko. We have multiple ways to play and tactics to use. Arteta will do whatever is needed per game.

I laugh whenever this guy talks down partey, everyone rates him as a 6 apart from this guy. Lord knows what he watches when Arsenal are playing because partey is vital for us keeping the ball and playing FOOTBALL! Guarantee Partey starts first game of the season and has a great run of 5-10 games

While the left side is an issue to fix, the biggest issue is building play against the mid block . We were stumped against Porto and then against Bayern.

At the Bayern game, Bayern overloaded the right side and were okay leaving Gabriel free because they understood that our left side build-up isn't as big a threat as our right. But with Calafiori we will be better in such situations
