How Arsenal's 10 Men Nearly Pulled Off The Impossible Against Man City

Manchester City vs Arsenal ended in spectacular fashion with a late John Stones equaliser breaking the Gunners' resolve. But, after Leandro Trossard's red card in the first half left his side a man short, Mikel Arteta's dropped a modern masterclass on how to frustrate a numerically superior opponent and deny them the space to create any meaningful chances. They may have ultimately dropped 2 points, but they were less than a minute away from recording a win for the ages. Adam Clery examines their defending (and all the controversial decisions) to explain how they almost did it.

No hate from me, I agree with pretty much everything. But I will point out that even in the pic you showed of Trossard being sent off, he's already swung his leg back as the ref, who failed to send of Kovacic last season, is blowing his whistle. He's made his decision to clear the ball before the whistle is blown, like any good player should.

No one will talk about him but Martineli was incredible on the night. In the low block he held back walker and other defenders to prevent the counter. He applied pressure throughout the game and never stopped running. Not to mention the positional awareness to switch from a winger to a fullback in seconds. Really think we struggled a lot more after he came off, would’ve loved another 10 minutes of him on the pitch

"Does [Doku] deliberately stop the taking of a free kick? Yes he does, but the free kick wasn't going to be taken from there. The ball had to move back there." You could argue the same thing applied to Declan Rice's second yellow. If you look at the actions after foul on Partey that led to Arsenal's equalizer, Bernardo Silva dribbled the ball 10 yards up the pitch after the whistle. No yellow card given, by the way. Arsenal kicked the ball when Oliver blew his whistle. Kyle Walker was in position, but not ready when the free kick was taken. It was not Arsenal's responsibility to wait until he was.

I appreciate your opinion on Oliver's officiating at the end. As an Arsenal fan, it just seems like there is an eagerness to strictly apply the delaying the restart in ways that I have yet to see other teams punished for. On the quick FK that led to the goal, only thing I'd point out there is that the ball is ahead of the spot where the Arsenal player is fouled only because it's carried away by a City player. But I do see the point that Walker is called over & then the whistle is blown a bit prematurely. But point being I do think both sets of supporters could heap more blame on their players' role in all of this. Great video as usual!
@karlpk3907

Great analysis, per usual. Arteta showed weak teams how to defend against City. Why not, if you are vastly technically weaker, do a 6 man low block even with a full 11 man squad? I can imagine a manager starting off the week's training by drilling in this low block and working on multiple situations where you win the ball and the counter is on. Again, why not? In the final third, City will play the way they always play -- work the ball around the edges of the 18, every man in a properly spaced position in the sections of the pitch (e.g. no more than 2 players per half space), wingers driving with the ball when 1 v 1 and combine close to goal and finish at or around the 6. The 6 man block grinds this dynamic system to a halt. Why not?

Agree about Walker, but he's not alone in paying too much attention to the officials in this and many other games. Many throw a hand up in the air to signal an off-side instead of focusing on the play that is still on-going. The players focus must be on the play AT ALL TIMES. If your not in position, you're not doing your job. I don't care if the ref called him over. He should have stood his ground and listened from afar to what the ref had to say. Better yet, he should have argued about the positioning of the ball. It seems like he wasn't paying attention to what was going on at times. But it wasn't his fault entirely. In my opinion, it's City's incessant desire for ball possession and game control. It's well practiced. The problem is when you rely on that one tactic and don't succeed with it, you don't really have a viable plan "B". Since all they ever practice is how to really work with plan "A", all you have left at the end is desperation. City got lucky.

Oliver failed twice last season to send off Kovacic for obvious red card tackles, he's also a prima donna of a ref' who likes to be the star of the show. Don't give him a reason to get a card out. But in effect, Trossard did that 3x. So that's kinda on him. Naive, from one of the most experienced players in the team.

About the first Arsenal goal: Walker had enough time to get back in his position. Even though he was talking with his team mates during running back he was in position, so without talking to anyone he would have been there even faster. That the free kick was taking in the wrong position might be true but this is nothing out of the ordinary, especially in that midfield area. Happens every game, every time. Arsenal was just smart enough to use that advantage. About the second yellow for Trossard: between the blow of the whistle and his kick of the ball were 0,5 to 0,7 seconds. Go and rewatch it, listen closely and stop the time yourself. His decision to clear the ball was made before he heard the whistle. There was no chance to change his mind in a situation like this. It was a scandalous decision and we should the refs not get away with those decisions. They destroyed a football game with this kind of nonsense.

Genuinely felt that Man City didn't deserve anything from this game. I don't know if I've ever been more proud of Arsenal's composure and discipline than I was throughout that gruelling second half-the equaliser was a bit of luck that City absolutely did not deserve. They didn't create anything at all for over 50 minutes, and Arsenal defended-to a man-like giants. Between Rice's red card against Brighton and Trossard's in this game, my concern is that Arsenal are going to be nailed for delayed restarts in a way that no other club will be-it's last season all over again. If you'd asked me on Sunday morning, I would've taken this result, but after watching how heroically Arsenal dug in and held out, settling for a draw is gutting. At least there's some solace in the thought that Rodri-who mocked us for being pleased last season after the 0-0 draw and said we lacked City's mentality-could be out for the rest of the season.

The kick was within a second of the whistle. Biomechanically it’s unlikely he’d have had the capability to alter his action. As for desert, well, desert’s got nothing to do with it I suppose but Arsenal a man down did restrict City to less than an xG until the last minute of the the longest half of football with the most ball in play time in the league this season. They’ll think they deserved it.

great analysis. there are few things about the ref, he was bad. Everyone is ignoring what Silva did just before the goal. He took the ball after the foul, moved it at least 20m, and also blocked Trossard from getting it. Ref ignored it completely. (that is probably the reason fk was taken further up the pitch). And not to forget that the same ref didn't give Kovacic 2 red cards (for bad tackles) in the last game because he didn't want to negatively affect the game. But he needed just 2 seconds to make a decision to give a second yellow for kicking the ball less than a second after the whistle in an 8th minute of 6 minutes stoppage time. was his thinking he would positively affect the game with this?

The fact that Doku’s delay of game isn’t a yellow because the free kick spot was a few yards back, sounds oddly familiar to the situation against Brighton, where the player kicks the ball 3 yards forward into Declan, then proceeds to boot him in the ankle before the brandishes a second yellow for Declan. Again, it just seems that Arsenal players are refereed harder but maybe we’re all just making things up

Although yes I agree, that both decisions with Walker, and Troussard were pretty similarly poor, I would say that the effect of giving away a goal in comparison to sending a team to 10 men, is massively different. As a gunner, having watched what happened a few times, it was definitely dumb from Troussard, to commit an obvious foul and then boot away the boot. But also, you play until the whistle, and that whistle to kick was a very short period of time.

Guardiola's tactics were mystifying in the second half. It was obvious with the extremely low block that Arsenal deployed that long range shooting was going to be the main avenue to get a goal. Therefore, why did he not deploy at least one really good shooter of the ball at the top of the D? I would have put Akanji and Diaz inside the box as tall players to challenge for headers and pulled back Gundogan and maybe Savinho to partner Kovacic outside the box. Keep Walker back for his recovery speed just in case Arsenal break.

Thank you for the vid! I just wanna say this re the refereeing. In general, a referee, in any sphere of life, is a facilitator of things, someone who makes sure things are going the way they are supposed to go and managing things so that the parties involved can maximise the value of whatever it is they came to do, so that things don't go BONKERS and so on. That said, you, as a referee, are not in the spotlight, quite the contrary, your goal is to stay as far away from the spotlight as possible. You have a rulebook, you make sure every participant is on the same page as to what is going to be applied and how it's going to be applied. And applying the approach consistently and coherently, so that the participants don't have to constantly project their potential action onto what a referee might think about it. By the way, I'm saying all this as a professional Mafia conductor. With that in mind, back to the issue at hand. The spirit of an ejection from a game,, whether it's a straight red or a second yellow, is removing a player who's either genuinely endangered another player, or someone who is consistently breaking the rules of the game, and who hasn't reacted to the warnings from the referee. In a sense, it's an extreme measure that should only be applied in extreme circumstances, there're exceptions when players are knowingly going for the ejection, but that's whole other story and bears no relevance here. I'll omit mentioning the fact that there's been slightly more than a second between the whistle and Trossard kicking the ball. I'll also omit mentioning the fact that Oliver didn't really think about this decision, it was way more of an impulse, an instinct. With all that said, was that really an offence worth ejecting a player?

I don’t hate you for the opinion but trossard’s second yellow was for kicking the ball away. Time between the whistle going and trossard kicking the ball? 1second. My other half can be calling my name for a good 2 minutes sometimes while I contemplate my toenails. Now sometimes players definitely know what they’re doing in that sort of time period but sometimes it seems like they’re just in the moment actually playing the ball, and I’m biased but trossard’s really felt like the latter.

Standard reaction times are between .5 to .8 seconds, so we’re expecting something at the edge of human capabilities on the part of Trossard. I think the general heuristic for refs should be to not send people off for an action within 1 second of the whistle.

Was reminded of 2012 Chelsea and Roberto Di matteo when terry got sent off at 30th minute of the game, chelsea then conceded two goals from Barcelona Yet they were able to score two Of course Chelsea didn't bottle it😂

Without the red card Arsenal would have won 2-1. They'd have trussard to take the ball up the field.

Partey is too inconsistent and a liability. So many goals conceded can be traced back to his errors. We could afford it with Xhaka 2 seasons ago but even then we weren’t performing well enough to win the title. Really excited to see merino’s impact.

Arsenal didn't successfully move the position of the free kick from which we scored. David Silva actually picked up the ball and dropped it there. The referee didn't tell arsenal to move the ball back and arsenal didn't offer to. Big difference and the fault lies with the referee for the free kick being taken from the wrong position. Well what do you know, incompetence by the match official effects the game in a negative manner for a team. It proves us right when we moan when it affects us and the contrary reasoning from the referee, var and pgmol for the Trossard red card is them trying to prove it was a correct decision by obsfucating. Rival fans seem to enjoy jumping on the pgmol and City reasoning to have a pop at arsenal. But people need to realise that they're falling for the oldest trick in the book and it will come back to bite their team on the arse at some point during the season. Pretty sure that wolves got done over by the refs and var the most last season. It doesn't just effect us arsenal fans, it effects all of us and the pgmol are using our tribalism against us

They should just get rid of the time wasting rules. goalkeeper taking too much time just add that much time on the stoppage time, player kicks the ball away he needs to get it back and that much time is added on to the stoppage time

Haaland, frighteningly enough, is beginning to understand how to play the 9. He is learning how to combine and run off the ball better than ever. That said, this first goal was inexcusable on the part of the Arsenal defense -- the minute you see Haaland's eyes go to the ball you should put him offside ESPECIALLY when you are yards away from him and there's nothing between the back line and the keeper. If he has an open channel to run into, he will find space to receive, and you will not be able to knock him off the ball and you likely will not be able to keep up with him, so you either have to make a great tackle from behind or hope your keeper can make a great save. You MUST keep him offside in that position or force him to step back onside, which would give you a head start on the through ball.

It was bad defending, but as Merson noted post match it was incredible forward play by Haaland to stagger his run.

@@LittleTripoli Indeed it was a great run and a very cheeky finish at a covered near post with a rocket of a grass cutter the was in fact just a toe poke! He is learning to play the 9 correctly, which should be terrifying to teams. There were two occasions before the Trossard red that he received the ball, back to goal, once on the chest, once at feet, with incredible control and laid the ball off perfectly to an open teammate facing goal. It would be great at some point for our 442 guru to do a vid just on Haaland's improvement in striker play. Will Haaland be the first player EVER to score 1 goal per game (averaged) through ALL competitions in one season? (I don't think anyone has ever achieved that feat) If any player can do it, he can.
Did Arsenal rattle Man City?
