This is one of the things I hoped AI would help with. I feel we really need to better understand the other organisms that share this planet, and a tall ask, adapt to make choices that benefit them as well as us.

Correct me if I'm wrong: If you create labeled data for training the machine, it will only be able to detect what was labeled. Therefore, it is limited by what we already know and can't really tell us NEW information about their interactions.
@yahiiia9269
@yahiiia9269 Жыл бұрын
You are exactly right. You would need an AI that combines all data about everything we know about the world and our universe so far to allow the AI to make complete, precise translations. It would also have to "smell" the bats, see the body temps and more for fully precise data. This is a very simplistic ai model and is still limited by humans.
@clockpenalty
@clockpenalty Жыл бұрын
Not really. The magic happens when the AI figures out patterns that link labelled data in ways that those doing the labelling couldn’t have predicted. The AI can then “generate” novel translations- it’s the core of the reason why deep learning is getting so much hype today: the fact that after being trained on human labelled data, it derives insights the humans couldn’t see.
@SameenIslam
@SameenIslam Жыл бұрын
To extend this work, they need an unsupervised learning approach that will be able to separate all the different modes of interaction. Once that’s done, they can perform clustering and associate the known patterns with their observed behaviour. This will probably leave a few clusters that are unknown to us humans. But they could use generative AI to play this back on a speaker and observe how the bats responds. From this, we should be able to correlate the stimulus-response and label the remaining classes by hand. This is how I would approach this work today, given the current state of the art for AI.

This is really fascinating! I wish this team and its collaborators full success with their research goal. Are there other teams doing similar work with whales, elephants, birds etc.? Imagine! Future zoo or natural park visitors may one day be able to wear headphones with audiosensors and walk along and understand what chosen species are saying to each other. This may have a major impact on how much humans respect not only animal species, at least mammals, but also their habitats that allow them to survive. In this sense, such research has become urgent.

I agree that this type of research is not only great but almost necessary to our cohabitation with other species as we move forward. Research always shows that "[any animal species] is more intelligent that we initially thought", no surprise, not much more than about a century ago people were still describing other humans as beasts, and now huge industries depends on animal exploitation. The more we understand animal intelligence, for sure zoos could try to profit from it, but I'm hoping animal captivity, other than rescue, will be less commonly accepted

The catch appears to be that we need a deep understanding of the communication patterns in order to annotate training data. It doesn’t appear to listen to novel sounds and readily decipher them - though it is physically possible with perhaps a foundational model approach as there are human experts who have done this already, proving it a tenable informational problem.

Yes... Bats all like to do gibberish speaking to themselves. But if they need our help they certainly would want to talk to us. We need to talk to them also. To ask can they move to another location because they smell. They have no idea how they annoy us with their smell and their noise because we cannot tell them. All they know is when people bang pots and pans and make huge noise in their backyards to scare them away. But they do not know what they have done wrong! So yes, we need to talk to them. In the beginning of creation Adam named animals and they were his friends. He talked to them. After he sinned, disobeyed God, the animals became wild and enemy. Same with the plants. Thorns and thistles and weeds arrived. Prior to that only perfect flowers and trees. If man had not sinned then we would have not had this animal communication breakdown. So scientists are trying to restore the breach back to normal. One day God will fix this problem and return this earth to perfection.

@@pedronchoxgrc19 Hello 🙂 I didn't mean that AI can't improve our lives, only that in this case it is unnecessary because we already have the innate ability to communicate with animals through our 3rd eye which is our Pineal gland located in the center of our forehead just above our eyebrows. We are born with the "inner technology" so there is no need to construct an external technology, which is what we've done with many of our technologies. Phones for example are unnecessary because we are born with the latent ability to communicate telepathically. All we have to do is learn to use this ability. Everyone has experienced many times thinking about someone and then they suddenly get a phone call from that person. We tend to blow these kinds of things off and call it "coincidence" but its not. Or suddenly we start thinking about someone and in a minute or the phone rings and its that person and you say "I was just thinking about you!" I generally tell them "I KNEW it was you!" because I DID know. But when we blow it off we lose the chance to explore why this happens. We are capable of far more than we realize through our minds, thoughts and feelings. Much of these abilities are activated through meditation and developing self awareness. 🌿

Good idea to start with bats... With mantasis not so ... Harder to separate mating and eating sounds ....

Yes it will. Because we already understand the animals. That they beg for mercy not to be killed.

Imagine one day, we can all communicate with animals. I hope it will be at the same time meat grows in laboratories.

How is this AI? Isn’t it just cross-referencing noises with actions?
@featherfiend9095
@featherfiend9095 Жыл бұрын
So in the above case it is learning more about those interactions and able to make inferences that map sound to actions. But it’s generalizable because not every possible combination of noises was the algorithm given but instead the algorithm was able to make inferences on sounds it never heard before and still accurately categorize them. We humans are the same. We are both predicting “machines”. We aren’t uploaded with all knowledge , we instead use past experiences to aid us in making inferences in new situations.

Yes but no. The key idea behind this AI (known as Deep Learning, specifically) is that it trains on data to discover novel patterns in that dataset. You have to first train it and know the answers for that smaller dataset but in the process of doing that it picks up on patterns we humans wouldn’t have even recognized. Then we throw it data it has never seen before (once the training process is complete) and it is able to be quite accurate in those scenarios too. It is truly learning, not just performing some lookup on a table.
