Barak valley was part of sylhet which was added to assam for giving administrstive viability to assam in 1874.just like goalpara..it was always bengali speaking area.

Undivided Goalpara has the goalporiya dialect which in North Bengal is said kamatapuri or bhawoyia or rajbongshi which was very much prevalent back then as well.. The dialect has both touches of Assamese and Bengali.

Barak valley people are not Bangali, our mother tongue is Sylheti and we have our own Sylheti Alphabet and literature. Sylheti language is not dialect of Bangali. In Barak valley our Sylheti language should be official like Assamese. Bangali language is killing our Sylheti language. Sylheti language is for both Hindu and Muslim.

@@letslearnletslearnletslearn Brother see the history 1000 years ago Bengali and Assamese language separated. See Assamese alphabet is almost like Bengali alphabet. But Assamese has separate ethnic identity. But pure Assamese speakers are limited. If the actual people are counted, the number of Bengalis will be more. Because the Bengalis of the Brahmaputra valley use Assamese language as their mother tongue and many tribal speakers left their own language and adopted Assamese language.
