In many Australian states, protesting on “critical infrastructure” like roads and bridges can be harshly penalised.
Anti-protest laws were introduced in 2022, and can include fines of up to $22,000 and up to two years in jail.
Lawyers and activists say the laws are cruel and against democracy, while government figures and police officials say the “mayhem” caused by protestors needs to be stopped.
Shortly after they were introduced, the country started to see its first people charged with allegations of illegal protesting.
We sought them out, to investigate the country’s history of protesting, how it has developed in the 2010s, and what might be next.
