geoguessr i think is more based on knowing what things are exclusive to certain areas. someone could know barely anything about the actual country or why the borders are like that but if they know that street sign only shows up there, they can get the answer

Our capital city (Amsterdam) is located in Noord Holland. The Netherlands are often called Holland. But its a common mistake. Most people in the Netherlands don’t like being called Holland, because many live in other parts of the Netherlands. Hope this helps!! :DD And dont worry, if you didn’t knew, you hopefully know now :)))

@ame-bi
@ame-bi 18 күн бұрын
While Turkish did take them from German, ö and ü does not use umlauts. They are their own letters that is part of the alphabet, which is not the case for German. Umlauts go on top of other letters and change their pronunciation, they are accent marks. These are called Dotted Letters in Turkish which also includes i, not ï, which would be the version with umlauts

7:32 a good rule of thumb to keep in mind when guessing UK: If it looks like a really nice (probably rich) suburban area, it’s more than likely the south of the country. They tend to have a much higher wage. If it looks like worse it’s probably the North. The North typically has a much lower income than the south since most businesses (historically) are based in the South. This is called the North-South Divide, but I think it’s lessening since some businesses have been leaving the south and moving their HQ elsewhere. Source: I’m from England.

Okay, straight up, at 8:00, I saw that tree and my first thought was Japan, not just because I consumed WAY too much manga and anime as a kid, but I've never really seen anywhere else with a tree shape like that, in a place that's also packed with so much suburban housing/paving, then the shaping of kanji on the sign (forgive me if it's another form of japanese characters), and the final nail was the sakura tree you glazed over and tbh that was the best I did lmao----But, tbh??? Getting just one answered THAT quickly?? Off the shape of a singular tree???? This apparent lack of geography knowledge of Americans is a meme here in Brazil. Like,when I talk to people from the US they often think that I live in an African country that speak Spanish. I think its a manifestation of a nationalist culture that shapes people to only think about their own country. And also, maybe it has something to do with the narrative that America is the land of opportunities and so everything that an American needs is in their own country, a mentality that result's in the absence of the desire to know the world as a whole by Americans.I would love to know what you think. Is this aspect of Americans related to their educational system or is caused by a cultural trait? Anyways, I don't agree with any type of stereotype related to" Americans being dumb". It's a generalist, fake and flat perception of a country and being a latina, I know pretty well how badly this view affects a certain group.

i'm an american w a special interest in geography so i've seen a lot of well-intended ignorance about where things are in the world, and in my experience, something about brazil really confuses us. i think it's the wild blend of cultures y'all have. it's so diverse that our little american brains can't comprehend it or something. i assume that's why nobody here gets anything about india or china either LMAO.

it also definitely is that we don't learn it nearly enough at school. we spend MUCH more time on american history and geography -- i know a ton of people who had to memorize a song naming all 50 states during grade school who still remember most of the words, but those same people probably couldn't correctly label half of a map of south america. it's just not a priority in our education system and i've never understood why.

Well, you are correct Americans believe in US exceptionalism, from conditioning and educational system, but the US doesn't produce anything. US economics is over 70% consumptiom only, then FIRE industries then a very miniscule manufacturing. So you got it, Americans are into nationalism for no good reason since everything they needed are coming from the global south.

i was like 'yea im so calm i dont care if you mess it up' then you said new holland, and that holland was in denmark and i had to walk away. btw china doesnt allow google maps access to a lot of places in it, so if you see a script similar to chinese you're most likely in japan, south korea is possible but ive seen japan about 20 times more than ive seen korea. also in japan you'll see street lights like lamp posts having a base that is like covered in yellow and black tape, thats a dead giveaway.

I'm from North Holland in the Netherlands and from the words I was agreeing with Albania but when the words New Holland were shown I immediately knew it was Turkey. We have a large Turkish community in the Netherlands, I think there was an influx of Turkish migrant workers in the 50s and 60s

6:55 BATMAN, TÜRKIYE?!
@ame-bi
@ame-bi 18 күн бұрын
Yeah! We are not sure where the name came from but three leading theories are that it is a shortened version "Bakmaktan" which means facing to, "Batı Raman" meaning the west side of the nearest mountain called Raman or that it is directly taken from the old measuring unit literally called batman. It somehow has no correlation with BatMan. Turkish people joke about this a lot too. Crazy coincidence in terms of language evolution.

I use languages a LOT in Geoguessr. Fun fact! Vietnam uses Roman letters with a lot of diacritics ever since missionaries came a long time ago and displaced Chinese characters there. So it's the only SE Asian country without its own script. Thai usually stand out for me because it has a lot of arch shapes, but telling Cambodian from Lao can be hard since I can't read them.

I also get obsessed with GeoGuessr for like a few days and then don't play for months or years at a time. I still pay for a sub thought because it's cheap, and I think it's an important thing to keep going. It's a fun and educational game. I like to go really slow and look for clues as to where I am and try to find the exact location of places. It's super fun to me.

Loved this, you are terrific! Jsyk, if you are reading Chinese it has to either be Hong Kong (drive on left) or Taiwan (drive on right). Mainland china is not in the game yet except for very specific locations. Also, when you see simpler characters like this, it is Japanese. Chinese characters are more complex and intricate 😊
