Man so sad to hear about Ed. So passionate about comics seemed like a cool guy too. Hope he’s up there with Stan and Jack shooting the shit… Godspeed Ed!

I read a while back that one way to greatly improve both your drawing and inking skills was to find pencil drawings of your favorite comic artists online, print them off and practice inking them. I did this for a while and tried to ink some Kirby stuff. It was extremely difficult because of all the incredible detail Kirby put into each page. If you were on a deadline, you would have to simplify some of his stuff, just to get it done on time. While a lot of people hate Colletta’s inking, I respect the guy. I think he was focused on the business and getting the job done rather than creating art or making the art look fabulous. He didn’t sacrifice good trying to get perfect.

I always felt that Kirby was one of the few artists of his time to actually draw 'real' cars (like a Dino 246, or a '63 Corvette) where most others would simply do generic vehicles - I guess he was something of a car enthusiast himself.

Every single time I see original kirby...I think to myself how in awe I would have been if I were seeing these come through the office...the power in just the black and white...hell even just his pencils do the same thing for me.😊

I believe the Tales Of Asgard Surtur the Fire Demon page might be Kirby inking himself.

Colletta, Stone, Ayers, Sinnott and Royer all have interesting inking chops accompanying Kirby in my opinion. I still like Sinnott best though, not just for Kirby either but generally speaking, inking for others as well (i think Sinnott was by far Ron Frenz's best inker) and doing his own art.

Some lesser-known Kirby inkers I love include John Severin (cover Strange Tales 138), John Romita Sr. (cover of Tales to Astonish 77), Dan Adkins (couple of Captain America interiors circa issue 105 or so) and Christopher Rule (late ‘50s and really early ‘60s sci-fi stuff).

The thing with Vinnie is that he could do a good job when he wanted to, the problem is he seldom wanted to.

Just look at the Thor pages that Bill Everett inked and you can see the difference.

When Jim mentioned ego the living planet feeling so much like a Kirby creation something that came to my mind regarding who was responsible for what is Kirby had so much more time actually spent with his characters. Well all know he spent way more time drawing comics than Stan probably spent actually writing them. so another thing that translates into is the amount time Kirby spends in those worlds which helps lead to all his awesome creations.

"Part 2 the POWER of Thor" is from the first appearance in JIM #83, as seen at the top of that page. It was inked by Joe Sinnott, and the face is typical of Joe's work at that time. Joe often said he felt that he sometimes put too much of his own style on Jack's faces.

You've done a couple of month by month surveys of the first Marvel books. When you see how slapdash the Kirby romance art looks compared to his monster art produced at the same time, the difference is usually Colletta. Kirby, who helped invent the genre, had already done some of the richest romance art in all of comics, and never devalued any genre he was working in.

I agree that Chic Stone is underappreciated. Just because Joe Sinnott and Mike Royer were better at inking Kirby doesn't mean Chic wasn't a badass. And probably Colletta is over-denigrated. He sucks sometimes but sometimes he does pretty damn well on Kirby. Vinnie's inks in this edition look really sweet.

This inspired me to whip out the New Gods artist’s edition. The Colletta stuff looks very rushed except when he takes time to change women’s faces to look more like his own drawing style. Some panels look pretty great but when you get to the Royer inked stuff it is immediately obvious how much more care is put into the work. Every detailed Kirbyism left intact… 🧐🤓

......Comic Sequential Art Medium walks a delicate balance between the story written and the illustration. When you get it right, MASTERPIECE, get it wrong and it gets picked apart forever and is forgettable and throw-away junk. PEACE Gentlemen and God bless us each and every;.....long live the inspiration of modern comics Jack KING Kirby.

Besides the writers, could it also be trying to get anatomy “right” limits the artists from taking chances or pushing poses?

For the Thor stuff, VC was the right choice, gave the epics a woodcut kind of feel to the Asgard stuff. Not a good choice when he inked the FF though.

Chic Stone's inks are far better than some fans would have you think. He brought a Caniff influence that blends well with Kirby. George Roussos/Bell did not do the best job on some of his Kirby inks -- but the Tales Of Asgard pages he inked are sometimes stellar. It's a conundrum. As for VC's inks? Well, take a look through the FF Artist Edition and compare Vinnie's Thor inks with Joe Sinnott's FF inks. Joe's are always slick, sharp, and every line drawn with intent. Joe had no more or less time than Vinnie had to do the job -- and never cut corners, and never drew an unattractive line.

The inks George Roussos (aka George Bell) did for Kirby’s Sgt. Fury issues look pretty good, in my opinion, because the subject matter is better-suited to a raw, less-nuanced approach to art. Or so I think.
