How bad is the Chinese economy? We hear it everyday in the news, but what is the economic situation on the ground in China? In today's video, I hit the streets of Shanghai and explore a local neighborhood seeing what life is like in China in 2023 and share my experiences of speaking with some Chinese youth about the future of the Chinese economy

The American equivalent saying would be, "get off their high horses". This is common in many develop economy. Hong Kong was/is like this for a long time so much so that for the decades, the city has been introducing labor from surrounding poorer countries. It is true in the North America as well.

I assume the young man did say not everyone can work in a building, presumably doing office work. I appreciate what I think is a growing phenomenon here in the US of young adults choosing trades over university educations, since various trades here have shortages of skilled workers and our workers can make a comfortable living working in such trades, at least for the foreseeable future. Perhaps no parallel to this phenomenon exists right now in China.

This is a very interesting topic. During the Gilded Age 1920s, I imagine many Americans were aspired to make quick money not through working in the factories and on farms. Then the Great Depression happened and the ensuing World War II brought US to the height of manufacturing and decades of prosperity...

I'm curious about what you mean about "the countryside which isn't there in Europe or the US."? The US is filled outside of cities, full of amazing and varied countrysides! Vast forested areas of wilderness, pastoral grassy plains with colorful wildflowers, and gentle rolling hills leading up to mountain ranges like the Rockies, which cover 3,000 miles across North America (from New Mexico to British Columbia are there for all to enjoy. A sub-range of the Appalachian Mountains, the Great Smoky Mountains is another and is known for the fog hanging around the tops of the peaks, leading to the "smoky" effect which it is named after. And then there is Grand Teton which encompasses 485 square miles of natural beauty. Another is the Sierra Nevada mountain range, which is so vast that it has three national parks and each is full of both breathtaking and serene views, wildlife of all kinds, hiking, camping and other outdoor experiences. Those are Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park, and Kings Canyon National Park. These places are a few among many that offer both serene landscapes, and bubbling brooks, strong rivers and stunning waterfalls of all shapes and sizes. Each of the 50 states has it's own special characteristics. Some have lush green hilly countrysides, dotted with family farms and homesteads, and others have deserts with amazing rock formations that you will find nowhere else in the world. And with all the coastline, there is a vast difference between the variety of shorelines of the East and West coasts, not to mention the marshlands, river deltas and the Everglades. That is just the "tip-of-the-iceberg", and it can probably never be fully explored in just one lifetime. So I have no idea how you can say that the countryside isn't there in Europe or the US, as you can see plenty of it even here on KZbin, and books and magazines.

As a chinese who currently lived in us, this vedio brought me back to my lovely hometown Shanghai😭 Talking about the high unemployment rate, many people will point out two factors. The first factor is that China is transitioning from labor-intensive to capital - and technology-intensive industries, but the latter absorb fewer jobs than the former. The second factor is that the current distribution system needs to be reformed, and young people at the bottom are afraid to marry because they lack money. Many people think the government should copy the Nordic welfare state and tax the rich heavily. All in all, I am glad to see that cyrus is promoting the exchanges between the two countries. As I have met a lot of super nice people since I came to the us, I also hope that more Americans can go to China to see what Chinese really look like.

Actually the Nordic countries tax the middle class heavily to fund their welfare programs. That's where the money is. It might be a good idea for China to do that also, but the first source of money for social programs ought to come from ending the massive stealing and wasting of money by the Xi Jinping regime.

China has many beautiful places and a lot of great infrastructure and beautifully designed and lighted buildings. In America environmentalists do not want anything but solar and wind and maybe some bike paths. Many great parks, infrastructure, and buildings were created in the last 100 years. Unfortunately, we are just sitting on our laurels trying to figure out where our country should go next. Drugs are killing off many who cannot seem to find a place to fit in. We are losing our work ethic as more and more are finding it easier to rely on the government.

The Analogy of that is American ignoring one Chine principle, acting as if Taiwan was an independent country. Which is not. China strives for peaceful reunification but if America is planning to stir the pot, Chinese are prepared to go the forcefully way as well. In Ukraine Putin had no other choice. They refused to give him any guarantees, they trained terrorists to infiltrate Russia. They even refused Zelensky to sign a peace deal in the first weeks of war. Now we see Ukraine in total ruins. Chinese and Taiwanese must do everything possible to kick out Americans out of their affairs or history will repeat itself with Taiwan. And it wont end well for Taiwan.

The unemployment rate in China in the first half of 2023 is 5.3%. The economy in China is very healthy and growing well in recent years in the sense that the high-tech sector is growing rapidly while real estate industry is shrinking. The industrial goods produced in China afterwards are going to be more competitive in the global market and the western countries are going to lose more and more well-paid jobs if the trade globlization continues.

Americans don't have a problem with the People of China, but the Government. They also have a problem with ours, many Nations do. A People should NOT be defined by their Government, because People and Governments have very different agendas. Regular People just want to work, live good lives, and enjoy their time with friends and family, while Governments are always looking to gain power and expand their influence. Conflict is no longer needed for growth, we can focus on freedom and innovation, that will lead us to prosperity. Those Nations who do not put in the work, will not meet success.

Americans think that Chinese people hate them because of the usa’s containment policy and hateful rhetoric of her politicians but Chinese people have grown more mature than Americans do who are indoctrinated by their own media, prepared by their own government to go to war against China. "the third place" isn't exclusively for Asia, Starbucks, of course, wants everyone to consider them their comfort zone. It's been part of their corporate culture since 1971.

Hi Cyrus, great video. A few months ago I watched a CGTN show on organic farming in China, which apparently is growing. Do you ever find organic vegetables and fruits in the big city markets?

thanks Cyrus for your hard work. In Chinese we say " 读万卷书,行万里路“ which means, you can not only relies on books but also go down to contact the realities and real persons, not just talk to a few people but a lot of them to know the truth. You are definitely well known in China as you have been keeping promoting the friendly relationship of China and US and the West. we all love our own motherland so we need to respect each other and have a peaceful healthy world.

To be able to speak in both languages puts you way above the western media when it comes in China. The current high unemployment may be due to retrenchment among tech companies due to ongoing chip restrictions by US.

China actually started voicing its concern of having trined too many people for white collar jobs about 2 years ago and started changing their education structure to allow more people to go into bluecollar jobs. Similar to issues in US. If everyone is a middle manager or a banker, who will fix your roads or your pipes? The problem is that they only started this 2 years ago, and like the man said, he's 28 and many of his generation do now want to work below their education. So they would rather be unemployed looking for work than get retrained to go work in a factory or build a building.

Blame America. Yes that may be the problem. Maybe unemployment because the Chinese economy needs to allocate more wealth to the household and less to the state or maybe the crackdown on the Tech companies who used to hire most of these young graduates?

The last few years a lot of college/university grads are coming out, that's partially responsible for the high youth unemployment. The COVID recovery has been slow. That doesn't help either.

@@comeforaride Expectation and entitlement is the problem. I watched another video about a girl just got her degree in business management. She said she can't even finf an asistant manager job. Reality is nobody will hire a manager without experience. It's pity, university does not teach reality. I have an engineering class. The professors divided us up into several team to develop and bid for a project. The winners get A and everyone else get F. He said in real life there is no runner up. A great lesson.
