You've taken on a monumental task. Many, many years ago I worked at an RV company that was supposed to have a stellar reputation. After seeing how they assembled things, pointed fingers at everyone for screw ups, constantly went cheap on materials, it was a wonder to me that they stayed in business, which they ultimately didn't. Pine was the wood of choice as it was lightweight and easy to work, except they always bought the lowest grade available. Eventually, too little, too late, they shifted to aluminum tubing for frames, much better construction. With your skills and adaptive abilities you may want to consider a TIG welder and moving to aluminum framing. Even a spool gun attachment for your MIG would be a workable solution. Those wood frame RV's depended heavily on the adhesive and plywood skin for structural strength. A scary thing. With aluminum you would avoid the problem of structural rot with water infiltration. This will be a good series to watch as you invent solutions to fix previously flawed engineering.
@Ollaris3 жыл бұрын
Aluminum would be great! But way too expensive where I live for the amount that I need. I will figure something out how to make it waterproof.

Good on you sport! That project looks truly daunting to me as so much of the wooden frame is rotten. Surely measuring then refabricating the entire frame would be stronger and easier than replacing rotten parts before recladding the skin as you could use screws instead of staples on the joints. It would appear that the bedding mastic has failed on the roof joints at the gutter channel level. The rest of the damage is just water ingress from this point. It is not an uncommon thing on caravans and motor homes as water tends to pool on flat roofs and breaks the mastic down over time.

Im sure you will just use this as a template to build a whole new structure underneath and use the skin to cover it up. And as far as how to attach the pieces together instead of using staples (the little pieces that you didn’t knew how they were called) ;) you could use some “T” brackets and with the help of a router recess them to keep them flush with the wood. Can’t wait to see you get started on this one! It’s gonna be massive hehe and I know you’ll do a great job as always.
@Ollaris3 жыл бұрын
Staples!!!! That’s it! Good idea about the T brackets, that would probably take ages. I have to think about that.
@leobrent79263 жыл бұрын
Ollari's i dont think it would take too long, specially if you make a jig for it. After all... to do it with pocket holes you have to clamp it to a jig anyways. And is not that much more expensive, but is much stronger with the T brackets. In any case... I was just making a suggestion hehe. And whatever you decide, I know it will be the right decision for you because you do quality work. :)

Good thing you are a wood worker, because this thing needs some WORK. Can't wait to see it all happen! Instead of pocket screws, wouldn't it be easier/stronger to just put the screw through one piece into the end of another? At least for the places where you can do that, then use pocket screws for the rest. Oh, and the tacks you didn't know the name of are known as staples in English (in the US anyways). Any nail-type-thing that has two legs is considered a staple.
@Ollaris3 жыл бұрын
Right! Staples! I have to make some tests to see which one is stronger, thanks !

Go down to a steel/metal recycler or similar and get your material there rather than new. The past year or so has been about the worse time to build anything out of any type of wood over here.

Wood is SO expensive where I am, might be cheaper and stronger to switch to metal?

It’s the same for steel over here. Not to mention the weight. I have to keep the weight down because we have very strict rules how much weight you can carry on each specific vehicle.
