When adding in what he said about how he wasn't that interested and how Kevin said in his book that he had the brains and the skills to really analyze everything but not have much heart to drive compared to brain, it all adds up. Maybe it just took him a while to realize that racing may not be the career for him that he originally thought. Though it's nice to see the analysis skills Kevin brought up as Jolyon's strongpoints being put to good use in F1 through all the analysis content he makes for the sport.

I really like him as a commentator and analyst. Glad to see that where one thing didn't work out quite so well for him, he was able to end up in a position where things go better for him. It's also worth saying that being happy with what you're doing is really worth a lot more than doing something you dreamed of, but are miserable while doing it, even if the dream thing is considered to be more desirable. I went to college specifically to become a ship's officer in the merchant marine. I then got to do exactly what I wanted to do. I was a deck officer sailing on container ships all over the world. I made a lot of money and had tons of time off and really good benefits. I hated it, and quit after 4 years to become a truck driver. I took about a 50% pay cut over all, went from working 6 months of the year to working 70 hour weeks like 40 weeks a year, and 50 hour weeks the rest of the time, and was far more happy with life that way. Now I work with my dad teaching people to drive at a truck driving school. It's way less money and I spend a lot more time at work. No one hears my job and says, "wow that must be so cool" or, "Oh many I bet you make BANK doing that," and truck drivers aren't generally very well respected. I would much rather be a truck driver for the rest of my life than spend 1 more month at sea as a ship's officer. It's far better to be happy.

Well said. For anyone who might read this: I decided I'd be a doctor at the age of 4, and spent my whole life dedicated to that calling. I was bloody good at it and well liked by both colleagues and patients. Guess what? I hated every minute, not helped that being a UK doctor is one of the hardest and most thankless and miserable tasks you can possibly imagine for a lot less money than you'd think... A life wasted - My advice if you're not happy with what you are doing is to ask "Why?" then do something positive about it.

Jokes aside, I just watched F1 regularly since last year, yet simply due to me being a statistics maniac, I knew that Jolyon really did have 2 rough seasons in F1. Didn't really know what caused it back then, though. By the way, hard to believe that KMag and Nico actually were about to be paired as early as 2017, eventually happening 6 years later. 🗿

At the end of the day he wasn’t a remotely decent F1 driver, but he did win the GP2 championship with one of his various wins and poles that season being at Monaco of all places, and winning the championship over Stoffel Vandoorne who’s regarded to be one of if not the greatest junior drivers of his generation so clearly there’s some degree of ability there as a racing driver
@aberamagold7509
@aberamagold7509 Жыл бұрын
He won GP2 in his 4th season, whereas really good drivers win it, or at least come close, in their first year. E.g. George Russell, who between 2008 and 2018 competed in 19 different championships. In those 10 years, George finished in... First Place: 13 times Second Place: 4 times Third Place: 2 twice. 😙 Tbh, I read this about George a while ago and have been waiting for a chance to use it 😂.

@jbaidley
@jbaidley Жыл бұрын
Even describing it as his 4th season is generous, given his two seasons of "FIA Formula Two" before he entered GP2. Jolyon was lucky to make it into F1, and probably wouldn't have done without the power of his family motorsport connections. That he wasn't good enough for F1 still leaves him as one of the best drivers in the world by any lesser yardstick, and he's found his real calling in punditry and analysis. That's nothing to be ashamed of.
@notthefia9154
@notthefia9154 Жыл бұрын
@@aberamagold7509 that’s a fair use of that stat I can’t lie 😂, yeah he was without a doubt more on the side of using his experience within the championship of the way the tyres worked and understanding the car more than probably anyone else, but having all that experience is worth nothing if you don’t have a degree of ability to put it to good use

I think Vandoorne was the bigest lost for F1. The worst time for McLaren, one the the most difficult and political team mate Fernando, who basicaly run the team (over Brown) around him. On the top of that, Brown didn't really wanted Stoffel, absolutely no support from him, just waiting to put Lando in the car. You can tell that DeVries was in front of Tsunoda ^^, Jolyon in front of K-Mag...

This is like asking if someone was a bad NFL quarterback, premier league footballer or a bad NBA forward. He made it to the top tier. Even if he didn't deserve his seat, he was still *good enough* to make his way into a seat he didn't deserve. That's still head and shoulders above thousands and thousands of aspirants. (I'm not saying I think he didn't deserve it. I think objectively having it is the same as deserving it. As baseball players say "you have to be good to be lucky and you have to be lucky to be good.") And if it set him up for his current role as a thoughtful and intelligent analyst, we all benefited from it.

As someone that follows Jolyon a bit in his GP2 days, think the assessment is a bit harsh - yes he only won it in his 4th year, but if you watch some of races he's done, there would be enough divebombs you saw that would recall a certain Danny Ric in a Red Bull. I do agree his F1 performance is disappointing & Carlos is definitely a better driver, but saying this made Renault jumps from 8th to 6th doesn't really add up - Carlos scored 6 points from those 4 races and without those they would still finish in front of Haas

I always look forward to Palmer’s race analysis as not only does he have the experience, but the skills to explain his valuable point of view. As far as his F1 career, who can say? There are so many factors to analyze when evaluating a driver, yet how many of us truly understand what goes on behind the scenes? Looking at the recent form of both Renault and Alpine perhaps there’s plenty we don’t know.

How Bad Was Jolyon Palmer in F1? depends on which context, an example; could you really speak of Joylon's lack of talent knowing you yourself will never be a world champion on anything, never mind competitively drive a Formula 1 car? Realistically Joylon is far from the bottom of the bad drivers that made it into F1, he actually won the merit to be there by being a GP2 World Champion, and the whole " ohh that season was weak " trust me, the weakest driver on that grid would run circles around any of us in the comment list. Joylon was not a bad driver, he just failed to put together a path for him to display his full potential, like many before him and many after him. interesting that in 2023 - you have Hulk & K-Mag racing together...... And yeah - Palmer had to create a splash or have a big $ backer - he didn't. Renault made the only decision they could - surprised they waited almost 2 seasons... As an analyst & commentator he is excellent and one of my go-to's

cool to see that he admits he was pretty poor in the driver’s seat and has found something that he’s actually really good at and fits in

people need to understand that these arent by any means bad drivers, palmer, mazepin, sirtokin, stroll, as well as most f2 drivers are very capable. all these drivers are very close when it comes to driving ability and other factors like a car that might not suit them or they might not understand well as well as psychological factors can play a way bigger role than pure speed

I see a lot of similarities between him and Nyck De Vries. Let's hope Nyck can do better this season because he won't get a second year if he continues like this. Helmut isn't a patient man!

He was bad, but nowhere near the monstrosity that was Mazepin. Palmer was a 4th year GP2 winner and his money came in handy in securing a F1 seat

People have been telling in that forever on his videos. It's been on every single one that randomly pops up in my suggested feed and every single time people complain about it. I think it's the first "editing thing" this guy learned how to do so now he refuses to drop it no matter how lame it is.

No matter how 'bad' he was I still have the utmost respect for these drivers for even getting to that position, even Goatifi/ mazaspin.

On paper Jo's GP2 championship was very impressive and quiet dominant, but when he came into F1 I recall a number of drivers and experts dismissing his GP2 victory as not being overly impressive. He had a commanding lead over the championship including beating then GP2 rookie Vandoorne, but by that point as a 4-year GP2 veteran he had no real competition and was driving for DAMS one of the 2 best teams in GP2 (The other being ART, Vandoorne's drive and being run by Vasseur) so in a sense it was his championship to lose. Jo was said to be a very slow learner that took a very long time to learn and adapt to a new car, which made him a poor choice overall for F1 that changes cars so fundamentally so often. His F1 career will unfortunately be mostly remembered for Alonso's radio outbursts: "Where is Palmer!? ... Karma!" But behind the scenes Jo is a great guy and has a really good reputation in the paddock. While Brundle was more successful in F1, both he and Jo seem to have found their true calling behind the microphone. Jo has been an excellent commentator and analyst and I'd pin him to be the one to eventually replace Brundle when he retires.
