AA is NOT "hit or miss" for big league talent. Everyone at the AA level has big league talent, they just aren't consistent yet. And that's why Jordan flamed out so hard at that level. He should have started in Rookie ball, where the talent truly is "hit or miss."

I've talked to all of them about this. All three opinions were nearly identical. Michael Jordan came back to baseball after a 14 hiatus, at 31 years old, and showed outstanding speed with markedly improved fielding throughout the year. The best line I got - and this is from the one of the three that was an All-Star in MLB three times - was "Man, I was lucky to hit .200 in some spring trainings. This guy hadn't touched the dirt in 15 freakin' years!" --- Everyone has an opinion and I'm sure some intelligent people said he stunk, but I can tell you the smartest pitching coach I've ever met, one of the best managers I've ever met and a great player all thought he had a huge upside had he played the game earlier.

@@jacklaker1939 That's not what I'm saying. How good is the average baseball player and is Michael Jordan as good or better than the average player? My point is that the average MLB player has a combination of talent and skill, specifically tailored to baseball in order to survive in the league. That level of talent and skill is not necessarily transferable across different sports. That's not even getting into what it takes to be a top 50 to top 100 player.
@sleepyheadz3 ай бұрын
@@GooberDoober-fm4ws Well, is there a baseball player who is able to crack the NBA and good enough to start on any lottery team? Baseball is a game of statistics. What's crazy is that you're a pretty good player if you only fail 3 out of 4 attempts. It is not a sport that pure talent or genetics could quickly catapult you into all-star level like football can. There isn't a talented player in the majors who hasn't put in the reps. You're not shooting at a dumb hoop. You're swinging at a ball that swerves on command from another thinking player. Centerfielders, shortstops, second basemen and third basemen are great athletes. Sure, maybe jordan wouldnt have been an All star if he started playing baseball at age 20 but he sure as hell would have been decent to play for a team even as a bench pllayer. There are instances where many superstar athletes had multiple careers in high school and college in at least 2 different sports. Allen Iverson was contemplating playing football professionally. I believe he was even drafted if Im not mistaken. There was one dude in early 90s who played both footbal and baseball professionally for some time. Forgot his name Wilt chamberlain was awesome track and field athlete and exceptional long jumper. he hold several records for long jump in his high school or something like that. So, seeing Jordan playing any sport and being decent even good at it is not far fetched at all. many pro athletes played different sports before choosing and sticking to one. One of his coaches said he could have been comparable to Dave Winfield if he'd stuck with the game after high school. It's remarkable he did as well as he did after not playing the game at all for 13 years, and he improved significantly in the Arizona Fall League where many of the top prospects were sent. I thought he had a legit swing.

I don't think Jordan has Windfield's strength. He would have fit in the 80s as one of those contact/speed guys though.

That suspension theory is funny. While it benefitted jordan and the commissioner, it didn't really help reinsdorf. He was making so much money from jordan, so him just leaving due to a suspension made no sense for him. If you say he'll still make money from baseball, that in itself is a gamble. Compared to jordan the basketball player, baseball is a big unknown

Pretty much every top sportsman (talking about sports that requires athletic skills) has some inner talent and body development and also strong mental and quick reflexes, all those features are compatible with many other sports, so they have the skills to become top players in those other sports, but of course they also need to get used to it and gain some experience.

If Jordan had baseball full time he could've been a star. It's a harder game than it looks.
@dougfowler136826 күн бұрын
Older fans will know the starter on a Series champ I think Jordan would have been like - Omar Moreno. Baseball gets harder as you get higher up due to curves and other pitches thrown for strikes consistently. I don't know that he could have hit for power consistently, but starting at 18 he'd have been a good singles and doubles hitter. You can't teach the natural speed he had, and while he might have struck out more than the superstars, he'd have gotten on base enough to be a reliable starter and, on the right team, like Moreno on the We Are Family Bucs, been a key contributor. Hitting a base ball is the hardest thing at the highest level, but he would have had natural athleticism to overcome anything else, and been a decent hitter.
