How Band Members Get Paid

In this video, I talk about how band members get paid in general. Of course, I can only speak for myself based on my own experiences in the matter.
I also discuss an ongoing issue among bands and its members, specifically in the matter of finance. I give my friend as an example of this matter.
Pretty much, the theme of this video is to address the somehow "taboo" issue of money and how it must be divided among band members and how addressing this issue from the get go can contribute to a more harmonious professional relationship!

THANK YOU this video helped my mood! :D I totally agree. If everyone contribute to the band it should be equally split between members. I have heard that drummers an bassists ain't getting paid the same way which I don't really understand. Of course I can't speak for others but I practice A LOT to maintain a tight beat and keep the speed up which is required in the genre I play. A live show wouldn't be the same if missing any of the members :)

If i have a band, i would suggest we paid like an employee. Everyone involve has a fixed salary. For examole, every member gets 100k per month. Then minus the sss, philhealth, pag ibig, etc. Then the rest of the money from gigs will be the band fund. And just in case a member has to leave the band, he will get his share from the fund

Hey great advice brother! I have a band where I play bass and sing and post our shows on social media get 99% of the gigs and not only that but i am also haul the PA when the location doesnt have one. Typical two wedge monitors, two mains mixer and power amp, mic stands, mics all that stuff. Yea its very tuff cause I also haul my bass rig as well. I arrive early to start setting up all the stuff. How would you recommend splitting payment if it was you? I honestly hate dragging so much stuff its very stressful but I do it so the show happens. Last gig the total amount made was 350 with a three peice band. Each guy got 100 but i set a side $50 extra for PA use. Wish i can split up evenly but it seems not fair since I have all that extra work. Advise would be appreciated.

Salute to you! Respect for doing all the things you do. Here’s how I would do it… I would go by percentage assignment so that regardless of dollar amount, everyone knows where the money is going. Off the top, I would take out a 10% finders fee for finding the gigs. I would give an equal share for the PA system (which would cover acquisition of the gear as well as the labor cost and storage cost of it).

I think if the member is absent he or she will not get paid cz her share will go to the sessionist..and of course the vocal parts or back up parts that this absent member was doing , in his or her absence the other members will make an effort to do..

That’s a pretty good point. However, my issue here is beyond the session rate and the efforts done by the other band members... in the absence of backing tracks, where does the rest of the absentee band member’s share go? He must incur all expenses resulting from his absence but he must also take home whatever is left from his share of TF.

Every band is different. Parokya has been in the industry for a long time and it works for them on the system that they are doing. Buwi agrees to that process so it’s fair game.

PNE yung band sa tingin ko tas si Buwi yung friend mo. Tama lang set-up ng Parokya, unfair naman sa majority ng band kung may share parin si Buwi sa mga gig nila dito sa Pinas. Hindi naman $ bayaran dito, bar gigs na nga lang kalimitan, bihira na mga concerts. Pano kung puro session artist na lang mag sipagtugtog sa gig at may 1 o 2 original members lang ang andun dahil iisipin ng absent may moolah parin naman kahit maliit. Diyan magkakatamaran, kaya tama lang yung PNE sa hatian. Anyways may royalties parin naman na matatanggap si Buwi sa mga album/online sales.

If I were him(assuming it's Buwi from PNE), I wouldn't take a cut from the session or road tour gigs so the sub musician would get more cut. Kasi pag hihingi pa ako ng fair cut, it would affect the rest of the members and team.

Uban Legend Di naman yung sessionista ang nagbuo ng PNE, assuming that PNE ang pinag uusapan. But then again, I’m not saying you don’t have a point. You do have a very good point. But INTRoVOYS doesn’t work that way. If we need to spend time away from the band, it’s because of FAMILY MATTERS. I own the band as much as Jonathan Buencamino, Vic Carpio, Jj Buencamino and our none stage members. So if I need to take time off... it becomes my duty to find an ample replacement and pay that person the rate agreed upon.

IMO, The absent bandmember who is absent, for whatever reason, should still have his cut. I remember this thing happened with one american bandi will no longer say which one, one guy quit the band. But since he was the founding member of that band, he asked that he should be given a cut from the earnings the band is making. They even went to court and the judge ruled that he be given a royalty since they were still using the band name wherein he was one of those who formed it

that is why i don't like to be in a band.I write my own songs,record a demo in my home and find someone to play the drums and bass for a professional recording in a studio and pay them when it's done.
