When the AFC Championship started, it looked like the making of a one-sided beatdown. In under two quarters, the Chiefs took a huge 21-3 lead over the Bengals. Some analysts already thought this game was over. Idiots like myself were ready to write the Bengals off and pencil Kansas City as the future Super Bowl contender. Well, the Bengals did the unthinkable. They came back from an 18-point lead and they ended up winning this game in overtime.
In this video breakdown, I discussed how the Bengals adjusted their coverages in-game to slow down Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs' offense. After rotating between coverages, mostly 2-high, in the first half, they used Drop 8 - Rush 3 coverages in the second half to great effect.

Some credit goes to the Bengals, but what happened at the end of the first half was the beginning of the Chiefs lose. Who calls the plays for the Chiefs? Did Patrick change the call and go for the touchdown before the half? The Chiefs got greedy thinking they could get a 4th touchdown in the first half. Not only did they stop scoring but they let down the fans with a bad call. Another 3 points would bring them to the end of the half scoring. Hell you could hear it in the crowd the let down of not kicking the field goal. The team and the crowd returned in 2nd half down, the play calling was crap compared to the first half. It is hard to get them backing into scoring mode and the Chiefs showed it. The coach should have seen that but he didn't till it was too late. When you stop scoring by not kicking the field goal things go to hell.

I may come off as an idiot, but I was essentially yelling at the screen to just run the ball? McKinnon was ripping off drive maintaining runs every time he touched the ball and with the Bengals clearly dropping 8 back, I felt like the a and b gaps were wide open to run any type of scheme they wished. Not to mention the offensive line was actually playing fantastic despite giving up 4 sacks. They weren't joe burrow type sacks where mahomes actually didnt have time. My final point is that they had the lead? And a sizable one. Who's decision was it to continue to throw when the defense is giving you exactly what you would want against a run on 40% of the snaps? I'm glad the bengals are in the superbowl, but wow, the chiefs played like it was a game of madden and panicked

Exactly, which is maybe why Bienemy is in trouble - did Reid give him too much leeway in calling the plays? Besides running the ball there are other ways to combat 8 men back, leak out the running back, throw short - that is what Brady did in the Super Bowl against the Falcons in the 2nd half. These backs could have gotten 10-15 yards a pop! But Mahomes kept looking for the big play - he said so himself - there were open plays in front but he kept looking deep I think he fell too much in love with everyone praising him for the big plays - got a swelled head & it cost him

It's a good observation that the Bengals switched up their defensive strategy significantly in the 2nd half. To me this is demonstrative of the difference between an older coach and a younger one. Andy Reid does not adjust quickly, and if the Chiefs offense is going to adjust it is on Mahomes to do so. Taylor is a young coach with a lot to prove, and he is willing to make adjustments quickly and frankly it was the difference in this game. I thought it was interesting to see that three of four head coaches that made it to the AFC/NFC Championship games were under 45. That's incredibly young for a HC, and these guys are all Gen-X or Millenials that are not afraid of change whatsoever.

I think it's a testament to the quality of Mahomes as a qb that this is what teams are willing to resort to in order to slow him down. Obviously Mahomes failed to adjust and it cost him and his team the season, but I'm confident that he'll learn from this and adjust. I believe that eventually Mahomes will reach the point where the only strategy to slow him down is to give him the Tom Brady treatment: Don't show him the same type of coverage in succession. Kudos to the Bengals defense for that halftime adjustment with only a 3 man rush; it was unconventional but interestingly effective.

There were 5 seconds left. Running would have been a bad idea. Of course, throwing it to Hill was even worse since he had two defenders in the area. The ENTIRE plan there should be to make ONE read in the end zone. If it is not there, put the ball in the dirt and kick a field goal. 24 - 10 and getting the ball is plenty.

The NFL is going to help the RAMS win the super bowl so your team has it's work cut out for them. I doubt they will be able to overcome them. Look for it in the game and see when they extend or stop drives by tossing flags for judgement calls. Pass interference, called and not called, holding, called and not called is how they do it. Good luck beating both of them.

This is the truth. I do however feel that mahomes plays consistently no matter what unlike what many believe. He often throws multiple passes that should be picked off but are just dropped every game. On the rare occasions they are picked and his stats look worse, people will then say he had a bad game, but he really plays they same every game, his numbers are just determined on if the opposition catches those easy ints. That’s why he’s one of those guys u actually have to watch to understand how good or not good he is. His numbers have always been heavily inflated for a variety of reasons, and most have taken that along with team success and declared him one of the best qbs ever, but if you watch him, he isn’t very impressive. As you pointed out, he still has never been comfortable or good at standing in the pocket and delivering tough passes downfield with his feet set. The only real times u see him stay in the pocket without moving is on rpo’s, screens, or quick/short passing game plays. Any time the play is intermediate or deep, he will almost always move around (often times there’s not even any pressure from the rush) and abandon clean pockets to throw it on the run. This game pretty much summarizes mahomes career at this point; inflated stats (first half) because of a great scheme that gets his elite weapons wide open on easy throws (not many are downfield), an absurd amount of pass attempts compared to run attempts by his offense, and great protection from his line. His line is always so good and the scheme is so good and his weapons are so uncoverable that he can get away with running around for no reason and throwing inaccurate passes even tho his guys are wide open. But the bengals knew he’s uncomfortable standing in the pocket and throwing with his feet set so they knew even without a pass rush (only 3 against a great protection unit) they could cover the receivers if they had 8 guys to do so. Without the 8, their scheme is to good and their receivers are to good to not get open. But mahomes (as he always has) brings almost all of the pressures, hits, sacks, onto himself. The rush was never getting home (for obvious reasons) but after the routes had been run and he’d been there for 4+ seconds, he became uncomfortable and needed to start running even tho he could’ve stood there literally as long as he wanted. Every time they had a pressure hit or sack, it was because he ran out of a clean pocket and ran to a d lineman and made it easier for them to get to him. Aside from not deserving to be here in the first place (buffalos dumb defensive philosophy on the 13 seconds fiasco), mahomes ran himself into a sack and missed an open kelce in the end zone because he was running instead of standing in the clean pocket, then fumbled on the hit which would’ve ended the game in regulation had Thuney not recovered it. Then in ot, got away with a game ending pick to Eli apple who dropped it (would’ve gave them the ball inside kc 20) and then on the next play, inexplicably throws into double coverage and throws a pick. This whole game perfectly summarizes him as a player, and his career.

OMG. Finally. You are so absolutely right. Mahomes does have raw talent, but no idea what to do with it, and is very limited in what he does. He can win, but like Kapernick is flawed. People will study this Bengals game just like you did and know how to shut him down from now on.
@tonj02
@tonj02 2 жыл бұрын
@@jkthewonderguy even his talent is vastly overrated. He does have some talent, but many say he is among the most talented ever when thats just not the case. They specifically say his arm is among the strongest ever, but there’s not much evidence to back that up. Most of the plays where u could point to impressive arm strength is when he’s running around and then fades away and completes a ball like 25 yards downfield, but other than that, he never really displays elite arm strength. His velocity is never really impressive (at least to my naked eye) and the statistics prove he is a mediocre at best deep ball thrower in terms of accuracy and completion %. If u watch him, he almost never throws deep passes and when he does, they’re usually inaccurate and/or underthrown. Now, being inaccurate doesn’t mean he doesn’t have arm strength so the underthrown part is the key, as I as well as a guy i know who is a mahomes fan, both have noticed how he consistently has balls that are underthrown on the rare deep passes he attempts. If ur arms strength is elite, there is no excuse for consistent underthrows when going downfield. So other than his variety of arm angle deliveries and throws on the run (not downfield), there isn’t much to point to that proves he has elite arm strength. The only one I can think of is the 2018 afccg against NE where he rolled to his right and threw a bomb to Watkins (I think) for a big gain. That was impressive and showed elite arm strength but other than that I can’t think of any other plays that prove his elite arm strength. Other than that, he doesn’t have elite size (6’3 220) and he has above average mobility sure, but it is overrated due to his elite protection and the stress his weapons put on the lb’s and db’s when they are in coverage, which give him tons of room to run whenever he wants. He’s not very fast and if he had mediocre weapons like most qb’s they’d be able to balance defending the receivers and keeping an eye on him better and he would not look good running around. So, he pretty much landed in a dream scenario with an elite scheme that has guys open every play, elite pass blocking, and elite weapons (perennial all pro wr and top 3 tight end ever, and hardman and Robinson are better 3 and 4th options then most qb’s 2nd option). If he were drafted to an average team (majority of nfl franchises) he’d have bad o line play like most qb’s do, mediocre weapons, a scheme that doesn’t have guys wide open every play, and less pass attempts to inflate his numbers.

I guarantee you put 95% any other QB in the NFL, they get the same results. Sure, you could just simply cast Tom Brady out there and say "hey, this is why you're shit at the game" but that's unfair matching. You're taking someone who's practically seen nearly every defensive play style in the book and setting him in Mahomes' spot just to spite any possible reasoning. Yes he made a few bad plays, but those were mainly pieces he's taken on over the course of his NFL career, due to consistently poor O-line performances, extreme defensive aggression, and recent unnatural developments that most other QBs hardly get. When you take someone like Jared Goff as your opposing QB, you're not going to make a whole damn saga of defensive knowledge on theories to beat them, because they are already mistake-prone. Freeze it at 4:23 - I think it is Kelce that is wide open right at the goal line, below the big C And behind him are 2 RED SHIRTS - One of them, someone says, is Pringle jumping up and down trying to get Mahomes to notice him! 2 white shirts way to the left, leaving these two wide open! Where was Mahomes looking? There are no receivers to the right, they were all to his left! 3 TARGETS FOR AN EASY TOUCHDOWN! I do wonder if Mahomes got hit and may have been in a concussion but hid it and tried to play thru it?

For all you "why didnt they run it more" people the Chiefs tried being conservative in week 17. But the Bengals prevented them from scoring and then used big offensive plays to win. To prove my point, cincinnati scores on a 40 yd screen right before halftime. Most nfl coaches KNOW NO LEAD IS SAFE you have to be aggressive.... So Kansas city definitely felt there was pressure to keep producing points.

Nice Analysis. You are absolutely right. That 2nd Half was one of Mahomes worst halves of his life and it didn;t have much to do w/ 8m zone. It's called LETDOWN after one of the greatest games ever played the week before. I do a Power Spread Podcast on Anchor/Spotify and in my Preview of the Chp game I took the Bengals for one reason - Letdown. WRs were open in the 2nd Half all over - even in your video... 1:38 - Watch closely - Mahomes comes off Hill too soon as he's about to break open at the 35 - Hardman Left Flat a more risky shot but Mahomes didn't even look over there. He also had Kelce on the sramble but that was a tough pass. 1:45 - Pringle had a step on Hilton - Mahomes led him too much. Mahomes is better than that. Also lazy read again - never looking left w/ DRob breaking open vs this 7man Zone with Wilson as Spy. 2:00 - Good Robber action but easy read for Mahomes - immediate recognition middle congested - quick look to his RB on a Swing rt - WIDE OPEN! Worse yet - he had a LB racing over in the man coverage! BENGALS IN ALL KINDS OF TROUBLE HERE! - NOTHING - Mahomes asleep! WAIT - NOT OVER! On the scramble he had Hill deep heading towards Rt SL! Big one at the start. Big one at the end. HOW IS THIS A GREAT SCHEME BY ANARUMO AND ANYTHING BUT AN UNUSUALLY POOR PERFORMANCE BY A TOP QB?? You are right about YAC in a West Coast Spread, but Andy is a BYU guy - and now Power Spread - so his Pass Spread more than that at this point. The 8M zone should be Powered against with a top Run Blocking Line that KC now possesses. Then the Misdirection/PA + RPOs all using Mahomes legs first - arm second--- improv is what he's actually best at - so like you said - this beats 8m or 7m zone - absolutely - perfect for Mahomes and KC - unless they are playing with little energy and emotionally flat! 2:23 - look at the WR over the top on the Smash Route! (btw more Air Raid than WC - Reid isn't simply a west coast guy) - wide open big play. Not "too much time" simply bad play - lazy eyes - lazy read... emotionally spent! Plus, he had "pressure to make plays" on the earlier film you are showing - the last play w/ the scramble - HE STILL DIDN'T MAKE THE PLAY! 4:00 - Your analysis is excellent here! So many out there making these vids don't even seem to know what a C6 is -- everything C2 to them... there's also a difference between Quarters (pattern matching) and Cover 4. And C3 and 3M (pattern match) and on and on.. But on this - it's a more aggressive Zone by Anarumo - than all his conservative stuff most of the game -- and executed very well by his players! You are right that Mahomes seemed out of it again - Hardman broke open late - but just staring down Hill at that point. 4:21 - Watch Pringle - 13 - TOUCHDOWN! - keep watching... he's open again on the sble for ANOTHER TOUCHDOWN! - he's actually seen leaping up and down after the first touchdown miss! Hardman was angry at Mahomes - yelling on the sidelines then Hill yelled at him. kelce pringle drob - hill was the only one who kept his cool with Mahomes ineptitude You explain the rest of the ineptitude well. The only other thing I will point out is on the BJ Hill int -- Hendrickson was in zone rt behind him -- MAHOMES THREW A DOUBLE INT!! - haha - had Bj not put his hands up - hendrickson would have intercepted-- Give the Bengals credit - great Culture created by Taylor - they play hard - execute at a high level - but the truth is - Anarumo was scared of KC Offense - like McDeromott was - like the whole NFL is.. the week before, Anarumo's scheme vs Tennessee was really aggressive - vs Oakland it was up and down. He made an adjustment in 2nd Half - even more conservative w/ a surprise blitz or two. A normal mahomes would have eaten this up alive and will in the future. Anarumo could have done the same thing in the first half and the bengals would have shut mahomes down. The Bengals players won in spite of their DC's failure this game. The players were fired up - the chiefs were totally flat. The Mahomes / Oline - that played the Bills would have had another 550 yds vs this gameplan + adjustment if they could have kept their energy going in the 2nd half!

I'm from the Cincinnati area , but until this years team , I've never been a big fan. I feel the Bengals did good adjusting their defense in the second half , but the Chiefs offence was so bad that if they were really throwing the game , they could have made it look somewhat realistic. I mean the offense was too bad to be throwing the game, it would be obvious and on steroids throwing the game with that bad 2nd half offence. So I believe the K.C. offense and coaching just flat out went bad , but not throwing the game.

The problem with his development in this front is that the play calling doesn't help either. The chiefs use of quick game and their all hitch that they were running a lot in the first half just stopped being called. The chiefs went right back to mid season "lets try to throw deep" or lets scheme open routes down the corner and with high coverage looks like this and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of their receiving core they shouldn't have done this. In the bills game the bills also came out with this kind of look but because of how close the game was the chiefs never tried anything downfield or too risky and they played more methodical which lead the bills to have to try something new. The problem at this point is that reid and Mahomes BOTH need to stop trying to put their foot on the throat of their opponents with these deep shots that will "end the game" because their efficient down to down play is far more dangerous and is unstoppable. Also Reid needs to run the ball more on these 2nd 6's with a light box and an insane run blocking o-line.
@robbiewarrene
@robbiewarrene 2 жыл бұрын
and Mahomes can't be overthrowing his check downs it's unbearable to watch him do that. And with the pick to the d-lineman, why would you throw that, I think it was a hitch screen and less of an RPO because it looked the 0-line was trying to get out in space and they basically left the left side of the d-line unblocked but either way Mahomes has got to throw that into the dirt.

Fool nothing! It's not like no one has thought of dropping 8 men back to stop the passing - it's just the reverse of 8 men in the box to stop the run Nothing the Chiefs had not seen before - the problem was their failure to adjust If they are stopping the pass, only rushing 3 men, rushing lanes were WIDE OPEN! Keep a back in, block the 3 with 3 - you have 2 linemen free to go ahead of the running back and block! They could have gotten 10-15 yards an attempt! But foolishly, dumbly, they kept passing. The underneath routes were open but Mahomes got greedy just as he got greedy at the end of the first half - kept dancing around for the big play And only at the end of the game when he knew they might lose did he drive them down for the tying field goal which would have been the winning field goal if they had just taken the points at the end of the first half And then in OT, back to being greedy, back to the big play!
