I don't know if death itself follows him but that is how Bennett feels about his luck and why he decides to live life to the fullest. He does need a hug but you might end up on fire though

My theory is Bennett is an actual God or demi-god. The game establishes a hierarchy of Gods with the seven archons being the top pantheons and lessor Gods like the Retainer under them. Like the lower Gods of Liyue were representation of aspects of Rex (the God of Contracts), the lower Gods of Monstadt would behave similar to Barbados. Bennett is the embodiment of endeavor. So when ever people attempt to achieve a goal with him hardship follows. This appears to everybody to be bad luck but the people it mostly effects directly are the people around him. The vision could instead be a type of internal monologue with his Godly aspect.
