I also find it interesting how Sanders starts with the context, I guess he knows that if he starts with the answer ("Yes, but") people are only going to listen to the first bit and then tune out the nuance. Embedding the answer in the context encourages people to see the nuance (and makes it harder to cut it in a way that misrepresents him).

Yea, the way he admits to having to pay more taxes is even said in a way that makes it sound like you'd be cutting him out of context if you only quoted that bit. It sounds like the middle of a thought.

EXACTLY, I hate when people ask bullshit questions that ignore context. Putting the context in before you give people an answer is a brilliant way to inoculate against a negative reaction.

Honestly why it was so easy to call the media out on their bs with their recent accusations of him supporting and admiring authoritarian leaders. It was so easy to throw the full context of the comments in question back at anyone making those claims. Dude's walking a tightrope over an active volcano and he's doing well so far.

claire b i would guess a bit of that but I think people with a lot of political experience, like Bernie, do have training in how to make speeches convincing etc. I’m sure they don’t plan every sentence (would be impossible bc you can’t know what others would say in a debate beforehand) but they probably have “guidelines” in mind as to how they want to come across

I’d suspect it’s second nature by now. After all, the things he’s focusing on are the details of the policies he’s proposing and the impact they will have on people. He can probably intuitively feel the proper phrasing and anticipate how to craft his structure before the final phrase, having some idea of how he’s going to land it.

I think it is a little bit of both. Bernie has had to make his massage simple enough for everyday people for decades, so that's conscient. On the other hand he has developed the need to disarm the loaded questions he always receives, I think he goes on automatic every time he is asked a question now.

G Soap The reason he doesn’t answer it is because it’s nonsensical. The question implies federal finance is like our household finance but most people in America don’t know the mere ~ on you tube for 6.5 minutes ~ “The Basics of Modern Money” he has to come up some explanation that will pacify the mass of ignorant people. And you are part of the reason for this peddling your taxes are theft nonsense. Here’s the answer to the question I convince my representative and senator to sign off on the bill proposed and the president agrees and signs. That’s how America pays for things. Not one penny our our federal tax dollars pay for nothing at all. That last sentence is why he can’t tell the truth outright. Cause of the ignorance of the masses

I put in a lot of effort to develop an informed opinion. While I admit that I dislike Trump, I am not committed to either party or any candidate, so what I want is the actual truth and a realistic understanding of why the perception of certain aspects of politics are the way they are. When I hear something "shocking" like what G Soap is trying to say, I always do at least a tiny bit of research to see what the reality is. As Johnny Garza explains, it doesn't really take too much intelligence to understand why "(Sanders) doesn't know how much it will cost." Yet, the article Soap linked reads like a misinformed Twitter post by someone that would never actually *listen* to anything the other "team" said (because this caricature of a person only thinks about whether or not their team is winning). Please, if you're reading this, do yourself a favor and always read more than just one article saying what you want to hear. Don't end up like G Soap.

@No Akomplice Why did you say "gentile" like that are you insinuating something? Jeff Bezos only spent 1.2% of his income on taxes your average small business owner has to pay 40% and hes the type of guy you don't want to burden with our problems? These mega rich people spend almost nothing on taxes. The income inequality we have here is the same level as in fucking afghanistan. If you didn't count the richest 0.1% of people in this country we are not even a wealthy country, rich people just live here because they can weasel out of paying their taxes. And where did Bernie say he wouldn't be taxed the same as everyone else? You think he's doing this to get healthcare for (Poor) Americans as like a greedy thing? that makes no fucking sense. It's not free, it's free for the poor. The money comes from the people who are not poor how do you not understand the concept of taxes?

@No Akomplice Some people have "too much" because they ripped us off. For example Amazon has always made great efforts to bust unions. 6:10 Sanders is asked THE question: "Is there an increase blah blah ...?" His first move, what I call a mutterance, (missed by Nerdwriter) is: "Good." He FIRST affirms Colbert thus displaying a complete lack of fear of the question. An audience reads your fear or courage. What you do FIRST is what matter most. If you flinch, you suck, if you lock eyes and grin, you win. Sanders AFFIRMS the question with "good," thus completely DISARMING Colbert. Everything else is filler as long as he does not stumble. Nerdwriter does well with the follow through, but it is the setup that opens the listener to accepting it.

@@carolyntalbot947 It's a stupid question because while the sound-bite answer is "yes", the contextual answer is "you'll save a ton of money". I suspect Colbert asked that question that way intentionally, to provide an opportunity for Sanders to provide that context, and deconstruct the poor framing. especially when you're Bernie Sanders and the entire media is owned by mega-rich people who have a very big financial interest in a self-proclaimed democratic socialist not becoming president. There's a reason none of the supposedly 'left-wing' media outlets are challenging the narrative that he's a Stalinist, or that he hates Jews (despite being a Jew), or that Batista's govt in Cuba was better than the communist govt.... Hell, they're helping propagate those narratives. He is free to pay more in taxes voluntarily, donate to charity, etc. He doesn't. Which, when combined with the awful ideas he espouses, leads me as far away from him as possible. Trump supporters can point to Trump's economy; with record low unemployment and significant wage increases due to tax reforms. They can point to the fact that he donates his presidential salary to charity. Not that these things are the end all, just that they are more substance than Bernie brings to the table. I wonder how much of Bernie's rhetorical style comes from the fact he's a New York Jew. Because he does very much does still have their accent. The vaguely yelling thing he's always doing? That's just how Jews speak when they're impassioned about something. He sounds very similar to my primary care doctor, another old New York Jew. The fact is that if you grow up Jewish, you naturally end up learning a certain amount of rhetoric. Arguing and questioning is kind of our thing. I've talked with my friends about how Bernie's Jewish-ness influences his politics (something I'll expand on if there's interest), but since I come from a west coast reform synagogue, I'm not really qualified to talk specifically about the New York Jew cultural aspect of it. Two things you didn't mention that I've noticed myself, is that at first it looks like that Bernie is doing the typical "politician dance around the question thing", but he's doing it in an ethical way. He jumps away from the question and illustrates context, keeping so he doesn't create exploitable soundbites (such as "yes, but"), and does eventually come back to the question, saying 'the common people will save money and taxes will only increase on the wealthy'. Also the hands. I think they're as important to creating his rhythm as his word choice. He also uses them to visually demonstrate his point, swiping to one side whenever he says "gone" in your example. and miming "signing up" at the end.

We are already paying twice-to four-times as much for healthcare with worse outcomes. Even the worst result imaginable where somehow it doesn't save money (again, unlikely seeing as insurance companies wouldn't collect massive profits) STILL is better because a progressive tax, cap on drug prices, and no copayments or deductibles means that working people who (unlike the rich) get punished for people sick, or go bankrupt because of medical bills wont anymore. It's not a hard question. A child getting sick- especially something serious like cancer- should not ALSO put the livelihood of a whole family in danger, or cost drugs that the family just can't afford. He leaves a $300 billion/yr just in that alone, and then merely brushes all that off by saying we'll tax people to pay for it all. By comparison, total annual federal revenue is just slightly less than that figure. He'd need to DOUBLE tax income to do it. Hello dear Nerdwriter, I really love and enjoy watching your videos and listening to your explanations, but I find it a bit harder to understand you completely and comprehensively in the first attempt, because English is not my mother tongue; among other things I follow you because I take your essays for practice purposes to improve my English - then I learn something during procastination. :-D I would like to ask you to implement subtitles to make it a little easier for me to follow you and understand your content more effectively and correctly. Automatically generated subtitles would actually be enough for me and help me enormously. But of course I would also understand if these circumstances, compared to my individual case, would be rather idle to implement - I don't even expect an explanation or anything like that, should you not be able or willing to comply with my request. Best regards, Pat

I would love to see an analysis like this on Warren's rhetoric when she is going after somebody like how she did with Bloomberg during that first debate vs. her rhetoric when she is asked about her different plans. I think there is an interesting dichotomy and why she goes through ebbs and flows of support.

All my issues with Warren: Bad Foreign Policy: - voted for Iraq war - voted in favor of Trump's bloated military budget - Israel - Supported sanctions (Iran, Russia, North Korea, Venezuela) - lied to Penn Uni and Harvard about being indian (despite being somewhere between 0.1% and 3% Native American, less than most European descended Americans) - lied about father's job as janitor Warren’s brother told the Boston Globe, “My dad was never a janitor," and he said it makes him “furious” that Warren has repeatedly claimed otherwise on the campaign trail. - lied about being fired for being pregnant - lied about Bernie being a sexist (video of him telling elementary school kids that women can and should be president) (equal rights amendment) (was a longtime friend of warrens) - lied about son going to public school "No, my children went to public schools." her son Alex, went to two different private schools, Kirby Hall and Haverford School. she plagiarized recipes in her cookbook, which she called PowWowChow - lied when she promised to serve her full Senate term if reelected in 2018. Her 2020 presidential run began a few weeks after she won that election. - lied about not taking Super Pac money "While voting for the bill had won senators the gratitude of lobbyists who write campaign checks, “that door swings both ways,” Warren went on. “Those who wanted to snuzzle with the lobbyists leave themselves vulnerable to counterattacks.”" politico march 2012 Warren defenders point to Trump's record of lying: ""Whataboutism" is not an actual argument. Surely Democrats must hold their own to higher standards if they're going to make Trump's dishonesty a central issue with any credibility at all." Flip-flopping especially on healthcare: Warren in 2005, this clearly aligns more with Bernie's M4A than Warren's current platform "We have a broken health care finance system in the United States, and all I can do is point out that it is bankrupting families." "It is literally correct that the costs of a broken health care system are borne throughout the economy." "Until we fix the broken health care finance system, those families have to turn somewhere and that means now they turn as a last-ditch effort to the bankruptcy courts." In 2020, liz’s daughter is on the board of a United Health Group a health insurance agency lobbyist group. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amelia_Warren_Tyagi Warren worked defending Travelers in a Supreme Court case involving a mining company that set up a trust fund for asbestos victims. Warren, a bankruptcy expert, argued that the insurance company should be protected from future lawsuits from victims because such suits would prevent similar trusts from being created, making it impossible for all victims to be paid. This case drew scrutiny. Time Magazine article "Elizabeth Warren and Suze Orman call for student debt reform" yet Suze Orman, Warren's friend worked for the University of Arizona despite trying to lie about it on stage during a q and a while sitting next to Warren. Orman also scammed countless middle-class Americans with her fraudulent credit card. She was a friend of scam artist Suze Orman, victims reached out to warren to help when she ran the Consumer Protection Bureau and she did nothing. Stated in 2012 political ad, "There’s been no real accountability for the people who broke our economy." yet she herself never held Orman accountable when working for the Consumer Protection Bureau. Why was she so supportive of a woman who made the middle class suffer, both students seeking university education and victims of the credit card scam? The CPB was riddled with issues, the hill did a good article on it. awpc.cattcenter.iastate.edu/2017/03/10/accountability-aug-20-2012/ "One Democratic donor who is active on Israel policy and considers himself a liberal Zionist had long admired Warren when he finally spoke with her in 2011. He came away from the conversation thinking “she would have to be careful on her Middle East politics.” The donor doesn’t recall Warren saying anything he would disagree with substantively, but the phrasing seemed inartful. “You don’t want people to have an excuse to go after you,” says the donor. Clinton’s infamous “3 a.m.” ads would write themselves." [if she were to have run against Hillary in 2016) “She had no interest in compromise,” said Rubin, the former House Republican staffer who later lobbied in support of the bill. “She had no interest in trying to make the bill better. She just wanted to kill it.” Warren, who didn’t respond to an interview request for this article, waged war against the bill with the same uncompromising approach she brought to the Senate and on which she is running for the White House. She fought for what she believed in, and she lost. Warren had been recruited to serve as an adviser to a commission whose members were appointed by Bill Clinton, Congress and Supreme Court Chief Justice William Rehnquist that studied the country’s bankruptcy laws. A progressive wouldn't have been recruited. In May 2012, Warren Reported Earning $93,775 In Salary From Harvard University For 2011 And To Date In 2012. Elizabeth Warren made $429,981 in salary from Harvard during 2010 and 2011 teaching one class on empirical analysis during the 2010 spring semester and one class on contracts during the fall 2011 semester and got nearly $134,000 in consulting fees on legal cases in 2010. Was a republican until age 47. Friends and colleagues talking about her strong conservative views. Even her childhood friend. She doesn't care about progressive agendas only herself. Warren did not endorse anyone during the 2008 Democratic primary, and was lobbying candidates behind the scenes to create what would become the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She didn't endorse Bernie in 2016. Warren did [2013] sign a letter circulated by her colleague, Barbara Boxer of California, encouraging Clinton to run for president in 2016. This was even after Hillary betrayed her in 2001 on a bankruptcy bill. Warren never forgot the betrayal, invoking it as recently as her 2012 campaign. She met privately with Biden in 2016 and multiple times with Hillary during her campaign. archive.org/details/perma_cc_HXW9-AR67 www.washingtonexaminer.com/opinion/editorials/elizabeth-warrens-lies-are-a-pattern reason.com/video/watch-elizabeth-warren-lie-about-her-sons-private-school-education/ www.bostonherald.com/2020/01/16/another-day-another-lie-from-elizabeth-warren/ www.politifact.com/factchecks/2019/sep/18/blog-posting/did-elizabeth-warren-get-400000-teaching-one-class/ www.nrsc.org/press-releases/two-overpaid-professors-address-college-affordability-2016-10-07/ www.masslive.com/politics/2012/01/elizabeth_warren_got_nearly_43.html plus more, everything here can be found in reputable online sources.
