The reported size claims of crocodiles reaching up to 23 feet in Bhitarkanika National Park have been stated by some park officials based on a decade of observations and it has gotten recognition from the Guinness Book of World Records. However, it is important to exercise caution in accepting these measurements due to the challenge of accurately measuring these large crocodiles. While the habitat in Bhitarkanika National Park appears to be the right environment for very large crocodiles, conclusive evidence supporting the reported sizes is currently lacking. So, more research and careful consideration are important before we can fully accept the crocodile sizes in the park.

@@wildworld6264 since there is not a single skull that indicates a croc reaching 7 meters ever (not even from the times of trophy hunting when size was everything that mattered) and the second biggest skull is a lot smaller than the biggest (3 cm difference in skull lentgh means a 27 cm smaller croc) I would say the 6,8 meter croc was an incredible outlier that maybe happens once a century even in large populations. Or it just had a bigger skull than usual and didn't reach the estimated size. I would place the absolute maximum at 6,5 meters. Remember: With every meter in length the weight roughly doubles. A 5 Meter croc would weigh around 500 Kilo, a 6 meter croc around 1000 and a 7 Meter croc around 2000. We tend to think "just a meter more or less, why not?" but in terms of overall size it makes an enourmous difference. See it this way: If a 1000 Kilo croc is gigantic - what would be the odds (or the physical possibility) of a 2000 Kilo croc? Are the bones and joints even able to theoretically support that amount of weight?

I once came across a croc up in far north Queensland that was at least 60 feet... it kept telling me to throw coins in the river. I asked him how much he needed, and he said "I need about tree fiddy." That's when I realised it wasn't no crocodile, it was that God damned Loch Ness Monster.

I like that little experiment you did with the picture. It's very hard to get an accurate size of an animal by just eyeing it. And people tend to over estimate to try to get that viral moment or have a good story to tell. I'd say a max size around 23 feet is well within reason. Not sure about those 30 footers. Also thanks for the shout my friend, I appreciate it!. Great video as always.

Size estimates of people who see a large crocodilian are nearly always overestimates. Of the many nuisance alligator calls that I handled as a nuisance alligator hunter in Louisiana, there was one, and ONLY one time where an alligator was underestimated by a complainant, and oddly enough, it was on his back porch. When I got there, I asked him how big it was, and said "about four feet", so instead of grabbing my rifle, I grabbed my control pole. He was holding a rifle when I drove up. Bizarrely enough, as we walked around his house toward the back in the pitch black darkness, I asked him if his rifle was a .22 in case I needed to shoot the alligator, and that way I wouldn't need to walk back to the truck. It was in a big subdivision in Baton Rouge, and I didnt want to have to deal with the outfall of a loud shot. He tells me "It's a BB gun". I looked at it when he put the flashlight beam on it, and I'll be damned if it wasnt a kids daisy BB gun from about 1970. No $hit. Anyway, as we rounded the corner of his house and turned inward toward the patio, I heard the thing hiss and patio furniture started to fly. Let's just say it was not 4". It wasn't really big, but the hide was 8'-5", which is a decent sized one. Other than that, EVERY other estimate I was ever given overestimated the size. Personally, I could see the potential for a saltwater croc to maybe approach 23', but that's a stretch and the odds of us seeing a verified kill anywhere over 21 feet would be extremely, EXTREMELY unlikely, and I would put the extreme outside length at 23' as being POSSIBLE. Thirty feet? Nowhere near that.. People have no idea how big a 20' crocodile really is. Feet the size of very big dinner platters and then some. It's hard to imagine. I want to say that Lolong was the croc from the Philippines suspected of killing the little girl who was in a canoe or something similar with her cousin on their way to a floating school in a lake, and the croc flipped it when one of them accidentally touched it with the paddle. There were conflicting media accounts, but it seems that the croc decapitated the little giirl and her headless body was found floating later. Decapitation is not at all unusual, but generally it occurs when the animal pops the body like a whip to tear off consumable portions, and they'll find the head occasionally slammed down into mud. My guess is that in this instance, he simply grabbed her by the head and pulled/bit it off and likely consumed it or it was simply lost. Hard to say. That he didn't eat the body is odd and tends to suggest it may not have been predatory in nature. They'll jam a body of a large kill under logs or debris and "guard" it from nearby or simply drag it around until they consume it. It may have something to do with decomposition allowing for easy separation of body parts, I don't know.

I live in Fl. When I am with someone and we see an 8’ gator near the trail, they think it is really big and it is. I have seen a couple of really big gators and 12’ is close to the max (14’ seems to be just about the record). An 18’ croc would look like Godzilla. In this article, verified 20’+ seems to be hard to find. 23’ max would seem to be a pretty safe bet.

To put things in perspective, the biggest croc ever verified seems to be around 23 feet. The biggest human measured is 8’11 (John Rogan was 8’9” so reasonably close). If there was an actual crocodile out their measuring 30 feet, that would be the equivalent to a human measuring 11’6” that we haven’t found yet. Putting it that way, much less realistic.

Whilst that's a good way of looking at it, comparing a primate mammal to a prehistoric reptile probably isn't the best like for like comparison. Especially when crocodiles may vary not just on genetics, but environmental conditions like how much sunshine light/warmth they recieve. As crocodiles are cold blooded, I'd assume a more colder or shaded or weather pattern would hamper growth like snakes. A bad draught or overhunting may kill off bigger specimens. How much or little abundance of prey would also likely affect growth rates. Of course humans in the first world have seemed to have reached a upper limit, sharing none of these same issues. Many crocodiles like tortoises, can live a very long time, nearly indefinitely. The growth rate gradually decreases, but growth can continue throughout the life of the crocodile, whether seventy years or more. So I guess the best way to measure potential to see what happens with zoos in half a century, providing crocodiles with prime conditions.

@@skycloud4802 it's well established by now though that crocodiles have definite lifespan limits, even in ideal conditions. As they approach the end of their lives, their teeth cease to be replaced, so that the very oldest are often nearly toothless. They can still hunt thanks to the sheer crushing force of their jaws, but they still die of old age some years after reaching this state.

they were nearly hunted to extinction in australia until it was banned in the 70's it's only now that we are seeing 20' crocs again in numbers. the number of large crocs will continue to rise until they reach a natural plateau. the big crocs of today were small crocs in the 70's. with people no longer hunting crocs or just killing large crocs out of fear they probably have the best chance in centuries to reach maximum size.

I've seen 10 to 15 foot crocs in the wild and in zoos, and I think people kind of forget just how massive that is. A 20 foot crocodile would be absolutely monstrous. They're still out there as well, probably in very small numbers and far away from people, but 20 foot is certainly not out of the question, even today. The 32 footer Montgomery mentions I call bullshit on though. I can't feasibly see how a croc could live long enough in the wild to even approach that length. 22-25 feet I can maybe see.

Well Montgomery’s story was definitely taken very seriously at the time for one he was supposedly a very trustworthy guy and it was at a time when 30 feet was considered maximum size as there are several 28-30 footers reported from those times 27 footer Luzon, Philippines 30 footer Bay of Bengal 30 footer mossman river 30 footer pioneer river 33 footer Russel river 28 footer Annie river 30 footer cape York peninsula None of these measurements were taken by biologists or any authority figures but by the hunters, all from late 1800s early 1900s, it’s a shame we don’t have concrete proof because it would be awesome to know they did reach these sizes, but 20 foot is still huge and we do know they occasionally get that big.

Just out of curiosity, I kinda wonder how big somebody could potentially breed a saltie if say, they were handed a massive crocodile farm, practically unlimited resources and time, and access to the current biggest crocs in captivity with the sole mission of breeding the biggest croc possible? Could selective breeding hypothetically allow somebody to make the mythical big 30-footer over many decades of constantly breeding the biggest crocs over and over again? Or would 30 feet just be stupidly impossible to ever attain even under the most ludicrously favorable conditions for it?

Would a crocodile in captivity grow slower than a wild crocodile? In the wild, they would be getting much more exercise and potentially eating more. An animal in a zoo would have a sedentary life and not be overfed. Animals living in very hot areas may also have a higher metabolism and could grow quicker and eat more?

no, Orcas are extremly picky with their food choices. They don't attack random animals they aren't used to hunt. A saltie could clash with a shark on rare occasions. The outcome is likely determined by the size of the animals. Would guess the shark has an advantage because it's more agile and aware in deep water. The nile croc is a freshwater croc.

Gustave likely died of old age, as sightings of him simply ceased quite a few years ago. Don't know where the idea came from that he was killed and measured. Much about him is also likely myth, including his supposed kill count. Due to his infamy, missing people would often be said to have been killed by him (after all it's not like most crocodile attacks have witnesses, let alone witnesses capable of identifying which crocodile did it), regardless of whether there was evidence they had even been killed by a crocodile at all (as opposed to drowning in any number of accidents).

Do crocs get bigger in captivity if they have plenty of room and food? I've seen crocs from a bridge over the Tarcoles river in Costa Rica. They hang out straight down and people stop to walk on the bridge and see them. They might be "only" 15 or maybe 17' but they look massive when you see them in person. I grew up in Florida and gators were always common in the ponds and lakes we fished in before I grew up and switched to saltwater. A 10' alligator is definitely large and needs to be respected but those crocs are on another level. The same species lives in south Florida but I think they're bigger in Costa Rica. There's another species of croc in Cuba that is worth checking out and maybe a video.

Also some very cool and intriguing crocodile facts, that are not really know about regarding another much rarer species the Cuban crocodile. on the topic of the Cuban crocodile, Fascinatingly Cuban crocodiles are actually terrestrial adept carnivores and were living in fully terrestrial ecosystems in the past on the Bahamas, and Dominican Republic, and were also found even in the Cayman Islands as well and used to hunt ground sloths and hunt in packs. Regarding the terrestrial nature of the Cuban crocodile, a paper studying the bones of Cuban crocodiles from the blue holes in the Bahamas, looked at the stable isotopes found in the bones of these Cuban crocodile fossils, and they found that Cuban crocodiles were living in a terrestrial food web rather than aquatic. The paper is called “domination by reptiles in a terrestrial food web of the Bahamas prior to human occupation.” Also in another paper called. “The Cuban Crocodile (Crocodylus rhombifer) from Late Quaternary Underwater Cave Deposits in the Dominican Republic“ They have many adaptations namely there tall deep broad skull long recurved compressed teeth, crooked bite margins, heavily keeled limbs and many osteoderms, shorter rounder tail, long very powerful legs and arms. And are capable of preforming a rotary and transverse gallop! The ones at the guama crocodile farm have the most important genetics, having the most terrestrial features, and more expressed features, and the ones at the guama croc farm have Insane squamosal horns, looking very much like a living voay robustus. Cuban crocodiles are the closest modern analogy to quinkana, and other terrestrial mekosuchines, sebecids, and Planocraniids. Also the best way to conserve the Cuban crocodile would be to selectively breed the ones for the guama croc farm which have the most genetic diversity and terrestrial genes having the longest limb proportions, agility, speed, and morphological features. And Eventually starting a rewilding reintroduction plan into terrestrial landscapes they once’s inhabited like the Bahamas, but they would first need to reintroduced the other key stone species like Hutia rodents, rock iguanas, red footed and yellow footed tortoises, flightless rails, and so forth. There has actually been talks, plans of reintroducing Cuban crocodiles back into terrestrial landscapes of the Bahamas it was in an article called “rewilding reptiles to eco engineer the anthropocene.” Also Cuban crocodiles from the guama crocodile farm stock would also be a good taxon substitute for the terrestrial ziphodont land crocodile quinkana of Australia. On a final note they found another new ziphodont land crocodile in Australia Pleistocene age, related to quinkana but with a well preserved skull and is yet to be published, the preview paper is called “A new ziphodont eusuchian from the Pleistocene of Queensland, and implications for Australasia's ziphodont crocodylian diversity” also I’ve heard of a cryptid crocodile reported from Brazil and Guyana and is called urufere which isa possible surviving sebecid land croc, the name is from The native Waiwai Indians which call it "Urufere" The Urufere also makes a loud booming sound, like a cannon, to paralyze its prey. It is usually seen during the day, not the night. It is said to have large teeth and very vibrant colors somewhat like a jaguar. Also wanted to clarify other crocodile species can perform a rotary gallop and transverse gallop, and can canter as well. Also thanks again for making this video! Very informative, also it’s interesting how territorial saltwater crocodiles are, and Cubans Also being very territorial as well. Also I have heard saltwater crocodiles in certain parts of there range will hybridize with Siamese crocodile, and occasionally other crocodylus species, but also hybridization is reported a lot in captivity, yai is a giant hybrid Siamese saltwater crocodile, quite intriguing. Also very fascinating how saltwater adapt the saltwater croc is, hence the name. I’ve also heard of giant sea dwelling crocs distinct from the salty, a cryptid croc of sorts.

Steve Irwin saw many 1000's and was prepared to say they could get to 18 feet. So, maybe around 20 feet is possible. Who cares? Does anyone remember the name of the tallest man on record?

Phenomenal video on giant crocodiles! Awesome to see one about this, 23 foot is certainly a possibility perhaps, but has yet to be confirmed and substantiated with concrete evidence. Though interestingly I have heard of other large croc reports from the Congo region, possibly a undocumented new species, a lot of unknown cryptid crocs from that region of Africa and in other localities like Liberia in west Africa. Also wonder how large a hybrid crocodile of a saltwater crocodile and Nile crocodile could get? And from the largest reported specimens in the population. Would be quite the colossal giant !

German naturalist Hans Besser supposedly shot a 25 foot Nile croc in Tanzania in 1905. It was missing three feet of its tail, probably bitten off my another croc when it was young. It's total length would have been 28 feet. Both Besser and Ron Powloski were respected naturalists with no reason to lie.

I suspect that the size of outliers varies by animal type. People talk about Andre the Giant and Shaq when arguing that the croc outliers should be more than 23'. But comparing Mammals to reptiles is likely equivalent to comparing apples to oranges. Are anacondas better comparison to crocs? If so, the truth may be almost as impressive with crocs. For decades, we put the largest anacondas at 26'. But then, while working on the construction of a dam in Brazil, workers encountered a 33' specimen. Whether by accident, or intentionally, the snake was killed, but it's body was measured and weighed. If we apply this ratio of 'biggest known to giant outlier' ... we would add 5.38 feet to the largest known croc, and get a length of about 25' 8" for the largest croc out there.

Watching the (Discovery Channel?) documentary on the capture of Lolong... I would say he was AT LEAST 30ft. just based on the photos of him bound to the logs with several humans on his back to try to keep him down. And not just his length but his girth definitely gave "this is a dinosaur" vibes. He seemed scary big!
