I hope, people know, that the Ioniq frunk is small, because of the longer wheelbase, it's logical to have that extra space inside where we sit, than in the frunk, where we don't sit 😄

That makes sense I'd rather have the space inside the cabin for sure :) the frunk its useful for holding the granny cable and the type 2 cable which is enough for me.

The photos are deceptive, making the car look smaller than it really is. I think that’s a great design trick. The Kia EV6 manages a similar trick. The width of the car in the metal is the biggest surprise to me.

The size is an issue for me and the space in my garage. My hope is that Hyundai will replace the Kona EV with a smaller version of the Ionic 5 (Ionic 3?) in hatchback style but with all the features of the 5. At that point I would be really interested. Same with the Skoda, I need to go down in size one notch.
@LemonTeaLeaf
@LemonTeaLeaf 2 жыл бұрын
an IONIQ 3 would be closer to the kona in size i suspect. The IONIQ 5 wouldnt' fix in my garage if i still had it (converted into a room) as the Nissan leaf when the mirrors folded in would barely fit in. UK garages are way to small, that is why most are just filled with junk or converted.

Really interesting to see it against familiar cars. I’ve seen a few out on the road now and it’s a deceptively large design that disguises it’s size so well! I would really appreciate you do more efficiency testing. It seems that this car is very inefficient at high speeds.. Say 65 mph and higher. I know you did one, but would like a long term efficiency test over 500 plus miles...Most of the speed limits here in the states is 65 or 70 and I am worried it would never meet the so called epa range since I do so much highway driving.
@5DollarHoller
@5DollarHoller 3 жыл бұрын
FYI I was worried about this too and still am, but a Redditor remarked that he gets 400 km of range on his going about 120 KPH. Take that with a grain of salt but one thing to note is that all of these reviewers are getting the AWD version of the Ioniq 5. My hypothesis is that the AWD version gets really inefficient at higher speeds - almost as if it can't switch to RWD in Eco mode - but the RWD-only might be more normal. Worth testing.
@PhotoJohn80
@PhotoJohn80 3 жыл бұрын
@@5DollarHoller that would be good if true. I think that’s like 75 mph and about 250 miles? If that’s the awd model I think that’s acceptable. Thanks for the info

I'll be doing some test in different mode from 60-70mph next month. I suspect 75mph @250 miles might be a stretch.
@5DollarHoller
@5DollarHoller 3 жыл бұрын
@@PhotoJohn80 Yeah I mean it's definitely "forum wisdom" so who knows if this person was accurate or not. 75mph @ 250 miles on the RWD version is this person's claim. All of Hyundai's marketing materials suggest they want to approach 300 mile range on the RWD version, so if Hyundai is accurate, this is likely perfect conditions at 55 MPH, which means losing 50 miles of range for an extra 20 MPH of speed sounds aggressive but potentially reasonable. But I totally agree, the "real world" tests so far have been concerning. Another consideration is that the USA battery is 7% larger than the maximum in other markets, right? 77.4 in the USA, 72.6 in other markets. Small but potentially significant, maybe another 15 miles or so out of a charge.
@enyaq_gorm
@enyaq_gorm 2 жыл бұрын
John while you wait for James to do that have a look at my channel where I have a video showing the test we did on the drive back from collecting his car. It was quite a surprise comparing my smaller battery car with his but as James says the fast charging speed balances out any lack of efficiency.
@au18ert
@au18ert 3 жыл бұрын
I've decided to get the ultimate with everything bar the dual motor. Do you know if the car can be jacked up James? As my plan is to put some 18s on with a decent all season tyre when the temperature drops below 7 degrees. Keep the 20s for the summer and have better access under the arches for the winter. I don't know why everyone is so surprised by the range or lack of it as big wheels kill efficiency.
@LemonTeaLeaf
@LemonTeaLeaf 3 жыл бұрын
Dual motor is good for winter but not great on efficiency. Should beable to jack the car it should have some key jack points I'm sure, I'll need to look it up see if i can see anything in the manual. Dual motor, large car and big wheels does kill effiency for sure
@au18ert
@au18ert 2 жыл бұрын
@@LemonTeaLeaf I totally agree dual motor is great but has limited use in the real world. I've been driving for 30 years and not needed 4 wheel drive and living in the south west winters are mild. If you follow tyre reviews he will tell you that it mostly comes down to tyres. Summer tyres are rubbish below 7 degrees so my thinking is to drop down the wheel size and put decent rubber on. The Project 45 had it all for the price of the stop spec real wheel drive so seems like a good deal but I just don't think it's worth 4k extra. I'm also not keen on the solar roof I'd rather have PV on my house and moon roof on the car or whatever they are calling it. Only time will tell if you agree. I really like your choice of colour, until your video came out I was very much no to the Teal Green. I don't know if you are following Marky Mark reviews but he has the matte finish and really interested to see how it holds up after a ceramic coat. My advice be a hobbyist detail is to have at least a ceramic coat if you intend to keep the car long term as it will serve the paintwork well.. Keep up the drone shots ✌️

It's one thing to park cars like the Ionic 5 in standard sized bays with nothing else around. However, for all it's impressive technology, I wonder how it would cope at a busy supermarket, recycling centre, school run, retail park, corner shop, leisure centre, or some other busy public place where there's little parking or manoeuvring room, and at the same time lots of vehicle and pedestrian activity all around. At my regular supermarket, some drivers in oversized 'expensive' cars alway seem to 'steal' the large parking bays reserved.for family and disabled parking, and usually with no children or 'disabled' badge in sight.

@@LemonTeaLeaf That's always a good idea and I often do the same with my Hyundai Tucson. Why do you compare the Ionic 5 to all the smaller cars and not to cars which are bigger. You compared it to the Tesla Model 3 which is a sedan and ignored the Model Y which is the comparable car. The Model Y has more interior space. The boot 70% greater volume. The better question is the Tesla worth $10,000 more or $17,500 after tax credits in the US. I think the Ionic 5 will gain a respectable market share based on the truth. You don't need to cherry pick the data to sell it.
@enyaq_gorm

Jim Shafer the Model Y is not available here so how do you suggest he film a car that is not available and which we have no scheduled release date for? The Model 3 is a bigger car in terms of length so it's a very reasonable thing to compare with, they are direct competitors after all.

When I first saw this car online, I thought it was the best looking car I'd seen in a long time (in silver). It just looked so different (although different isn't always good - remember the Fiat Multipla?) I loved its retro-futuristic design. When I saw one IRL, the size completely ruined it for me. I assumed it was a hatchback. If it was, it would be the best looking hatchback on the market imo.
