Its mental, I read Krieg recently, and whilst it isn't a bad book, the numbers make no sense. It talks about 2-3000 guardsmen laying siege to a hive city infested with orks. Current modern estimates are that to take a large village/small town, even if lightly defended would take 1000 soldiers due to how complex an environment it. Hive cities are meant to be colossal, spanning many miles both up and long. every time I read a number of guardsmen I added 2 0's to the end for my own headcannon lol.

The reason why Fabius Bile managed to create Fulgrim's perfect clone is because he used his Primarch soul, floating in the warp after his ascension into Daemon Prince. The corruption entirely stripped them of their immortal souls, replaced with pure warp energy, they aren't coming back.

SOB numbers are also skewed by their detachments and active to "reserve" ratios. For instance a convent attached to a shrine or cathedral could be 50/50 SOB guard detachment and non militant Sororitas, while a order militant convent will be closer to 95/5 active/non-militant. Additionally, every Imperial Cult shrine worth destroying willl have a minimum SOB squad guarding it at a minimum. A while back I started trying to calculate SOB numbers starting with shrine guard detachments. I hit 150 million and gave up.

Shit the amount of troops available are akin to having a shit ton of pennies in a bag and using it as a weapon or giant projectiles vs a group of crackheads and the supersoliders are equivalent to Gold bricks in Socks with metal spikes on them

The thing with guardsmen varies from world to world. Gaunt’s ghost were literally ex criminals, actual criminals, former PDF troopers, and even hunters, in Catachan Devils novel, thr main protagonist was an administratum clerk that got only 4 months of Training before going to his first combat action, same was in novel 15 hours that started the meme that guardsmen only last 15 hours on battlefield, not to mention Necromunda uses literal gangsters feom Spider clan who they give guns to keep order in lower levels and send them to Space. Dont get me wrong there are many highly trained elite guardmen regiment. But saying that all guardsmen are the best of the best is a little bit of a streach. And that’s not even mentioning penal legions.
@mcarrowtime7095 Жыл бұрын
Penal legions are fodder used to complete high attrition tasks, and the criminals and gangsters tend to be the most violent and successful, as the IG will execute a planetary governor if they believe the supplied regiment to be of too low quality.

This is why I always image that SM Chapters must be constantly followed around by millions of normal soldiers, and those soldiers actually do most of the work. The Astartes will do the special forces stuff and then take all the credit, whilst the real grunt work was done by ordinary humans.

This somewhat, but remember the tabletop needs some balance, the lore seems to imply a few thousand marines could probably make world comply by brute force due to unnaturally jacked up they really are, plus the ceremite

there is DEFINATELY over 1000 marines per chapter, AT LEAST high tens of thousands

On the Guard, there is also the fact that a lot of the gaurd regiments used Cadian tech because cadia could pump out trillions of helmets a day, and any planet that bought from them would also get Cadian Mercs and Commisars from their own commisariat colleges to train them. so quite a bit of gaurd regminets in the galaxy are also just Cadians from another planet. Most of the big name units do this. Kriegs rifles and artilery are sold all over the galaxy, as well as their other equipment. Pretty much any unit that gets its own codex mention sells equipment to other worlds simply because they are known galaxy wide and as such have a realtionship similar to america with out servant's, i mean valued allies. There is also a regiment that only wears leather jackets and switchblades

By the golden throne it almost felt like i lost a few braincells listening to the insane numbers of the imperial army. 500 bilion in a hive world how the fuck is that even possible!!? And some imperial ships has crews that numbers in the millions?? How!? It feels as i am going crazy just thinking about it!
@esportsprodigybuhanil9332 жыл бұрын
"500 bilion in a hive world how the fuck is that even possible!!?" The land area of Asia is around 44580000 km^2. The population density of New York City is around 11000 people per km^2. If the whole Asian continent had the population density of New York City it would have a population of 490 billion.
@MNM-lq9te2 жыл бұрын
@@esportsprodigybuhanil933 you have proved that it is possible. But its just the whole scale that messes my head up. The amount of materials needed, food and water supply needed to sustain 500 billion ppl. And the amount of death when a hive gets attacked or nuked. Like how is it possible to fight an open field battle in a hive when the artwork show them as a circle-spiral city where instead of using land mass to expand they just build higher.

This is why writing sci-fi books for space empires is a nightmare of logistics. An Ecumenopolis, or a world-city like Trantor from the Foundation, would be needed JUST to keep track of everything. 40k lore makes it clear that the Imperium is so bad at keeping track of things that sometimes whole units, armies, or planets fall between the cracks.
@Chrivs2 жыл бұрын
Did Guilliman not say a one point after he return that Space Marines might be a little to low like around 1000 giv or take in each Chapter. And that he wanted to make them a little bigger...? And sometimes with some of the Chapters that got Plot gear and all of that shit. Feel like they can get new Marines really really fast or just have a shit load like in back up... Or are just much bigger and dont tell anybody about it...
@eichler7212 жыл бұрын
Your estimate is not bad but I would say the number of Guardsmen fluctuates between 10-20 Trillion depending on the state of warfare in the Galaxy and the same with PDF forces.
@BrianHall332 жыл бұрын
Wait, about 1000 chapters total? Then why have I seen basically everywhere that Cawl and the I crusade ADDED 1000 new chapters? So at minimum 2000 chapters if 1000 was the original estimate

dear majorkill, if you wish to find out who the most badass legend of the horus heresy astartes is, there is only one way to do it. read first - brotherhood of the storm second - scars third - the path of heaven if targutai yesugei isnt your boy after that then i'll eat my hat. THE most underrated character in the horus heresy bar none. the legitimate OG. even Magnus calls him mighty and says he would had a place by his side. stormseers and weather makers all the way!!!!!!
