What are YOUR next steps? Bulk, cut, or maintain?
@gusjeazer

Cut. But usually my cut turns into a bulk without me noticing lol. Now I have to really do a serious cut and get to 10-15% bodyfat, putting me squarely in your category that needs to lose over 20 lbs of fat. Actually even more than 30 lbs. But I'm not trying to join anything, I watch your videos to just get fit.

If I had unique tips to share on bulking, I would. It simply comes down to consistently eating more calories than you burn Make it a priority to eat, recover, and train hard and you will put on mass

I'm currently 17, enlisted as a 68W, and have been training for three months in preparation for basic training in June. My plan is to train my butt off for Special Forces in the reserves and pursue an 18X contract after completing my 6-year term. At 5'8" and 145 lbs, I have more muscle than fat and recently completed a 13-mile run, a new milestone for the Bataan death march in march.

Don't let the reserves or even the regular army kill your motivation. You're going to have some great mentors and awesome peers, but there's also the turds. Be mindful of who you choose to associate with and befriend and as always keep working on pt and basic soldiering like land nav. I've seen the RA steal many a dudes souls who initially aspired for better things, not allowing that to happen is a conscious decision.

It's rare to fight hand to hand, and even if you do, it'll be probably with melee weapons at least. Training martial arts is cool, but is very high energy, high skill you will need to work hard to even maintain. Training opportunities that might be better spend on other stuff.

It has been found from studies from military installations that higher muscle mass but also a *moderate* amount of fat is highly recommended for soldiers, because of the extreme demands and things like dehydration and the inability to get enough calories in during training and field operations.

My AF STS career taught me endurance was far superior than sheer power, running, balance exercises, calisthenics and weight room, but kids please take this guidance to heart, you will have a life after the military, so stretch, take care of injuries once they happen, maybe a chiropractor if Tri care allows it or prepare to visit the PT every week in your old age.

hey, I've noticed that pretty much everyone preparing for military training (or even any sort of EMS training) does a bodybuilding style of resistance training. a few days ago the idea of doing a powerlifting training style popped into my head and I just had to know what you think of it. the routine i had in mind would have weighted pullups added on due to lack of pulling exercises in most powerlifters routines. thanks in advance!

@McCarthy1776
@McCarthy1776 6 ай бұрын
Bodybuilding would be better than powerlfiting. Bodybuilding will give you anaerobic endurance on top of aerobic endurance. It builds up glycogen in your muscles. Also stores more water in your muscles, which your body can then use when you get dehydrated and you will get dehydrated. You'll have days where you are sweating out water faster than your body can absorb it

Always listen to the coach. But, I’m a former Army Ranger ‘92-96 then I went into Law Enforcement. I know crap has changed dramatically since I was in. For Instance, the Regiment today is far more professional than it was in my day. In addition, the missions they are pulling now, in my day only Delta or ST6 would have performed. However, there is a caveat, they were allowed to treat us RIP’s like absolute animals--which weeded out the weak. Depending on your tape measure, I’d recommend 175 before going to Basic/Boot. Just make sure you can run at least a 7 minute mile for the physical fitness test….which isn’t hard. Get Stu Smith’s 12 weeks to BUD/S and that will work for any SpecOps unit you are going to try out for. While in High School take you math and physical education serious. Also, English Comp so if you have to take the DLAB you’ll do well. Finally, take a foreign language. German and French will benefit you in Europe and Africa. Spanish and Portuguese for Central and South America. If you’re lucky enough to take Russian or Mandarin…take them. Also, find a solid Karate Dojo, (NOT TKD AS TKD HAS BECOME WEAK IN THE USA) boxing, BJJ schools. Don’t worry about belt chasing, get solid self defense. If you can find a Krav Maga Universal School, that’s solid too as they are affiliated with the Israelis.

I have noticed SF guys tend to be bigger. But in the infantry I performed much better with military related things when I was "scrawny" with great cardio. Once I started bulking up and getting really strong I started sucking. About 180 is when I started doing worse on the PT test, ruck marches etc. I could max the PT test when u could only bench 225. When I could bench 400 i literally almost died of heat strokes in JRTC. I never understood why people say being bigger helps with rucking. Maybe you'd have stronger joints and bones, more shock absorption, but large muscles imply more fast twitch fiber tissue. Rucking is an aerobic workout using slow twitch fibers, in other words it's cardio, not resistance training. If you can perform repetitions longer than 2 minutes then it no longer is primarily aerobic. If you can ruck for 3-4-5 hours then why would anyone consider it anaerobic. It's makes not biological sense. Plus in my own personal experience again I rucked much better at 150 than 180, 200, or 240

Gaining weight in isolation will hurt you - I’m in 100% agreement with that My question for you is were you training your endurance with the same focus and effort you were your strength training? If I’m working with someone and they’re regressing in endurance while bulking, that’s a red flag that we need to reevaluate training and/or diet or proceed with caution

Achieve 15% body fat? I'm 4% body fat at 150lbs and I'm 5'6. 15% bf will take a while. I've always been that cross country Marine you mentioned but decided after running 5:15 minute miles and still doing 25 pull ups body weight tests were no issue but I needed to gain more strength for those team events carrying heavy loads long distance. That's what i've been focusing on - hypertrophy, strength and power and speed but putting on body fat is not easy for me. Something else ive added into training is facing my fear of heights. I've heard the Nasty Nick o course tests fear of heights and I don't trust myself when in elevated positions and to combat that ive been going to the rock wall and it's helped build confidence and also great for grip strength. One other thing ive been working on is my character defects and becoming a better person spiritually and more emotionally healthy because I realize selection isn't SF and once on a team, I want to be a guy who brings energy to a room instead of draining it and not be full of selfish ambition but being a good ambassador for Christ. Working on overcoming p*rn is also a way ive worked on being a better me. Also, as Green Berets are the guys who interact with foreign nationals, people skills are important and I'm working on those people skills by working on those character defects of mine.

You are definitely not 4% body fat. The majority of people are around 15% body fat. At 4%, you would be extremely unhealthy. That is like the lowest a pro body builder will get to, and even then, they only get to that level the day of competition and immediately get back to a normal bf%. At 4%, you would be emaciated and miserable, you brain and body would not function well at all

This is misleading. Size does NOT matter. Gurkha Soldiers from Nepal prove that you don't have to be big size to be in special forces. They are tougher and stronger than the American and British Special forces combined and their height is less than 5'4" tall and weigh less than 145 lbs and their endurance are extremely huge.
