When Blackbeard seized the Queen Anne's Revenge, it was almost the perfect pirate ship. It just needed a few explosive upgrades.

@@DreadX10 I've read that pirates would also remove extraneous structures to make the deck more open for combat, and to make the ship faster, though I'm not sure if Blackbeard did that to the Queen Anne's Revenge.

In naval terms a 6 pounder is still merely a pop gun. The lightest 6th rate frigates (Royal Navy) or Corvettes (French) at 20 to 24 guns would have at least 9 pounders on their main deck. I always heard the basic LaConcorde armament when captured was 18 x 9 pounders, which Blackbeard added to, up to 40 guns, with most of the additions being "pop gun" types, 3 or 4 pounders with short barrels, more suited for pirating (disabling rigging, killing crew).Yes, Queen Anne's Revenge was impressive for a pirate ship, as, contrary to most TV shows / movies (Black Sails comes to mind), pirates rarely used full rigged ships, sticking to fast, shallow draft schooners, sloops, brigs. Eventually QAR fell victim to her shortcomings - too big, heavy, deep of draft for the typical marshy uncharted inlets frequented by pirates.

Even tho blackbeard was a beast and imo the 2nd best pirate in history under Bartholomew roberts he wouldn't be a captain I would want to follow if I was alive during the time period pirates terrorized the seas. Blackbeard deliberately ran the Queen Anne's revenge aground. He wanted to basically kill or cut off a large portion of his crewmates because the treasure they collected at the time was not enough to go around as he had to many crewmates. The shift to the smaller sloop was a means of cheating those he left. To bad that didn't work out since admiral mayner outsmarted teach and killed him. Serves him right tho wasn't a caring captain

+Indigo Aura the actual reason that he grounded the queen anns revenge is cause its actualy not a good pirate ship to have while yes its bigger and can easily overcome any merchant ship it would come across pirates loved brigs sloops and schooners because they had shallow drafts and could run away from bigger naval ships like frigates queen anns revenge being of similar size of a frigate couldn't do this so after awhile it became more of a liability than a boon

It's amazing they found as many guns as they did considering the amount of hurricanes that have pummeled the area over the centuries. Big storms stir up lots of sand on the sea floor, many pf those would have been buried, uncovered, and swept along with the storm motion.

Geez, I'm so disappointed with the Smithsonian Channel thus far. They seem to have a penchant for both bullsh*t and exaggeration. There was no need to exaggerate Blackbeard's story - it was already impressive without the need for such ploys. The biggest issue I have with this is how they try to hype the idea of his ships being decked out to 'obliterate' other ships. That was NOT why he designed it the way he did; Blackbeard didn't WANT to destroy other ships, he wanted to frighten them into submission without having to fire a shot. Merchant ships had valuable cargo and would surrender readily enough, and military ships were generally avoided wherever possible. That was kind of the point - it was psychology. He built up his fierce-some reputation because what the mind of a frightened sailor conjures from rumors is much more potent then any reality, and it was that certainty that made his work easier. Blackbeard was known to be intelligent, and for sure he got a real kick out of watching his psychology at work.

Really... only a 6 pound cannon? Most ships at the time would have used anything from 4-24 pounders. 24 and up would be seen on warships, but I’m sure some merchants used 12 pound long or medium cannons. By no means am I saying Blackbeard’s choice of weapons is bad. In fact it might be smart to use lighter cannons so he could out run larger ships of the line and frigates. We will never know.

By standard naval armaments she didn't carry 40. It would literally be impossible for her to be armed with 40 guns. She could have at very, very most (and this is still ridiculous) carry 34 guns. She more than likely carried 24-28 4 - 6 pounder guns.
@daltonturner3113

@@120masterpiece They literally mentioned in the video about finding 32 guns so far, at the time of this video
@120masterpiece
@120masterpiece 3 жыл бұрын
@@daltonturner3113 Yes, I know how many guns they found. They found 17 six pounders, 4 four pounders, 2 two pounders and several swivel guns. Now, you probably don't know what that means. It means if she did carry "40 guns", the rest were probably light swivel guns. What are swivel guns? Swivel guns are very small, portable guns mounted in iron yokes, usually fixed to the the bulwark of a ship. They are the weakest guns on a ship and are generally not included in a ship's armament description because they can be easily removed or added to a ship as needed. If you look up any ship, such as the USS Constitution, they usually don't include swivel guns in their armament. What does that mean when it comes to the QAR? When you compare the statement "she had 40 guns" to how a ship's armament was commonly described during the 18th century it misrepresents how powerful she was. To rate her comparative to other ships of that era she was a ship of about 20 guns, making her as powerful as a 6th rate Man-O-War. To say "she's a ship of 40 guns" would inadvertently make her a 4th rate, which is ridiculous considering the nature of her previous profession. So yes, by standard naval armaments of the time, which didn't include swivel guns, it would be impossible for her to have 40 guns because she didn't have the room to support 40 guns. Ok, I get it, people don't understand this, so I guess I'll just be as plan as possible. She wasn't as powerful as people think she was and any Royal Navy 6th rate ship could have easily defeated her in a battle.

Men of War were, quite simply, naval vessels of 5th rate higher. AC4, though a decent game, continues to mis-classify the ships of the line/capital ships as "men of war". To be realistic, 50+ gun ships were virtually always in Europe, fighting fleet actions as members of the line of battle. Blackbeard would most likely have encounterd a Frigate or a smaller ship-rigged vessel- men of war within their own rights. But, powerful enough to provoke a significant challenge. Men of War were not some great lumbering ships with triple decks, but simply well-armed warships. it's a broad term.

The QAR didn't have 40 guns. By naval armament standards she could have at most carry 34 guns but that would have greatly affected her ability to sail. This 40-44 gun myth came from an article written back then that detailed the taking of the La Concorde. The journalist either didn't understand standard naval armament or simply lied.

@@andreadavidoni5960 All sources, like Wikipedia and modern netflix "documentaries"? Apparently the root of the idea she had 40 guns comes from the testimony of David Herriot. Herriot was Master of the sloop Adventure, taken by Captain Richards, Captain of the pirate sloop Revenge, formerly Royal James (Stede Bonnet's sloop). Herriot testifies that his sloop anchored under the stern of a ship with forty guns mounted, named the Queen Anne's Revenge. Herriot's testimony is recounted in the book "The TRYALS of Major STEDE BONNET, and other PIRATES". This is the most original source I could find besides actual court records of his testimony, but I believe this is sufficient. This is probably the source of the Boston News-Letter article. So we can say that's the root of the idea the QAR had 40 guns. Since the QAR, formerly La Concorde, was a Guineaman and a privateer we have an idea of how large she was and therefore we have an idea of how many guns she could have carried. By the nature of her unfortunate profession she had to be fast and light so ships of her size usually had their hulls pierced for 18 - 24 guns. It's feasible they could have mounted up to 34 guns but that would have severely hinder her ability to sail (she would have been top heavy from all the guns on her quarter deck and focsle) and that would be greatly detrimental to a pirate. The discrepancy between Herriot's testimony and how many guns the QAR carried can be explain because Herriot inadvertently included the number of swivel guns in his count. To elaborate, ships are usually described with the number of guns they carried, for example, the HMS Pandora of 24 guns or the USS Constitution of 44 guns. The Pandora was mounted with 24 great guns but she also carried about 12 half pounder swivel guns. Great guns, typically 4 pounders up to 32 pounders, can not be easily removed from a ship but swivel guns can be since they're small and light, which is why they're generally not included in a ship's armament. That's why the Pandora is called a ship of 24 guns and not 36 guns. Admittedly it seems trivial. Could you technically say the QAR had 40 guns? Maybe. Could you technically say the HMS Pandora had 36 guns? Maybe, but it misrepresents their armaments by standard naval armament descriptions and gives people the impression that the QAR was this formidable and powerful pirate ship. Also they were able to find only 32 guns at the suspected wreck of the QAR, which more than likely includes swivel guns. With the advanced technology they have they probably found all the guns there. It's not feasible that Thatch recovered any great guns from the QAR as they only had two sloops they could use and they would have prioritized their plunder over the guns. And seeing that Thatch abandoned some of his crew on a nearby island tells me room was limited on the sloops. So realistically the QAR probably had about 24 great guns mounts and 12 swivel guns, a far cry from a ship of 40 guns.

"He outgunned any merchantmen that would have been on the waters at that time." REALLY? Aren't we forgetting East and West Indiamen and the Dutch designed Retourschips? That guy is a naval archeologist? These ships were not only much bigger than a Guineaman (Blackbeard's ship) but also boasted two full gun decks of larger guns 8 to 12 pounders and sometimes 16 pounders. Smithsonian, your reputation for scholarship and research continues in its decline. Why the obsession with blackbeard and all of these blackbeard videos? He was a very minor pirate active for less than two years with one of the worst records in terms of loot and prizes taken. He's not even on the same playing field in terms of brutality and atrocity with the truly blood-thirsty pirate captains. He was a small timer only remembered because of Daniel Defoe's writings, a century of bad Hollywood movies/videos like this one, a flashy name and idiots who don't study his REAL pirate contemporaries who by FAR outshine him. Why not some videos on Bartholomew Roberts, Avery or Laurens DeGraaf? Buccaneers Reef dot com

Blackbeard may not have been the most successful pirate of all time, but he did do some incredible things. He had a fleet of several small ships, fended off a powerful British warship, and put a blockade around an entire town. He was remembered not mainly because of his success, (although he was an above average pirate) but because of his daring. And just because of how intimidating he was. He may not have been even close to some of the best pirates like Bart Roberts or Ching Shih, but there is a lot to admire about him. Also he died like a boss.
@modernknightone

His so called "blockade" of Charleston was not really a blockade at all. Any fast or half decently armed ship could have easily bypassed his three ships. It was actually an idiotic stunt. If there had been a warship in harbor he would have been spanked. He also knew one would likely come soon enough - hence the very short duration of the "blockade" in which instead of requesting millions in ransom as in the case of Cassard with Curacao and Surinam or in DeGraaf's sack of Vera Cruz - his only request was medical supplies. Which "powerful British warship" did he fend off? Name please - enlighten me please! He died like a boss. Really? So when he jumped aboard the commandeered merchant sloop sent to find him - after throwing grenades aboard (believing everyone was dead or wounded) and Maynard's trap was sprung with everyone running up from below and surrounding Blackbeard - that was boss? The only cool thing about it was that he broke Maynard's sword. Half a dozen men mobbed him and stabbed him and shot him to death - they practically mutilated him to make sure he didn't get back up. A more boss ending would be a Hollywood style sword fight followed by him successfully holding off the entire ship's crew - didn't happen like that. Defoe's account also embellished the scene a little - something which he actually admitted in order to sell more books.

The blockade wasn't a very good one I agree, but it was a blockade none the less one Teach used to gain necessary medicine for his crew. And the act also boosted his infamy by a very notable margin. You see, Blackbeard's greatest strength was his use of intimidation. He knew the the blockade wasn't strong enough to hold, but he did it anyway because he knew it would get in the enemies heads. And as you probably know, Teach would put fuses in his hat to make him appear as a devil of the sea. Many merchant ships surrendered at the sight of him. You see, he wasn't the strongest pirate out there, but he knew his assets and he knew what would and wouldn't work. He was a great leader. Smart, and tactical. That can't be denied. The warship was known as HMS Scarborough. It was a 32 gun powerful warship most likely with tough broadside armor. He didn't manage to capture the ship, but fending it off was impressive enough. Now even though the Scarborough didn't have a log of this encounter, there are too many sources pointing to that being true. And as for his death, yes he did die like a boss. He may have been outnumbered, but it certainly wasn't a massacre. Blackbeard fought for a noteworthy amount of time before he died. And not going down after just one shot was impressive enough. And if he broke Defoe's sword, then they had to be fighting for at leased 20 to 30 seconds before Teach bit it. Swords, (especially flexing naval cutlasses) are very hard to break. Blackbeard was no Henry Every. But he was certainly an above average pirate and an excellent leader who knew how to use intimidation to his advantage. You really hate Blackbeard do you?
@modernknightone
@modernknightone 7 жыл бұрын
Actually I looked into this HMS Scarborough and experts say it probably never happened and that Captain Johnson (AKA Daniel Defoe) confused it with the HMS Seaford. He didn't break Defoe's sword - Defoe wasn't even there. He broke Lt. Maynard's sword. Maynard recounted the battle to Defoe who wrote down the only known narrative of it. It was a very small encounter with only about 20 to 30 men facing an equally sized complement. Defoe's account was clearly embellished as are many other things in his books. How big was that fish you caught??? Really? 10 feet long you say? Now that's a WHOPPER! I don't hate Blackbeard. I hate Blackbeard's notoriety for the same reason I hate Honey Boo Boo's. I believe it is undeserved because he was not a great leader or great pirate and was actually below average but is only remembered because of Daniel Defoe's writing, a memorable funny name and bad Hollywood movies. I think many great pirate captains of that time were far more terrible and great than blackbeard, but they never had a Daniel Defoe to write down their stories. The ones that we do know about were far greater than Blackbeard, yet everyone still seems to want to mention and talk about blackbeard - this is due to simple laziness IMHO because they don't want to take the time to simply research, study and read about the actual great ones. If they bothered to actually do this I think they would stop with the blackbeard love fest.
