As a non kpop fans, I think BLACKPINK shines the most because of their unique personality and characteristics. I remember one time, I got bored and then their youtube channel popped up in my yt feeds and I clicked it, the first thing that caught my attention is their vlog as a group. What makes them unique from everyone is that they aren't competitive to each other despite having a solo stans.

True, I'm not a kpop fan, too. I've never been impressed with kpop and I still feel the same way, until now.. the only exception is these four ladies of BP. I'm actually trying to get myself into other groups, but I just can't. And that's on point, they don't compete with each other and they treat each other as real sisters. Even their families are treating each of them as their own daughters and siblings. I love their strong bond, and though each of them is imperfect, they make each other complete. They're like a puzzle. Plus, I can totally relate to all their songs. Their music is my jam.

They didn't lose hope and did it for 5-6 years with no complain. They trained 14 HOURS a day. Got their phones for 2 hours every 14 days. They trained 14 days straight. Sundays too. Privilege... my ass. They had no privilege in driving away cockroaches in their small space everyday. Bigbang's success only served enough for them. Their projects. Not all others. Today 90%+ of YGE's profit comes from BLACKPINK. Trainees are living in luxury thanks to them. 2019 broke YGE to the ground for their scandals. They were saved thanks to BP. The growth since then is *400+%.* (This is the current news in the media for how impressive it is) Doing it all in when they were barely or not promoted for most part in their label. Their first teasers came 1.5yrs later. They started from a ZERO subbed channel unlike all idols of today or even before them. And to think they became the WORLD'S #1 from the ground. Yes. They struggled. Yes, they achieved insane records. GGs would be nowhere without them. Women in kpop was never the focus. To think they'd have equal or few records with more achievements than bgs was UNTHINKABLE a decade back.

A lot of people forget how it really was leading up to BP's debut. It was obvious back then that Blackpink was a relatively low priority at YG. Just remember that YG's main focus from 2013 through 2016 was on creating two new boy groups, who were supposed to become bigger and more successful than BigBang. YG spared no expense and even produced more than a year's worth of weekly TV shows, pre-debut, to promote the trainees who would become iKon and Winner. All of YG's artists were brought into the shows. The promotions were non-stop for years, before and after debut. Contrast that to the way that Blackpink was debuted. Virtually nobody even knew who Rose and Lisa were until about a week before debut, when YG released some photos of the Blackpink members. (Jennie and Jisoo were better known than R and L, mostly for appearing in other YG artists' MVs or collabing with other YG artists.) That's right. The pre-debut promotions of Blackpink as a group consisted mainly of releasing photos of the members about a week or two before their actual debut. That's it. (By comparison, the pre-debut promotions for Baemon are easily 100 times more elaborate than anything BP got.) And, right after they debuted with two songs, BP got put back in the basement so that YG could continue focusing more on the two recently debuted boy groups, plus start focusing on another boy group (that became "Treasure"). Also, higher in priority than Blackpink, there was Yang Hyun Suk's focus on creating reality TV shows starring himself, including the "Mix 9" show in which YHS starred as a top producer rescuing struggling trainees from other companies and helping those companies promote those trainees (while BP fans were wondering when BP would have any new songs ever). And shortly after BP's debut, the company also became embroiled in multiple scandals, the worst being the one that BigBang's Seungri was involved in. YG definitely deserves credit for doing a lot of things right. Blackpink House is one example of how YG started doing right by BP with regard to promotions after they debuted. But even that only really worked because of the personalities of the members of BP. I'm not one of those people who think that YG deserves no credit. YG deserves credit for many things. But those people who think that BP members just got automatic success as a result of being at YG need to have their heads examined. I'm quite sure that even YG was surprised by their success and popularity, since YG had gambled and invested most of YG's resources on the three new boy groups, and had the idea that BP was "just a girl group" and deserved lower priority.

This is EXACTLY what I was saying about them. Recently I read a thread complaining that they only got popular because YG heavily promoted them and they weren’t as hard working as other GG groups. But I was saying what makes them successful is THEM. As individuals and their personalities. (Of course talent too) There are only 4 of them so it’s easy to follow, and when they had their BlackPink House or Diaries shows, people got to fall in love with their relatable personalities. I’m a western fan, so it was very easy to connect to them. It’s harder with other GG with 7-9 members. They’ve been called influencers… and yes. They are. And so are other pop stars like Taylor Swift or Selena Gomez. There’s nothing wrong with making brand deals, staying relevant and working.

BP posted a dance practice vid and that's all. Exactly two months later they posted MV from that channel. With no teasers or even posters. They got their first teaser 1.5 yrs later. Let me guess, the fandoms whose favs had vids posted from tens of millions subbed channels are saying this? Expected ofc. BP had a HUGE privilege fr Instead of their seniors giving them a boost, they got themselves in sex and drug scandals and brought the company value lower than small labels Hugee privilege, isn't it? What Blackpink has that other groups do not have is their individual star quality and star power. Like Blackpink is not just known as as group but each member is known individually out of Blackpink. You can easily pinpoint who is Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa. Each girl has their own big fandoms and are really making a mark in almost all aspects from music, acting to fashion. Each girl can stand on their own even without being known as "Blackpink" but as their own individual self. The group has individuality. Ironic because it is that individuality that kind of pulls the group tighter and makes the group bigger instesd of destroying it. It keeps the harmony of the group. Blackpink is not just a group. While the strategy has been spot on, it would go nowhere without excellent songs and wonderfully watchable dance choreography. When I watch most of the other gg, to their songs I say "meh" and to their stage routines I say "meh - low energy". BP songs are unique, upbeat, and I don't care what language they are speaking. I can listen to about 20 of them in an endless loop. Their stage presence is top notch and the dance routines are fun and interesting to watch - always high energy. Trying to copy the perfection of BP might not happen for a long while.

GGs as a whole wouldn't be where they are without BLACKPINK's success. The REASON ppl can compare their fav as someone better than BP is *because* BLACKPINK took the standards of gg from Level 5 to Level 100+ GGs were NEVER the focus in kpop. The whole fandom was made of females with a small % of males rooting for groups like Bigbang. Males only liked if the ggs were cutesy and adorable. That's how older ggs maintained a male fanbase. However it was still hard as majority of females rooted for their OPPAs (still do). Do you know how hard it was to make a global breakthrough with a non-cutesy concept among a multitude of female followers who are ready to pull you down even unnecessarily bully and slvtshame you just cuz you achieved as much or More than their Oppas? Females were not marketed as girlfriends unlike male idols who were sold to fans saying "this is ur bf". They'd themselves say things like my "fans are my gf" to multiply fans obsession unknowingly. For BLACKPINK to have a global breakthrough with just debut was a HUGE achievement. And not just their own but an achievement for all females in kpop. Today they have many equal or 'first' achievement wrt bgs. That is unbelievable from a kpop standpoint of a decade back. And here instead of being thankful, people are busy trying to pull them to the ground for their success. Bfr GGs would be a national thing still if not for them. Standing currently in 2023, they have changed the entire game. 4th gen bgs are no more the highlight. GGs today have the first focus. Why do you think that is? If BLACKPINK unexpectedly didn't show what females in kpop could do, do you think they'd still have the spotlight? Where would it come from? BP, the most subscribed, the most viewed artist in the biggest original music release platform on the planet, did something we never thought could be the standard of women in kpop. Yes, BLACKPINK is indeed the revolution. And yes, they're called the best for a reason.

Another factor is that YG didn't over-saturate the market with constant comebacks and appearances. People complain that BP doesn't put out much music, but fans of groups that have a comeback every six months complain that many of the songs aren't that good. There are only so many bangers and great songs - that's why western artists only have a new album every 2-4 years, they wait until they have an album full of good songs. I've worked in marketing, and too much is often worse than not enough. What's better is the free, "organic", promotions they get from their fashion/beauty/jewelry ambassadorships, their magazine covers, the mentions on T.V., in newspapers, on entertainments shows, etc. Every time BP does anything, it's #1 trending - you can't buy that kind of publicity. You didn't mention the personal relationship that these four girls have from everything they've been through together. That has created a family feel, and a synergy that can't be created by anyone, not even YG, it has to happen naturally, and these girls have it. Many fans mention this and see it as a huge positive. What makes one group go to the top and not another is complicated, but it always seem to boil down to a nebulous "it" factor, a combination of the right people in the right place at the right time. YG's plan might very well have failed if not for his finding these four exact women.

The reason RM got less views is because of differing amount of solo support. With BP, they have loadss of OT1 stans but for every releas they usually come together. On the contrary to this, Army looks like a united front but MORE THAN MOST support collectively goes to the maknae line. You can see that from how Jimin recently crossed 1bill streams on 'Face'. Blinks are and always have been excellent streamers.

"Imperfectly Perfect!" While they might not be the most powerful singers in the world, they are the most powerful performers with the most powerful songs. They sit perfectly right in the middle of being an overwhelming performer and an underwhelming one. It's amazing and it's magical. Haters can deny that, but nobody comes close to the way their songs were produced, how they were portrayed in their MVs, and how the girls performed them to perfection. It's like you can't see anybody doing Lisa and Jennie's rap part like they did, same with Rose and Jisoo. Their lines are universal yet amazingly fit just for them. No other GIRL GROUP was able to create a persona like how BP did on each of their songs, their lines are so unique and amazingly distributed and was only tailored to fit the members. They can just to stand on stage and sing their songs and people will watch them, because they are BEWITCHING. That was the FORMULA, create a group that is CAPTIVATING.

I think this Blackpink stands out because they all have different tone of voice, unique music, individuality and all are pretty... I am not even into KPop and I'm Gen2 stan but Blackpink stands out for me and got my attention because they don't look like kpop robots like other GG who have the same height, body structure and look. I mean, it is hard to identify the members of other groups because they all look the same! Other GG all sound the same.. when my friend who is kpop fanatic tells me about other kpop GG I always tell her I don't know the others because I am confused, and they all sound the same! All GG music is high pitch, cutesy type which I hate. Blackpink is different. You can easily distinguish their voices, who is singing which part, and even in dancing shows their personality which other people say "they are not in sync" that's because each member's execution of dance move is different (although some might hate them for it). I remember I saw the comparison of their version of " So Hot" with other GG. While others did it similar to the original version, Blackpink performed it as if it was their song (which I actually thought it was their own song) and they did it so well. So yeah, Blackpink is the most hated female KPOP group, but I think it is because other fans think they are not "perfect" like their robotic idols who looks like they came out of kpop doll factory and jealous of their Global stardom.

They already had a winning formula that they were gaining international success with and which broke down a lot of barriers for Kpop girl groups - 2NE1. Each member of Blackpink is almost a direct replacement for a 2NE1 member CL=> Jennie; Park Bom => Rose; Dara => Jisoo and Minzy => Lisa. They just tweaked the formula to make Blackpink more appealing to a wider range of fans toning down the 2NE1 savagery and aggression by adding the 'pink' concept, increasing the high fashion side by choosing prettier girls (in 2NE1 only Dara fit well with Korean Beauty Standards) who were less argumentative with authority (2NE1 would complain about mistreatment and were seen as 'problematic') and who were close in age and had more in common personally (2NE1 debuted with two members at age 24 (Bom and Dara), one at 18 (CL) and 15 year old Minzy- a nine year age gap) whereas Blackpink debuted with Jisoo at 21, Jennie at 20 and Rose and Lisa at 19, meaning all members were at the same life stage. So YGE didn't make the concept of Blackpink from scratch, but basically honed and distilled everything they had achieved with 2NE1 over the previous 7 years (who also worked a lot with Teddy) and used that to place Blackpink in the best position for success. I don't think there was a masterplan, more of a lets to the same but better - it seems YGE was completely caught off guard by how successful they became so early in their career and didn't have enough material lined up for them. Blackpink were doing showcase sets in Japan with barely half a dozen songs to their name and their constant touring and promotional work meant that they didn't release much music, plus when they discovered that fans stayed with them and built up expectation for each release they realised that they could wring the most $$$ out of every release by spacing them out. They had a world tour and played Coachella without even having an album release and their deal with Universal Music Group (Interscope Records) meant that each album has to be backed by a world tour (again following on and expanding what 2NE1 started). The two year COVID hiatus would have been filled with their second world tour plus preparation for the next album, but the extent of the Born Pink tour is truly impressive.

I only got into Kpop because of them, I only had more interest in korean culture because of them. I only remember them when i see colors of black&pink😅 and only remember them when I see Celine, Chanel, Dior, and YSL. Ck, gentle monster, chivas, acme dlv, bulgari, tiffany&co, cartier, chanel jewelry, tamburin, soju😅, mac, caps, baggy pants, sweatshirts😅etc... I know other groups but I only have interest in them. But what makes the perfect group is bringing the BEST combination possible. The best combo of voices that contrast yet go together. The best combo of talent, performing skills, personality, goals, etc etc. A unique combination of looks do matter too. There hasn't been a gg more "full"than BLACKPINK has. BEAUTIFUL...simply beautiful. THAT'S EXACTLY THE MAIN reason why I am fascinated by blackpink and think they dominated where other groups failed. Simply put they are a kpop girl group designed and built with meticulous precision upon a concept born from cold calculated logic using the experience YG acquired throughout their years operating in the kpop industry. They are a result of a proof of concept experiment by YG. I dare say that no kpop group has ever been built with such deliberate specifications put into their planning than like that of blackpink . Make no mistake YG BUILT them to DOMINATE the kpop industry and should events unfold according to YG's plans that exactly what blackpink will do in the years to come. Not a blink by the way lol. Almost made a grave mistake. We have to give credit where credit is due. Despite all the planning it would have never worked if not for the individuals who made up blackpink. It had to be them. Although YG planed meticulously there were still thing's outside their control and things they could not predict. Thus it was extremely fortunate for YG that these individuals had great personality and most importantly extremely good chemistry amongst themselves. I believe Blackpink's marketing was designed to primarily capture new fans, not just K-pop fans. I didn't listen to k-pop before them. The general concepts seemed very lollipop to me, I can't relate. The're a lot of members in groups and I was lost to remember their names, culturally I had no connection, I thought everyone was very robotic. With BP it was easy to memorize the names, faces, hair, voices and personalities. I still have a hard time getting to know k-pop groups with a lot of members. And I'm not saying they should abandon the culture, but it's hard to identify with a new culture. Knowing them made me look at other groups as well and enter more into the K-pop universe. It made me interested in their culture.

Someone worthy pulls up the company at some point. Nobody should wait around and say that they didn't have a 'popular seniors' privilege. BLACKPINK on the contrary to their silver spoon story suffered because of their seniors. Yes Bigbang was big, but their success brought enough money for their own. *Ikon and BP* lived in a cramped infested apartment till debut. *Their senior privilege backfired* like no one could ever think. Main difference is that yg put all its energy and resources on a single gg at a time. Sucessful launch worked in their favor. Then they tested limited content strategy. That worked too. Later, they pushed for individual GBA contracts. It brought more visibility. The last resort was collab with foreign artists. Even that worked well for group. YG did all this, by taking complete control over BP & their music. They even managed to launch every member thru perfect solo. Im starting to wonder whether BP learnt marketing tactics of yg or not. BP next stage has to be a new business venture or a successful acting debut. Let's see how it goes

Very god explanation! I never understand why there are groups with so much members. Its harder to handle than only 4 girls. I heard BP was first planned as a 9 member group, than 5 than 4. A producer means they choose also the persons/voices/styles who fits well together. Jennie also said every girl lack in something but together they are complete like a puzzle or something similar. Good description 👍. Not to forget their company and the people behind did a great job and find the right concept . Their great producer Teddy Park made so much hits and create some badass moments in the songs. He is also a big reason for the success. BP appealed to all ages and gender. I am a father(age undisclosed😅) & had attended the Born Pink concert with my daughter(19). Other gg are mainly girl crush concept and look/sound alike with their other members(usually >4 members). I can hardly tell them apart and gave me an impression that I am watching the similar girl in different outfits. Dance choreo is not as impressive as BP, far lower notch from dancing queen Lisa. IMO, the most important and obvious reason for their success is Teddy Park's music. As you point out, there are plenty of pretty and talented female kpop idols, but they rarely have the hard hitting, testosterone driven, multi-genre head banging music that Teddy has produced. Teddy made 2NE1 successful, and those girls, while being very talented, were not the most photogenic female kpop idols. Then you can add all the reasons you mentioned. Love each and every member of Blackpink, but I wouldn't be a fan if their music catalogue was that of Twice or any other Kpop GG.

Its not wrong to say YG strategy work with them, but there is also other aspects that makes everything goes smoothly. Like their individual appeal, a group appeals, momentum, luck and other aspects. People have to remember the tactics YG use isnt only apply for blackpink but their other group too, but none other blackpink works this big of achievement. I agree on the thing you said too many members create confusion, but not sure if that was the real intention of YG, since they were supposed to be a 9 group. This is also the reason I think BabyMonster will not be as successful as BP, 7 is for me too much. 5 was already a limit for me. Actually already said this in some review about BM) However the biggest thing for me is why I like BP is because of their rapping/singing. It sounds international. If you listen to other k-pop girl groups, they all sing well and rap, but when they rap it sounds almost childish, the same for their singing. Like a happy 10 year old singing. For Asia that might work but for global it doesn't. Off stage Lisa sometimes sounds like a 10 year old, but on stage when singing or rapping never.

YG said many years ago, in the 2NE1 2nd GEN era...( BP is 3rd GEN and The BAEMON7 is 4th GEN).. they were a sort of a 'test group', but very sucessful, that his aim was for an elite, top tier (in fashion design w/ limited access..) , ALL girl group to appeal to the Western World. Why, since BP's phenomenal sucess, all the mentors, trainers, and the YGE image itself is based on the BP (YG) formula and has been mentioned as such by their staff. Though different, the image of THe BAEMON 7 is molded along the YG hip-hop lines seen in BP as well. YG's formula works, but the choice of IDOLS is critical to this formula. So far they have, through careful considerstion done well in making it work! 🤔🤔🤔👍😁

I'm not sure YG's "Masterplan" was this worked out. They did have something else in mind, but like Teddy said, they tried a lot of different combinations and the four just sounded the best plus it was pretty obvious even back then that the girls were a tight-knit "family" on their own and might avoid some of the personal problems 2ne1apparently had. I will give YG credit though. He's smart enough now to understand four Korean girls are a Korean girl group, where four mixed girls with different backgrounds are an International Kpop group and can have broader appear; Hence Babymonster's two Thai and two Japanese members. another thing I want to add is how yg promoted the band. many agencies from the debut send groups to shows, programs or contests to recruit fans, while yg began to promote blackpink as a commodity (in a good sense of the word): in 2017-2018, the group decorated the covers of many magazines, took part in photo shoots for major brands and it worked more effectively than promo on tv. all people learn about the product from advertising photos or videos that they see on screens in the city, at a shop or at a station when they go to work/school/university or through social networks, this is more effective than expecting some viewer to find out about the group through a program that is released at a certain time

Honestly, the most important part of Blackpink is the 4 members. Without any of the 4 members they aren't a perfect group. No one is perfect but thats the point this video said. What their not perfect in them makes them a huge hit! I think another important thing YG does is that they know when is the perfect timing. They know when to accept fashion deals and other deals on the perfect time. Unlike other companies like SM or Big Hit, YG actually knows when. For example, SM always rushes asepa with Coachella and Big Hit always rushes brand deals with New Jeans. But the fact that YG made it perfect for the Blackpink girls so they wouldn't get any hate. Also finding the right deal is a major or else people would be hating on them. Another point I feel like (not sure) is that they make their idols get hate or somewhat get them in scandals and make the most savage replies. This is to attract attention and make people feel bad for the idols.These bascially prove that YG is mean't to be in the Top 3 although some people try to replace YG with Big Hit...

Many people degrading blackpink success but tbh blackpink is a standard for kpop gg....their unique concept, aura, presence everything is different....they have their own genres....if you watch their covers like sure thing,so hot, clarity, can't take my eyes of you, let it be u will know how hella talented these girls are....in s way yg wasted their potential...I'm a yg stan myself but this is true.... giving them no comebacks in the name of "quality iver quantity" is good in some point but not always.....a almost 7 years old gg only has 2 full length album!!!! The critisism they get from ntz mostly bcz of lacks of comeback and but it's not even their fault.... People said they can't write their own music wht abt solo,gone,otg, lovesick girls,yeah yeah,stay?? Yg didn't even credited them in some songs..... Blackpink can do many more if yg give them more chance....
