As a former Max and Maya user / instructor, there are some things that make Blender more appealing to me and reasons why most people are jumping into Blender. Blender is far ahead of both Max and Maya when it comes to Modeling, resources and speed. . Amazing community with hundreds of people working to make the tool better . A huge library of addons that are way ahead of any of the plugins on an Autodesk product currently on the market . Smooth modifiers stack . Procedural Modeling . You can make your own modifiers / tools . Total customisation ( even interactive menu customisation) Second best sculpting tool inside of it. . In-depth component manipulation and data control . Best view port on a 3D tool out there with integrated real time ray tracing rendering in the view port . . Finally, the tool is constantly improving (not just bug fixes or little minor features cough Autodesk) and keeping people up to date with every new update.

Ngl, the heavy relience on shortcuts is what kept me away from blender for a long time, and that by default, it just didn't do things the way max or maya did, but i'm starting to seriously take a look at it, picking a few addons up helps too.
@fingfufar98786 ай бұрын
I agree, I would say the shortcut approach is much better for someone who have never used 3d software before, it's difficult to switch to it for Maya or Max users
@RC-abv6 ай бұрын
you can easely change to Industry Standart Shortcut on blender
@yopifribiutama14806 ай бұрын
It's not that simple. The Industry Standard shortcuts in Blender is good for viewport navigation, but for modeling I found it's still relying on shortcuts. For example: duplicate polygons as a new object.
@asr596 ай бұрын
You can press F3 and type the command. It will also tell you the shortcut. I had been using Maya for years before switching to blender, and the muscle memory was one of the worse things at the beginning, after about a month of using it.
@olivierskiro58506 ай бұрын
As a 3ds Max user, I think the main reason that keeps people away from it is the shortcuts, it's much more simpler for beginners to get used for it, than season Max or Maya user, bcs even though, shortcuts are present, they're nowhere that much used

Blender is indeed very good for hard surface modeling although it will require to buy some add ons as you mentioned hard ops. Is it on par with 3ds Max? Hell no. But for a lot of hobbyists especially this doesnt matter that much if at all. Its up to individuals to decide. Max modeler over here

IMO it is not only the keyboard driven UI - more like overall UX was somewhat bad. Windowing system was really abysmal, it still is really limited, windows have really unorthodox look, you can't simply tear, dock and close windows like in most other software, and earlier each window menu bar was located on the bottom edge of the window (?!). It still is possible to drag and split new windows accidentally, but this has gotten better as they've tweaked the drag areas and merging and extending windows is way easier now. Lack of proper popup windows is another thing, there are only full new windows or some transient popups that behave in different way than most OS level popup windows. I could also mention lack of proper fully working drag and drop importing of models (maybe getting there at some point), subpar file save and load dialog boxes used to be a thing, but these too have slowly gotten better. Crappy outliner, wonky camera and light manipulators... these still exist or have gotten some band-aid only lately. UV editor is way more limited compared to Maya and 3ds Max. Animation track system (one action per object, except for armature, which is a special case), limited NLA system. So it is not simply the keyboard driven UI. Despite of this, Blender offers good basic set of modeling tools, and UI and UX for this is above many older software packages.

Been using blender for years, i'd say if you want to spend some money on addons for hardsurface, go ahead a just buy plasticity and use it with blender.

honestly I love modeling in blender and the add-ons like boxcutter and hard ops are incredible to get certain shapes really quickly. However the downside is you are left with horrible topology that won't ever be used in a real production pipeline. Also you might save time in the modeling stage with these plug-ins but good luck when you get to uv-unwrapping that type of topology.... In conclusion: These addons are more aimed towards solo artists and models that won't be animated or unwrapped
@chidiebere23766 ай бұрын
I hope I am not being strict, but to correct your typing for those beginners that actually want to learn: Do you actually do modeling that well to say something like this because if you are a pro modeler I don't think you will even type this. Even maya and max have the same issues with their modeling plugins, it's not a problem but it just how polygon works. If you are actually a pro you should know that It's meant for you know where to add and fix topologies because the main thing is to understand that you are working with polygons not cads mathematical modeling so learn how to properly model with polygons and don't expect an automatic hard surface modeling tool with auto topology fix at the sport to avoid retopology and uv unwrapping because that my friend is the hard part of hard surface modeling all round. 😂😂

@thomasscheidegger28476 ай бұрын
maybe for some simple, random, fantasy assets modeling, blender is usable with some add-ons; -But for me, the only true solution would be a (volumetric/parametric/non-destructive-workflow) CAD app with INTEGRATED smart tessellation, real-world UV-unwrapping and correct PBR material assignment, with a live-bridge into UE5. Everything else is a toy.

Vanilla Blender is not the best fastest option for modelling editing 2d 3d data but its rel. simple while its limited.. Add on$ and new updates (4.2lts) changed and will be even further boost posabilities . ..UV , Rigging , Im./Exporting composting is another story . Blender is a Suite to creat 2d 3d Art but its not indended to be the best Editor of all Editors, its more a toolbox full of options that works good, sometimes not,... specially compared to Pro tool$ and Pro editor$..

Even MS Paint has key shortcuts. Lack of buttons is just a lazy approach to UI/UX. Blender GUI is a chaotic mess and you can't even edit much of it. Not to mention complete lack of - usable - precision modeling tools.

That's debatable but Maya has cemented itself in the entertainment industry since along time but today it's dragging behind alot, however Blender is gaining more popularity in the indie sector which is their main target & btw indie industry is way bigger than AAA Studios in terms of numbers.only matter of time before Blender catch up to Maya and be neck to neck, what keeps Maya afloat is the rigging & animation tools with studios building their tools around that but that could easily change if blender offers similar or better tools in the future.
