How Bluetooth Works

My wireless speakers, earphones, hands-free calling - what’s the magic behind Bluetooth tech? How does it all work?
The idea of what we call “Bluetooth” today was first introduced back in 1989. Dr. Nils Rydbeck, who was the chief technology officer at Ericsson Mobile, and inventor Dr. Johan Ullman had this revolutionary idea to develop a pair of wireless headsets. They brought Dr. Jaap Haartsen on to the project. A mere 5 years later, he’d be the engineer who made the breakthrough and came out with the first protocol.
It took a few more years to perfect the technology. But finally, in 1999, they presented their first hands-free headset to the world at the Comdex computer exposition and trade show in Las Vegas.
SUMMARY
- Three companies were working separately to create short-range radio technologies that would connect computers and different devices using short-wave frequencies. But since the invention was in its early stages, Intel, Ericsson, and Nokia decided that the best way to proceed was to create a single wireless standard.
- Bluetooth works a lot like Wi-Fi. It uses radio waves to send data between devices at short distances. Now, whereas Wi-Fi uses radio waves to transmit data between your router (where your Wi-Fi comes from) and your device, Bluetooth does it between devices.
- Bluetooth can connect to 8 devices at the same time without any interference from other wireless items like garage doors or baby monitors.
- The Bluetooth transmitters in both your computer and your devices use 79 different frequencies in that range.
- If you’re wondering what devices use Bluetooth nowadays, the answer is almost all of them. Phones, headphones, earbuds, speakers, stereos, TVs, cameras, cars, tablets, game consoles, you name it!
- When Bluetooth first came out, it was really easy for someone to access your data without your permission. But over time this technology has become more secure.
- There’s this trend called bluejacking where a person or company can send you their electronic business card or an ad as a text message using Bluetooth. Of course, when you see that, you either ignore it or panic! But this is something that mostly happens in public places where everyone is using their phones.
- The amount of non-ionizing radiation present in Bluetooth headphones is a lot less than what’s in a typical cellphone.

Fun fact (and a correction), I was working at IBM back in the 1990's when Bluetooth was just a pilot project and we were testing it. And the companies involved in creating the Bluetooth standard were actually Intel, Ericsson and Nokia, yes, but also IBM and Toshiba. Not a fact you would find in standard writings about it sometimes, because most mention only Ericsson, Intel and Nokia. But if you look, you will find it was 5 companies, not 3. Three companies invented the tech. but 5 of them launched it and the Bluetooth standard and the Bluetooth SIG (special interest group) in 1998 and IBM and Ericsson were the founding signatories. IBM and Ericsson also helped improve the footprint of 5G recently too.

I use a Bluetooth headset which simultaneously connects two devices. I connect my Android mobile phone and my Windows laptop simultaneously. While I attend virtual meetings on my laptop, my headset alerts me and switches automatically to my mobile phone whenever a call comes (also if I make a call myself) and automatically switches back to my laptop when the call ends. Amazing technology.

From your modem / router, or from somewhere else on the front or back of your computer, perhaps ? The people that give dislikes on vids like this I’ll never understand. Its an informative explanation with nothing but the facts. Its not like Bright Side has some kind of ulterior motive or speaking subjectively about this topic.

I'm wary of new technologies. Mainly I resist them, because to me it's a hassle to have to learn new things and it can also be stressful, and I don't handle stress well. When that happens I get flustered and frustrated and am tempted to give up on it and walk away. This might explain why some reacr the way you described. Though the video was easily understandable in this case.

Sorry, but I just gotta update this. You're explaining Bluetooth in today's world. The reason Bluetooth was such a huge discovery was that it could maintain a solid radio connection without ghosting and signal distortion, all possible on a single small chip that hardly used any power. Radio signals distort extremely with slightest distance changes or obstacle reflection. That's why cellular came about due to its extremely short wavelength that didn't distort as much. We all remember ghosting on our TVs antennas back in the day, well Bluetooth fixed that. It's like a solar sun tracker in a way, but more efficient. Earpieces are small and Bluetooth made them suddenly become radio stable. If you ever used old walkie talkies, you'd know the annoying drift of the radio. Bluetooth was so stable in fact, that the later versions began issuing network protocols and suddenly Bluetooth carried data. It could do it all in a small chip that used hardly any power. But Bluetooth was credited for is stable radio ability on a single chip that could be used on many devices. It's now used with higher frequencies.

Bluetooth only has a limited range though - about thirty feet. I assume the range is much bigger when it is networked. Is this correct ? And wouldn't that then make it virtually the same as Wi-Fi ?

It's called latency, it'll be there in almost all wireless devices. You need to check the latency before purchase. It should be minimum. Recently snapdragon has released a new Bluetooth chip with Aptx technology which they claimed that has very less latency.
