I think a huge part of it as well is that if everyone’s working harder, the standard becomes much higher as well. Instead of 80% being the standard, it’s now 120% baseline. To distinguish yourself, it’s not just staying overtime and studying outside the workplace… it’s making every waking moment of your life about your work. I know that because I watched my father do it for my entire life, and when he stopped and tried to be a part of my life I could honestly say I never knew him and we never managed to be as tight as me and my mom.

Good point. When everyone starts working equally hard, that becomes the new average. So then one must work extra extra hard to distinguish oneself from the rest so that this new person is now considered "working hard".
@Argonaught0
@Argonaught0 2 ай бұрын
@@MrBigcuts36 I don’t think the idea that “120% is the new average” happens “organically.” I think that this kind of work culture gets pushed (sometimes subtly) by employers (and maybe society) as a way to extract effort beyond the scope of an employee’s compensation and often, their job description. Getting colleagues to compete with each other for the same promotion, for example, causing them to have to work beyond what the baseline expectations of a job are, is a sweet deal for the company. They get free labor and barely have to do anything directly to force it from their workers.
@MrBigcuts36
@MrBigcuts36 2 ай бұрын
@@Argonaught0 Sure that's how it starts at first, but then all companies do the same thing which spreads to society as a whole which then sets the new standard for future generations. So it still sort of happens "organically" in that sense.

As a Boomer(almost) I can tell you,without a doubt,I worked harder and longer than my Kid.She has a much better grip on a work life balance than I ever did. Employers looked down on employees that job hopped,keeping a ruling upper hand on our throats. My Kid will tell a toxic employer to shove it and have a better job,more perks and a fat pay bump by the end of the week. I'm so proud

I think an issue is the futility isn't just an emotional one. It's that base needs are harder and harder to meet. The bar of what is expected of a person to be told they are worth being paid enough money to afford food and shelter is getting higher and higher. So the stress is getting higher and higher. Like in maslow's hierarchy of needs physiological and safety needs must be met before we can adequately address our emotional needs. An argument about people's stances on minimum wages as how much people should make for 40hrs/week of their time vs. how much it costs for basic necessities can be very telling. And when you're coming home tired from work and being told what you do isn't worth enough to keep you from behing homeless....yeah you check out.

I always describe it as “the minimum wage needs to be at least high enough for an employee to be able to stay alive between shifts.” This expresses the futility that young people (and even some older people) today face every day very clearly and very succinctly. These boomers forget that in their day, they had _ONE SINGLE BREADWINNER IN THEIR ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD AND THEY ONLY WORKED ONE SINGLE JOB!_ This has become impossible for most people today. They also complain about how “awful” kids today are - well it might have something to do with the fact that two parents can no longer afford to raise their family AND keep their family alive at the same time - usually both parents must work full time. Gee, I wonder who is going to raise those kids when there are no parents at home to raise them??? And the blindness of the boomer generation goes on and on and on - it isn’t limited to just these few items I pulled off the top of the deck here. The WHOLE DECK is like this today! As a Gen X’er, I feel awful for the younger generations today - ya’ll have been _UTTERLY SCREWED_ by a generation or two who had everything they need and refused to look at how they were allowing it to be destroyed because they liked listening to the siren songs of a few decades of leaders oozing with psychopathic charisma and charm. What we’ve done to the younger generations today is not OK.

Yes, we need to set our ow standards and expectations. It is also true that external ones can be a good starting point or references to set up one's own. It's best if we could balance or reconcile both (that alao means changing or giving up certain aspects of both sides). My problems is that when I set up my own standards, they're usually way too high even compared to normal standards in some areas then some feels like not high enough. I usually follow my own trying my best to balance both out but even my own standards are still way too high, unrealistic and unsustainable long term. 😅

The problem is not just compensation either. Industries have become so complex that many, many people never regularly see the end product or end result/impact of their labour. So youre working hard, pay is not amazing, work life balance is non existent, and on top of all of it, the satisfaction of seeing your own personal impact is just not there for so many. I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way! I've always believed one of the reasons why work feels so unfulfilling for the newer generations is that many modern jobs lack a sense of purpose beyond earning money. People are dedicating over half of their day to accomplishing nothing that actually matters to them (or to the people around them) besides reaching the quota they need for their paycheck. There's no gratification, moral payoff, or internal satisfaction that makes the effort feel worth it.

i think another problem is just the fact that the work we're doing (at least for a lot of people) isn't achieving anything of value. most people work some kind of desk job for some company that has 20 competitors, so you're basically spending half your life contributing to a p*ssing contest. if you're successful enough to provide a good life for you and your family, or have the time and money to do fun things before you're too old to enjoy them, then that can provide meaning, but the work itself rarely does. we're supposed to all be working together to help eachother and move society forwards, making everything about money has just stripped the soul out of life at this point

I could build routines around the structure, and being "off" wasn't a complete productivity killer. At home, the only routines were the kids' and my school schedule. No school = no schedule = no routines = no meds = nothing gets done = piles of shame, doomscrolling, and dishes piling while I'm both kicking myself AND unable to do anything about it. But then, next month, I go back to my 1100 Pph...and I get flagged for going too slow compared to the warehouse standard. That can become a write up. So to keep my job, I have to go harder even if my body can't do it hourly, so I can keep my paycheck, which means there will be days I can barely function due to physical and mental burnout. They also punish people, especially the youth, who complain publicly about this toxiic workers' society. I know here many diligent people who became chronically 51ck after their apprenticeship. Decent (not even great, just decent) salary, we can actually get through a month without worrying if we will have money. I work way harder than I ever did at my previous job and feel less mentally tired, I have more responsibilities and am more accountable for problems yet I have less stress. The same kind of problem that used to make me feel ugh how do I deal with this comes up and I think no problem lets do this. I had less time off last year than any time at my previous job and didn't feel I needed that break to "recover". It is not about not wanting to work hard. It is a basic aspect of motivation in anything in life that you are capable of dealing with something much better when there is a reason behind it and the outcome it will lead to.

I started working with the mindset of i will never make the higher ups happy and set smaller goals for myself and make myself happy with the work i achieved. and focus on the work not pleasing others. If i get complaints for not working hard enough they can watch security video and see how hard i work. I'll just focus on myself. Letting go is great.

I am 28 years old and I am already tired from working for years. I started to work when I was 17 and I have over 4/5 of the time until now. I already feel pain in parts of my body that make me consider how am I going to leave to the rest of my life after I'm not even reached 30. For the most of that time, I had work days for over 12,13, 14 even 16 hours and I never get to the point where I have enough money to enter university or live by myself bc I'm already at the point where I need to take a break and every time it gets harder to recover, harder to find another job, harder to meet my needs and I am definitely not spending my money ignorantly. More and more rarely I'm spending for pleasure, heck, not even for presents for my family. And I think something needs to change bc I'm definitely not the only one.

I'm about to turn 32. I've been working since i was 15. I've never been rewarded for my hard work. I've been belittled and treated like a lesser person because i wasnt in the power position. After 17 years of hard work, i have absolutely nothing to show for it. Expenses have gone up faster than i can improve my wages. Jobs pay less than they did last last year, less than they did 5 years ago. Insurance rates exploded so i couldn't afford that, lost my license, got pulled over and charged with a crime for trying to make enough money to get it turned back on. I'm literally a criminal now because i couldn't make enough to pay for the LITERAL essentials.

I have literally never cared about society as it has done nothing but try and take advantage of me. I grew up in the worst conditions while still both expected to strive for success as well as being told I'm only destined for failure and before I was even 10 years old I stop caring all together, so much so that I almost took my own life. I was able to talk myself out of it by realizing I shouldn't end it over all the terrible people in my life and instead got very angry at the world, mostly my family but it didn't really matter who it was I hated you all, it took many years to finally get back to a place where I can love myself and others but I couldn't care any less about the society we live in as it makes the world much worse place for 90% of the people in it and it needs to change drastically

I worked 16 days straight for a huge event for my company, racked up 50 hours comp time ( my total comp time right now is 103 hours) and when I said I need two days off to recover cause I also go extremely sick for 2 of those weeks with the flu, my direct supervisor made me feel like I was doing something bad by asking. Now I am going to do like everyone else, when I want to use comp time I will just call in sick instead of putting in a request.

I build generators so I guess I got lucky in the fact I know I’m contributing somewhat to society. I also got lucky that I only have a high school education and building just surprisingly comes naturally to me. It pays alright at 25/hr plus benefits. But the repetitiveness of it definitely gets to me sometimes and I can feel it taking a toll on me mentally. I’m scared that the money I make isn’t enough to basically live in this economy. And I already have enough trouble with taking care of myself since I’m Autistic and have ADHD. I feel like my entire life revolves around work and I even feel guilty for having weekends or taking my allowed days off because of what others might perceive as “being lazy” or “not taking the job seriously enough”. Just another thing to add to my anxiety lol. But yeah, even though there’s so many supportive and chill people at my work I keep feeling like something is gonna happen to ruin it all for me. On a lighter note: Apparently I’m on the waiting list to get to go on the new green energy line (hydrogen generators that basically use water and the byproduct is oxygen) so I guess we’ll see how that goes. It pays up to 30/hr supposedly so that’d be nice.

You can’t live for the sake of others. Only yourself and what you want to accomplish everything else is a stepping stone. People make it poor to think selfishly like that but its better than not serving yourself your whole life. Nobody wants to live in subservience to a person or a group of people who never really appreciate them and think the world owes them anything.

thats untrue. we're social creatures, so we're by design dependent on relationships. if our work lets us stay lonely, then it's not worth it at all. but how many people can work so that they arwnt lonely anymore? it even hits kindergardners and other social genres of jobs. just for oneself is a really bad idea in my eyes. well, unless it includes relationships, friends and stuff

I think it's more that there's a selfishness and self centeredness. People today I think are too focused on themselves. This mentality only carries so far, and leads to an emptiness. The cure is serving, yes ourselves, but importantly our environment, our family, our friends, our community. It is the meaning in their lives that is missing in this kind of fellowship. Too much self centered thought, with an absence of any depth of self knowledge, disconnected from not only themselves, but also from any meaningful service that brings with it a natural joy and love. This combination is deadly.

I finally got to a job that paid me well. Internship to part time to full time to raises. $4k/month. I wasn’t rich but I was doing well. BUT it happened at the start of Biden’s reign. And the bad economy lead to job cuts so I only had the good pay for 3 years. Point is, when money is taken through taxes and politicians poor decisions on the country, what motivation is left? The reward for working hard doesn’t exist unless it’s your company. So as someone who’s been through a lot of different types of jobs, do enough not to get fired. Don’t burn yourself out like I have. Cuz my work ethic is gone. I have not fully recovered from my burnout.

I am reminded of the ancient myth of Syphesis. Syphesis was punished in the afterlife by being forced to roll a boulder up a hill and EVERY SINGLE TIME he got close to the top of the hill it would roll back down ontop of him and he would have to start all over. So if something is syphesian, it is a task that is never finished, it is never done, there is NEVER ANY SATISFACTION OF COMPLETION! I have found the word Syphesian applicable to so much in our modern world. Syphesian can apply to things like laundry and washing dishes, of course, but when it applies on a larger scale.... that is seriously disheartening.

Part of it is also because older generation is jealous of the younger generations for living in a more advanced society having better education or technology or more secured food source etc. Younger generations are not only work harder, but are actually paid less in terms of housing affordability, job security, or retirement plan. So the older generation assumes it must due to the youngs being lazy.
