I love your Liga Portugal videos. It's my favorite league outside my native NB1 in Hungary. My favorite team is Boavista, but Braga is another team I respect so much for their great work in the last two decades. :)

Braguista here. Great video, you got the story spot on! You could have only delved deeper into the controversy surrounding the Vandinho and Mossoró suspension. It shows perfectly why no one can break the top 3, they got huge suspensions over an alleged tunnel fight with Benfica players, no Benfica player got any significant suspension and no referee actually witness said fight. I don't want to sound sour, that Benfica team was very good and maybe it just wasn't meant to be, but the corruption in Portuguese football is a reality that's holding it back

@@joaolourencomvf In a way, I gotta agree with you. When doing my research I tried to find images of the incidents but I couldn't find none. I'm not saying it didn't happen, but the timing when they announced the ban is suspect to say the least

Another amazing video. I remember watching this season when I was young. Although I’m not a Braga fan I was rooting for them. It would be nice to have a more competitive league and more winners outside the big 3 with all titles. I’m hoping the centralization of tv rights in a few years helps that along a lot.

Yeah, we're inching closer to 100 editions of the league and we've only had different champions outside the big three 2 times. It's crazy.

The Monopoly of the Big Three has already been broken twice prior to the 2009/10 season: Belenenses (1945/46) and Boavista (2000/01). However, Braga is the club that is currently best placed to break this monopoly one more time.

Im benfiquista but this time in Portuguese footbal was so refreshing to see. Even in the last years Braga had some top football but its really hard nowadays when the entire league system is rigged, i mean we had Sporting × Braga in the 2nd fixture. Nowadays we have Benfica × Sporting right during Christmas break, and most major games btw the top 3 on at the very last part of the calendar. I dont think there's a major European football league that this happens.

@TheMajestic8

In your opinion Throne.What does Braga needs to do to get back to those days?
@Solrac-Siul
@Solrac-Siul Ай бұрын
it is almost impossible. Braga kind of did it, Boavista had kind of done it in the 90s, Beleneneses almost kind of done it in the 50s or something, yet the reality is that those clubs are only able to kind of do it for a couple of years before it all collapses . Portugal is too small for clubs like those to grow as longs as the 3 big ones exist in the transregional shape they have (in other words those 3 teams are supranational while a club like Braga is regional . Benfica has probably 5 to 6 millions supporters in portugal, sporting probably 2.5 millions and porto maybe 2 millions, what means that only about 500000 are disputed by multiple smaller clubs and therefore there is no supporter base left for a club like Braga to expand. Even if everyone in braga (the city) supported Braga (the club) they would have at best 150000 supporters - yet probably 50% of the population in braga supports either benfica porto or sporting above their own city team. so there is very limited revenue sources for a club like Braga, or Boavista before braga, to be able to really compete on a regular basis. tney may be able to pull off a good season but right after that all the best players will end up being sold , normally to the 3 big teams, as they want to play in one of them . Hell, look at the now Manchester united manager, rubem amorim, he was doing a good job in Braga, sporting had some coach issues, needed a coach, and just "bought " Amorim's contract when maybe 1/3 of the season had been played.
@marktheshark7588
@marktheshark7588 Ай бұрын
@Solrac-Siul Wow!I didn't know it was so bad in Braga.When it comes to their own fans supporting other clubs instead of their own.So in other words,Braga coming close to winning the title is a once in a life time thing.Just like it was a once in a lifetime thing when Leicester City won the Prem.
@Solrac-Siul
@Solrac-Siul Ай бұрын
@@marktheshark7588 Actually braga even has it good, many other teams may not even get a 50% ratio in their own city. Guimaraes probably also has similar ratio, and maybe Victoria Setubal, but that is about it. Some weeks ago Benfica was "away" playing I do not even remember who, and 80 to 90% of the stadium were benfica supporters. The home fans actually sold their tickets to benfica supporters, and the mayor of the city welcomed Benfica in the town like it was the biggest event of the year for the city - and to be honest it p[robably was. Moreover, Benfica actually has "Benfica supporter associations" in almost every medium to large city , and even in places that do not even classify as cities. Sporting and porto also have them, but benfica is just larger in social terms so has more "benfica houses". in fact one can say that benfica is "bigger than portugal", and if the fans had to chose between portugal being european champions or benfica winning the Champions league, the majority would pick benfica. Hell benfica elections have higher participation than actual national elections....the only way a team like braga would be able to compete would be to be purchased by ellon musk or jeff beezos or someone like them, and the receive 500 mllions pounds of investment to buy players and another 500 millions to pay the wages (as they cannot generate enough revenue for the salaries ). And even then I am not sure since I do not think the people are, in a mental aspect, prepared for someone that not one of the 3 big clubs to win the league every 2 or 3 years.

its hard but i think it could be done if they start following FC Basel's model from a couple years ago that not only made them one of the most successfull teams in switzerland but also lead into great runs in europe (for a team from switzerland at best today it would lead into a conference or even a europa league with luck) basically: great academies along with an insanely good scouting system but not selling the players instantly or too late (Salah was one of those players he played there for 2 years)

Braga could not do it, only because that year, the championship was played outside the football pitch as well. Benfica is facing a corruption process where the league referee president from that year is accused of corruption. That year, Braga was clearly hindered by numerous cases, including a 6 game ban for the team DMF for agression atemp while Di Maria who actually attacked someone did not even receive a red. Also know as "campeonato dos túneis" because Benfica was very benefited that year.

The furthest Braga have got is to where they are now, a team stronger than most clubs but light years away from the big three, who finish fourth barring a bad season from one or two of the big three, where they manage a second or third place and that's what happened this season. Sporting and Porto were terrible and Braga took advantage to finish second... but they never evolved, it's false that they're “getting closer and closer” to the big three.
