The HMS Ocean; Britain's biggest warship and the flagship of The Royal Navy, as she deploys on a sensitive seven-month journey to the Middle East.
She's a floating village with her own hospital, shop, police force, church, bank, laundry, gym and even pubs. However, this village is an amphibious assault weapon - designed to sail across the world and, when necessary, bring violence to the enemy. Its population of military personnel is, surprisingly, mostly not gung-ho, but a funny and often thoughtful set of people living in and operating a highly complex war-making machine. And they love their ship.

@@navnig I retired after 34 years. As an artificer I filled in a Draft Preference Card. My preferences were always met. I never served in a a ship built to civilian standards. After 9 years I was promoted to engineer officer where I was appointed, not drafted, to ships and shore jobs. These appointments were made after personal discussion with my appointer/career manager typically considering 3 or so options. As the first deputy staff marine engineer to the Devonport Flotilla I visited Ocean many times. As I stated originally, I'm glad I did not have to go to war in it. Even to go astern the main engines had to be shut down first and then re-started. So sunshine, wind your neck in.

HMS 'Ocean' was decommissioned in March 2018, and re-commissioned into the Brazilian Navy in June 2018. She is currently in commission as NAM 'Atlântico', home-ported in Rio de Janeiro. NAM stands for 'Navio Aeródromo Multipropósito', which means 'Multi-purpose Aircraft Carrier' in English.

"Navio aeródromo" actually means "airport ship", although the name usually applies to carriers in Brazil. The name "aircraft carrier" is "porta-aviões"... But since the ship will operate drones in the Brazilian navy, and since she operated Ospreys in the Royal navy (and those are also "aircrafts"), it´s not incorrect call it a "carrier".

@prepperjonpnw6482
@prepperjonpnw6482 2 жыл бұрын
Back during the Falklands war the Royal Navy experienced being fired upon with Exocet missiles from the argentine air force. I believe one of their ships took a direct hit from one. Since then they have developed several different ways to avoid that happening again. A big part of those developments came from the American company that makes the Exocet and doing a sort of reverse engineering. By knowing exactly how that missile works and with what technology it uses they were able to create multiple defences against it. And in return the Royal Navy gave information gathered from the ship that was hit to the manufacturer of the missile so that they could make improvements to their weapon system. By the two sides working together both were able to make improvements in both attack and defence. Something of interest is that all ships in the american navy and the Royal Navy now have onboard a device that emits a signal that only Exocet missiles can receive. To put it in simple terms Exocet missiles do not work against ships in either of those two navies no matter who fires the missile. This had to be done because you never know when a country that is currently an allie may become an enemy as was the case with Argentina. It never occurred to anyone at the time that Argentina would invade sovereign territory of the U.K.

If you're referring to the Phalanx CIWS then yeah, and it's hard to believe it's an over 40 year old weapons system that was originally just used on US destroyers and other naval combat ships back in the late 70s onward. It's turned out to be so reliable and effective it's still relatively unchanged to this day, sadly though it's rarely ever actually needed nowadays in combat due to it being more of a last line of defense if any missiles or projectiles in general make it past any anti air/personnel missiles at longer range.

So the Eisenhower is actually disguised as a British ship. What brilliant strategy. Even has a Brit crew.

Odd title for an HMS Ocean Pt 2 vid. Somenody dropped the ball or it was intended as clickbait.

Worked at Litton electronic tube division mid 80s right at the CAD revolution. Litton built the tubes for weapon system signal all very hush hush! Low pay! Bomb threats gave the crew a day off. made by anti war groups mostly? Or someone wanting day off? All joking aside.

From an old carrier sailor, I have but one question......Where are the HMS Ocean's aircraft? Not one launched or recovered....Except for a U.S. Osprey

The Osprey clip was from a different ship, HMS Ocean was decommissioned nearly 4 years ago, it was a rusted pile of junk.
