Have you ever considered making a video about why some Japan-developed video games mention the characters' blood types? (Street Fighter, Resident Evil, some Final Fantasy games & a few others have been known to do it) Apparently, it has to do with a common superstition from Japan that a person's blood type can have an effect on their personality, kind of like Astrology, where people believe what month you were born in designates what your personality is like. I like the subtle reference to the legend of the two rival dragons (from the Arthurian mythos) in Leon and Raihan's rivalry: In the story there is a prophetic dream of a red dragon of fire (representing Arthur) fighting and defeating a white dragon of ice (representing his enemies). Meanwhile, in game you have the current champion (ergo King) who uses the fiery Charizard (yeah it's more orange and not red but it's close enough) and his rival's signature Pokemon is Duraludon: a white dragon found in icy areas.

About the rune stones: The reason to why they were considered imbued with magic was the runes themselves. In fact, they have much more in common with alphabets like kanji than what I'm using to type this right now, due to being symbols of concepts as well as letter. And the way they were "discovered" in myth? Oden hang himself pierced by his own spear from the world tree for nine days and nights, before having the revelation of these magical symbols. For example 'M' may look like it'd make a 'mmm' sound to us, but it's an 'eh', and represents Sleipneir, drugs and astral travel. Which brings me to the whole berserker thing. Don't eat those fungi. You'll just get sick and throw up, not a good look for trading or pillaging. Best regards, a Swede who does rune readings and partly follows the asatro.

But if you refused to pay a brownie with food it became enraged and turned into a boggart (or other troublemaking fae depending on the region) and absolutely trashed the place - causing general destruction and making your lives difficult until you fed it. You can see Morpeko's household sprite origins in the design from the little aprons they seem to be wearing and the hangry form is a clear reference to the Boggart transformation.

My favorite Britishism might be surprising. It's the inclusion of curry as a staple dish in the Galar region. Curry as we see it in the Galar region might be reminiscent of how the Japanese make curry, but that's because curry was introduced to Japan by the English. The story goes that after WW2, soldiers from the Japanese and British navies had a joint training session, and a British interpretation of curry (as a hearty stew) was served every Wednesday for dinner in the training ship's mess hall. That same interpretation made it out of the mess hall, and it's now a staple food in Japan.

I'm sure someone has already brought this up, but the Fossil Pokemon are also a massive reference to Paleontological history. Many fossils were found when the study was first gaining prevalence, but often were mismatched (with some debate still being around many like the Brontosaurus to this day) and people would do what scientists do and try to theorize how they lived. Regardless of the true inspiration, I can't help but feel sorry for them (but that won't stop me from making an army of them until one's a different color).

Personally, I believe the fossil pokemon is all about how paleontology started. Look up what Megalosaurus and Iguanadon initially looked like. Basically giant lizards. Also the original Brontosaurus was a Brachiosaurus skull on an Apatosaurus body. There was alot of this when paleontology started and the first discoverers of recognized dinosaur bones were British. Still a great video!

6:30 On the topic of badly assembled fossils. It's even more direct than that. During the initial dinosaur craze the "scientists" of the age (back then basically a curious rich guy who had enough time on his hands) where absolutely desperate for the prestige of discovering a new species with meany... meany... instances of them doing exactly what we see here and slapping together any old bones that vaguely fit.

I love the fact that punk rock music is so heavily represented in the Galar region. A lot of the most famous names in Rock 'n Roll come from the UK. That spirit of loud music and troublemakers that broke the traditional norms of that part of British history is so ingrained in the Pokemon region, that the native wildlife has been infected with the rebel spirit, allowing it to go beyond any other region's version of that species!

My favorite is probably Corviknight. It's based on the ravens of the tower of London which in itself is already awesome. Then, it's also a knight to drive home the idea of guarding the country from ruin. Possibly it's also being conflated with the Yeoman warders that are in charge of looking after the ravens and guarding the crown jewels.

Gaijin Goombah, I just love the work you do and the discussion you encourage your viewers to have. The stuff you mentioned and the amazing factoids in the comment sections like Sirfetch'd and the Welsh leek (And the fact that I'm an English Major) makes watching videos like this all the more enjoyable. Though I was bummed out you didn't touch on the Galarian Box Mascots, since their origins are the more obscure ones (as of now) So it only makes sense that I add some of my favourite facts, through my own findings and from other sources: 1) Though the fossil Pokemon are obviously based on the 'Piltdown Man', but there's more to the origins. The first findings of the Iguanadon was thought to have walked on four legs and had a horn on its nose. It wouldn't be until long before it was found out that it stood on two legs and the horn on its nose, was actually its fricking thumb! Arctovish is a clear nod to this, as to an untrained noob the Pokemon looks fine, until you realize its head is put on backwards! 2) The Hatterene line may be a reference to the witch folklore, but there's more to this line. Hatterene's hat is actually not English, but from Mongol. And if you haven't noticed, most Hatterene's body is hair (kinda like a certain lap-dancing witch) which according to another Culture Shock video, is based on the lore that witch draws their power from their own HAIR! (Kinda like a Super Hero that Smashes bad guys, like how a certain lap-dancing witch smashes Angels) A cool bit of side note: The witch in the forest is quite common in most folklore, especially in India and Russia, with folk like Baba Yaga and the Churel (Daini if you're in Bangladesh) (Kinda like a Pokemon who was known as 'The Forest Witch') 3) Speaking of Hatterene, the Grimmsnarl may also be based on witch hair power and fay folklore, but what you may not know that it is a subtle nod to Arthurian Legend, namely the Green Knight, who once kneeled down so that he could assassinate King Arthur. Hmm, kinda like Morgrem and his signature move, False Surrender. And spoiler Alert, he's not the only one. Check out the comment section talking about Leon and Raihan's rivalry. And those were just a smidgen of what I found. Bravo to Game Freak for referencing awesome English lore.

Fun fact that I learned recently. The word Viking is often misused. Viking is the act of pillaging and sailing around to do so. Someone may be called a Viking if they are partaking in the act of Viking, but to say something like “the Viking village” is actually incorrect terminology. Dom Noble talks about it in his video on the Viking romance novel genre and a book he reviews. I encourage people to see his stuff. He’s a great reviewer.
@RaiJolt25 жыл бұрын

Not misused as much as transformed its meaning. The altered meaning has remained in use while the original has gone they way of the dodo. Same with barbarian not meaning foreigner anymore. So a viking village is correct modern English term for a village of norsemen with a history of or the intent to go viking in its old meaning.

Sophie Jones 3 years ago Sirfetch'd is also, it seems to me, a reference to Sargent Llewelyn in the play Henry V. His lance and shield are made from leeks. In Henry V, there is a scene where Llewelyn teaches one of his underlings to respect other peoples' traditions...by beating the guy with a leek (that he was wearing in his cap for St. David's Day

On berserkers: The term ber serk means bare/bear shirt (i.e. in old Norse those sounded the same, just as they do in modern English) this has led some to propose that berserkers did indeed wear armor and did not go into combat wearing nothing, high out of their minds, biting their shields. In fact, every historical account of berserkers describes them as somewhere between a bodyguard and a personal champion. The bear, then, is given as a status symbol for someone who got paid quite a bit to be a good fighter, more than enough to know the value of maille. The individuals mentioned as biting their shields in historical accounts tend to be portrayed as fools who could have their jaws broken by just kicking the shield. The myth of the berserkers as madmen who went naked and drugged into battle isn't convincing for anyone who knows anything about Norse culture and warfare.
@VinVaris5 жыл бұрын
Most accounts of actual berserkers were that of just Viking norsemen who wore the pelts of bears over their armor so they could ambush villagers. In a way Berserkers were just muscular Ninja. Some accounts claim that berserkers first began when Vikings needed both food and warmth so they used bear meat and pelts, and then made a game out of it.
