How Broken Were Dark Synchros? | Yu-Gi-Oh!

Underground Arachnid used to be my signature card back in high school. My strat was: 1: Normal summon krebons and use its effects during my opponent's next turn to block their attacks by paying lifepoints 2: During the following turn, normal summon Armored Bee and use its effect to weaken one of their strong monsters 3: tune Krebons with Armored Bee to summon Underground Arachnid 4: steal another monster and attack into their weakened monster, avoiding their mirror force/sakuretsu armor/etc and doing serious damage. Sometimes I'd even MST the equipped monster, or ram my arachnid into their bigger monster, just to free up space to steal another monster. Fun card!

Considering how much the 5ds anime was changed during production (allegedly entire episodes were made and ready to go only to be cancelled last minute) I wouldn't be surprised if that was actually the case. I mean, every dark signer had both an earthbound immortal AND a personal boss monster. All the other boss monsters were part of the archetype they were using, except for hundred eyes dragon, who suddenly became a non-archetype dragon. My theory is that the character was made into a figure from Yusei's past last minute, and for some reason they wanted him to have a "generic" dragon like Yusei got Stardust. That was kind of the MO during 5D's, right? "A character gets important? Give 'em a generic dragon."

@@NeroCM I think Konami might have been more afraid that people could revive Hundred Eyes with Infernity Launcher or Necromancer because that would create good card advantage since unlike Infernity Doom Dragon, Hundred Eyes has a good effect for making boards. Also infernities already have so many summon loops that being able to resurrect hundred eyes would make there turn last even longer

Dark Diviner gives me hope, but also makes me sad. The true weakness of mill decks isn't JUST that Graveyard setup helps the opponent (although that does compound their real problem). Their problem is that all they can do is mill, and suck at everything else. Needle Worm is the prime example of this. There is no better milling card in the game. It just mills 5 cards from the top of your opponent's deck, just like that. And that's it. It does not do anything else. And even if you had three of them set at once, and your opponent attacked all of them, that would not be enough to deck them out. Therefore, mill decks try to play stall cards and life point gain cards, none of which mill your opponent, in an attempt to help them last long enough to mill their opponent. Iron Chain decks were the first real attempt at fixing this, where they tried cards like Iron Chain Snake and Iron Chain Dragon, cards that milled the opponent down but had other effects, too. These cards did not do very well with mill decks. But Dark Diviner shows that there is a way: Dark Diviner isn't something that mills the opponent as well as does something else for you, no. It is a card that lets you clash into your opponent's monsters, usually destroy them, and also mill your opponent. It gains you field advantage while also milling the opponent. And THAT is how a Mill Card should be designed. If they could design more mill cards like that, I think that Mill Decks might actually be a decent performing rogue deck. But it also upsets me because it has been a decade, and I have not seen any other cards like Dark Diviner.

Honestly 100 eyes dragon was my favorite dragon synchro from use in gameplay and artwork. It’s rare for a card to be able to copy cards effects and I honestly love how good it synergizes with the infirnity archetype. Plus the artwork just looks really cool in my eyes.

So, fun fact. Bishbaalkin is considered a Dark Synchro monster, and is the only one to actually be summoned in the Dark Synchro method in the actual game; while you aren’t exactly restricted to using a “Dark Tuner”, the methodology is the same: your Level 8 Tuner and Level 8 Non-Tuner Dark Synchro into the Level 0 Bishbaalkin. The card’s banned now but I always found that a cool touch.

You didn't mention Dark Diviner's Anime Effekt. Two things were different: 1) It sent the cards to the GY right after the attack reduction, regardless of whether the monster was destroyed or not. 2) It didn't send 3 cards to the GY but 1 for each 100 ATK the opponent's monster lost

That's true in a sense, although the Xyz monsters that were released later had a rank instead of level so they are not affected by any cards that have anything to do with Level. I think something similar could've been done for the Dark Synchro monsters as their levels would not be detected by any regular cards except maybe cards that are part of their archetype and state negative level in specific. What you mentioned there is basically sounds like an anime rule.

Dark One hundred eyed dragon is great in tag force games because there's an anime continuous trap that lets you summon a synchro from extra deck in def and its effects negated, so the ai gotta beat over 2500 def monster and if it does you get to add any card from your deck.

There are some ways to properly introduce Dark Tuners and Dark Synchros to the TCG: 1, Alter their summoning conditions. The original Dark Synchros required exactly 1 non-Tuner of a specific type minus 1 Dark Tuner. If we change that to something like "1 Dark Tuner - 1+ non-Tuner monsters" or vice-versa then they would be slightly more playable. 2, Make it clear that Dark Tuners and Dark Synchros are a subtype of regular Tuners and Synchros respectively. Since Greiger/Bommer drew a card by the effect of "Dark Sea Rescue" after using it and "Dark Tuner - Doom Submarine" to Dark Synchro Summon "Dark Flattop", it hinted that Dark Synchros are always treated as Synchros and can benefit from generic Synchro support so Tuners and Dark Tuners should also recieve the same treatment. 3, We need more actual Dark Tuners like "Dark Tuner - Doom Submarine" that can Special Summon themselves, especially ones can can manipulate Levels and alter Types. 4, Since Dark Synchro monsters are harder to Synchro Summon, given their unique summoning conditions, they should have slightly better effects when compared to Synchro monsters with generic Synchro Materials like "Borreload Savage Dragon" in order to make them worth the effort to summon. 5, Either make their regular Levels permanent or let them keep their Negative Levels provided that Negative Levels are NOT treated as regular Levels, similar to how Xyz monsters have Ranks and Link monsters have Link Ratings. I believe that the real reason why Dark Synchros weren't made into an actual Summoning Method was because their original Negative Levels would cause all sorts of unnecessary and confusing rulings regarding cards and effects that involve Levels. 6, There should be a ruling stating that while it is impossible for regular Tuners, even DARK Tuners to be used for a Dark Synchro Summon, Dark Tuners should be usable for a regular Synchro Summon since they are also treated as regular Tuners. 7, The original Dark Tuners had "Dark Tuner" included in their names. They have the potential to become either an actual archetype or an engine like "Invoked", "Kaiju" or "Sky Striker". 8. Since the current metagame emphasizes the Extra Deck, it would be interesting to see a Fusion/Synchro Dark Tuner.

Well this takes me back, I've actually used Fitzgerald years ago back in an ojama syncrho/xyz deck. I'd imagine this was near the start of the xyz era and while ojamas are by no means meta they did create a decent field presence as fodder. Junk synchron made for an easy fitz, which was honestly just good stats for being a lv5 synchro and didn't get stats ruined by Ojama Country. Usually a lv7 synchro or multiple Gachi Gachi would be preferable, but it was decent enough still to use.

It is the year 2022, and I really hope that on the "15" anniversary of Yugioh 5Ds they will release this mechanic to the physical game both in TCG and OCG, hope is the last thing that is lost, we already had the ursartic archetype, but they did not succeed give him that "mechanics" to finally open the doors to "dark synchro", please KONAMI adding this summoning method would not affect the current game much. Dark synchro are similar to those old vanilla fusion. Too weak and materials don’t connect to the monsters themselves. EX: Frozen Fitzgerald is a Water Fiend, but require 1 Dark Tuner and 1+ Non-tuner Beast Monster(s).

That ruling actually makes sense. If they were just milled and sent to the grave they did not really "lived". If they did not even lived you can't revive them.

thing is, that's not what's actually preventing you from reviving them ( otherwise it would apply to all monsters, not just nomi ones ) the thing that's preventing you from reviving them is the monster's summoning condition ... which is supposedly being ignored

@@hi-i-am-atan What's being ignored is the summoning condition printed in the card, not the games' rules on Nomi and Semi-Nomi monsters. It's the same reason you can't mill a fusion/synchro/xyz/link directly from the ED then revive it with Monster Reborn, they weren't properly fusion/synchro/xyz/link summoned first.

@@mateusrp1994 with extra deck monsters, though, their summoning "condition" _is_ an explicit game rule and isn't actually a summoning condition written on the card. with ritual monsters that isn't the case, but also that card text is basically just redundant reminder text anyway nomis, though? the entire reason why you can't special summon them is because of the summoning condition. it's also why you can't normal summon or set them. if you took a nomi monster and removed its summoning conditions, you would be able to special summon it from the grave even if it retained its special summon procedure, since ... it no longer has a summoning condition restricting you from doing so it's just a nonsense ruling that doesn't do much more than making bad monsters worse

@@hi-i-am-atan Nomis and Special Summon-only monsters are the same thing. Extra Deck monsters are Special Summon monsters. Some Extra Deck monsters are Nomis too. The Rulebook says that all Special Summon-only monsters (nomis included) cannot be Special Summoned from GY or from banished without being properly Summoned first, even if it ignores Summoning conditions. This is a *hard rule* in the Rulebook, not some off-hand ruling. I don't see the point of your statement. Also, if you could Summon Nomis from the GY ignoring conditions, Holacite the Creator of Light would never be Summoned properly, because why would you Tribute all 3 god cards when you could just Foolish Burial Holacite and ignore conditions reborn her to instantly win the Duel?

Hundred Eyes Dragon wasn't really nerfed they just worded it to the way it was played in the 5D's anime. Yes it can't copy more then one dark monster but in the anime kalin only used it to copy and use one dark monster at a time, and he only used it to search for earthbound immoral ccapac apu, so it sounds like the printed version adds up to the way it was played!

The card i used the most when i was at grade school was Frozen Fitzgerald, along with Number 57. Let's say that... Fitzgerald saved me a lot. Also... Wasn't Ultimaya Tzolkin(and its evolution of course) a Dark Synchro?

change dark tuner for regular tuner monsters, but the level of your tuner monster is subtract from the non tuner monsters (LV4 tuner - LV9 non tuner = LV5 dark synchro) or ( LV5 tuner - LV1 non tuner = LV4 dark synchro)

Arachnid is dope. Symphonics can get it out if you plan around it. And I think trap monsters in duel links specifically can pull it off if you run the type changer ones.

Yes. In the anime though, "Dark Tuner" was actually an archetype of high Level Tuners that _happen_ to be Dark attribute; used exclusively to perform Dark Synchro Summons.

If I dump SKY FIRE with foolish I should be able to revive it with flattop because it says "ignoring its summoning conditions" This ruling cannot be this way because then you could dump SPYRAL Sleeper, Ultimate Conductor Tyranno, that BLS, any ritual monster, Levianeer, any extra deck monster, etc. and then just reborn it. That is crazy.

Flying Fortress Skyfire is my favorite Yu-Gi-Oh card in the game. So I used Dark Flattop pretty often. And as a kid, I really did think i could "ignore the summoning conditions" so i just discarded Skyfire and revived it with Flattop.

Dark Tuners (not DARK-attribute Tuners) should be a monster type that subtracts its level from Non-Tuner monster when used for a Synchro Summon. Dark Tuners also still fulfil the Tuner monster requirement for regular Synchro monsters, so you could Synchro summon a Level 4 Synchro with a Level 6 non-Tuner and a Level 2 Dark Tuner. Also Dark Tuners can treat Xyz monster Ranks as negative Levels to Synchro Summon Dark Synchro monsters, so a Rank 4 Xyz and a Level 2 Dark Tuner can Synchro Summon a Level -6 Dark Synchro

I remember in Reverse of Arcadia (the 2009 DS game), I played an insect deck and it bothered me to no end that the game literally did not have a Dark Attribute Insect-type tuner, meaning I was forced to play Krebons. Infernity Beetle unfortunately wouldn't become available until the year after the game was released, which is to this day one of only 2 Dark Insect-Type Tuners. I've played a bit with the Inti/Quila deck in Master Duel. It's not good by any means, but it's a lot of fun once you've set up the cycle, and having access to any generic rank 8 or 6 Synchro in the game without using your normal summon is also really nice, even if it takes a discard to do so.

Honestly, my least favorite thing about Fitzgerald is that it requires a dark tuner and a beast non tuner. Now I'm jumping through weird hoops to summon it as opposed to just splashing it into a deck that happens to have DARK monsters by just including a DARK tuner (I know this sounds like a dumb problem but I mostly like playing random fun decks irl and Fitzgerald is my favorite of the dark synchros because its based on ice).

I have summoned SKY FIRE properly a few times... but the high level of difficulty in getting pieces where they belong does mean that I only succeeded because I play against myself. I love bomber guys deck idea but it simply cannot shave LP quickly enough to win.

Yo Frozen Fitzgerald back pre Librarian wasn’t too bad in plant synchro Junk Synchron + Ryko made it and it was 2500 ATK so bigger than Catastor, not FOR SURE a staple but VERY much a viable option for the deck.

Frozen Fitzgerald being level 5 also has the same advantage as Dark Diviner, but the only issue is that you'd kind of be needing to play a beast deck that plays level 2 monsters to summon with Junk Synchron. So, not the most convenient thing ever, but it's an advantage that Frozen Fitzgerald has over Zeman the Ape King and Underground Arachnid, and considering Junk Synchron is more convenient to use than Supay, it's kind of an advantage over the Sun/Moon dragon cards too.

Frozen Fitzgerald was something I found really fun in Ojamas. Summon Junk Synchron to get back an Ojama, tune it to the Ojama and make Fitz. When it's destroyed, dump a vanilla Ojama for tri-wight plays later or Ojamagic for massive card advantage.

I used to play Underground Arachnid too. Summon Labradorite Dragon , Use effect off Level Eater on grave, summon Underground Arachnid, steal monster, Silent Doom from hand on Labradorite Dragon, recycle the combo and you can easily bring 3 Undreground Arachnid in the same turn. Labradorite Dragon was a crazy card back then for dark synchros.
