HOW BUBBLE GUM STOPS HYDRAULIC OIL LEAKS. It's gross, actually.

Skip to 4:20 for bubble gum seal test. Bubble gum engineering actually works! I'll demonstrate how to use gum to fix high pressure hydraulic leaks. We'll also explore how oil seals and bubble gum share some of the same ingredients. This comes as a surprise to most people, so it's a great way to win free beers.

Hey AvE, Over here in the Outback Australia we use chewy gum to fix holed fuel tanks, if you're bouncing your fuel tank over sharp rocks in the middle of nowhere and get a hole you get the mate/missus to put his/her finger over the hole while you chew up some gum then real quick stick the gum in the hole, the gas sets the gum rock hard in seconds and seals your tank so you can go a few hundred more miles to get home. It works best if you apply heaps of pressure so the gum mushrooms inside the tank and flattens outside before it sets, then it wont move either way in the hole. I've heard it works the same on oil pan of your motor too, but I've never tried it, also don't know if it works for diesel. BTW Where did you pick up the chooch'n word, you're the second person I've come across who uses it? Regards

This is good info especially for emergency fixes of expensive Honda power steering line and pump orings. Alot of those you have to order off ebay, Honda, or grab a sloppy seconds oring at the junkyard. Looked up pressures and a 2006 civic's pump runs at 213 psi in good shape. I will do some of my own tests on this soon and hopefully make a video of it in action. The bubble gum used in AvE's video was Bubbilcious brand if anyone was curious.

You might find it interesting or perhaps even helpful to know that gum base is present in higher portion in sugarless gum than in ordinary chewing gum and that bubble gum has even less. Gum base may also be acquired in pure form from a number of different producers and a market exists for makers of gum products who lack the facility to make gum base. Gum base is a mixture of a variety of materials such as gum arabic, guar gum, various resins, rosins and esthers of a plethora of trees and plants, that form the base for any of the various chewing gums. It is usually a proprietary blend because of the myriad possible materials which can be used to produce the substance means that those combinations with mild or desirable flavors and textures provide a market advantage. Each having various qualities and flavors. They are most likely kept proprietary to prevent competitors from matching specific recipes and reducing the market advantage of the product line. Anyone who has known someone with their own proprietary stew or pie recipe is familiar with this practice. Additionally, there are some quite strange materials which make the list of possible ingredients, and some would bring largely displaced concerns which are difficult or impossible to assuage irrespespective of the veracity of the concerns, and would represent an enormous pain in the proverbial keister if an angry mob of mal-informed scientifically illiterate nabobs were to conglomerate into a critical mass of sign waving prognosticatory slogan wielding jibbering jabbering intent on chaining themselves to something until the things that they cannot comprehend, do not understand, and refuse to become educated about cease.

Just gotta say, on the original o-ring, the little tiny bit of leakage... Yeah, place I used to work wouldn't even look at it. We didn't look at a leak unless it was over a drip every minute, maybe 2. We also went through a big white tub of hydraulic oil every 2 weeks I think.

Used this trick to patch up oil lines, fuel lines, etc in the field. Works surprisingly well. Even used it to patch up a leaky brake fitting. Was good enough to get me home, then back to work... Until I wrapped her around a tree 3 months later (too much throttle, the brakes worked fine when we rolled it off the rollback).
