Curlyfriesjosh pretty much, I mean nowadays they rated for small caliber rounds unlike the old helmets. The newest helmet can stop up to a 5.56 or .308 round at close range. But let’s be honest, even if it stops the round the kinetic energy will kill you
@spydertactical

Helmets aren't meant for bullets mostly shrap metal and bumping your head. The cavlar is strong enough to stop them by nature but main focus is to stop blunt trauma or shrap.
@mutecanvas3509
@mutecanvas3509 4 жыл бұрын
@@WarInHD they CANNOT stop 5.56 or .308 bro but they do VASTLY increase survivability by making it so that the bullets have a high chance of ricochet or by making the shooter misplace a shot so it zips through the very top or very sides (not stopping it at all but preventing it from cracking brain matter.) Nice try though

As I recall from my military upbringing, officer's brat, helmets were designed to handle debris and shrapnel from artillery/mortar rounds and not for direct fire. Put the helmets in a 15' circle and set a grenade off, in the middle, and see how they perform.

those steel helmets were meant to be shrapnel proof and resistant/proof to pistol caliber rounds from pistols at 15 to 20 yards. the added velocity from the 10inch barrel on the uzi vs a standard 4-5inch barrel on most full size pistols from that would've aided in penetration. also yes there was 9mm pistols during ww1/2 the luger-1908, browning high power-1935, walther p38-1938

My only advice might be to pay particular attention to those which took the most damage. By design you want the helmet to absorb or distribute the energy across the surface of the entire helmet. Some energy is going to absorbed by the individual wearing the helmet, no way around it, but outward observable damage to a helmet does not alway indicate the effectiveness of the helmet.

Those helmets were really meant to just keep shrapnel and falling debris from easily taking out a soldier in the head, just like the flack jacket, not gonna take a direct hit good. Also if those helmets had a head in them, the round has a better chance of going through cause it's gonna take ALL the inertia and not just go flying.

I have worked with guys that use kevlar for all sorts of weird purposes. EG supersonic parachutes etc. One of them thinks that the kevlar they used in the 50's was a lot weaker because they had not got anywhere close to good bonding techniques to glue the layers together. They had also not workedout the best weaves for different purposes or the best shaping techniques. Add that lot together anf you have 1/3 the stopping power we have now.

In WWII Canada used and still uses the Browning High Power chambered in 9mm (As far as I know they are looking to replace them, they are looking at a glock chambered in .40), I believe the German Luger pistols were also chambered for 9mm. We also used the British STEN guns in 9mm in WWII

I’ve shot tens of thousands of rounds of various calibers. I can totally feel his frustration with the .45, because I always shoot that pistol low. I’m more accurate with a 10mm, than a .45. I flinch more with a .45 than a 10, probably because with a 10, I expect it kick so hard; yet with the .45, it still gets me everytime.

Steel helmets varied a lot during WW2 and beyond because of the type of steel used. For example, French Adrian Helmets from WW1 and WW2 were made of thin mild steel, and were just in general... not very protective, having a tendency to let high velocity artillery shell fragments go through. But American M1 Helmets were made out of high quality manganese steel, which had a tendency to stop lower velocity 9 millimeter. Russian SSH helmets from the era were also notoriously protective, where as German Stahlhelms uh... weren't. So much for the superior quality of 'German steel'
