Incredible ending joke. The original stop-motion show looks so charming compared to the ugly 3D film. The little Dougal is precious.

Why do so many British things get completely remade and butchered for the US? Does this happen the other way round and I just haven't noticed? I know we usually just get the originals, seems odd it doesn't happen as much the other way.

I wouldn't say Butch Hartman was entirely responsible for this. The Weinsteins definitely played a big part in this debacle, not helped by their infamous track record with animation, and if there were other writers on board, they would have to share some of the blame. Though if there's any consolation in this, it's that the Weinsteins, especially Harvey, will not be involved with anything film related for a long time, if ever again.
@josephcopper29662 жыл бұрын
Yeah, Weinstein definitely has room to be blamed also. Not only did he kill this film, but he also butchered The Thief and the Cobbler. He almost ruined Princess Mononoke too, but was stopped because the producer, Toshio Suzuki, sent Weinstein a katana and the words “No Cuts.” written on a note.

I'm actually gonna take Ol' Butch's word as the truth(Or at least closer to the truth than what LS Mark thought) when he says that a majority of his script had been re-rewritten. Its not that I think he is blameless here, its just that for once there are people in the picture who are objectively *worse* than he is, and its extremely Weinstein-y to do something like that(IE: Hiring someone to rewrite the script, then hiring someone ELSE to rewrite THAT script, leading to an enormous loss of both money and time.)

When I watched Doogal I always felt like the dialogue that I was hearing wasn’t native to the film. The scene with the skeletons as well as the moose character make it extremely obvious that something is _off._ The moose character gestures as if he should be entirely nonverbal, none of the main cast directly responds to him, and yet the character can’t seem to _shut up._ The same is true with the skeletons who don’t seem as though they would have any spoken lines, and yet they’re going on and _on_ about random nonsense. Seeing the original version I was instantly like “Oh so I was right. These characters weren’t meant to talk.” I have no earthly idea why they added dialogue for these characters either… maybe they just felt that the film was too boring if you weren’t familiar with The Magic Roundabout? Whatever the case, despite not really knowing much about the source material or having many feelings about it, it just feels so _weird_ to dub over a film as if it’s just a background for someone’s standup comedy routine.

I grew up on reruns of the original series on Cartoon Network, so by the time the CG movie came out, I (along with my parents, who also grew up on it in the '70s) was the target audience for it. It was the first time I ever recall something inducing my nostalgia. Looking back, it's really nothing special, one of those films where either you're already familiar with these characters or it's all nonsense, but I still have a soft spot for it. Also, the CG film's directors ran their own stop-motion studio and their previous feature was a dark, Lynchian adaptation of Tom Thumb, where Tom is a lab-grown homunculus and his father is a drunkard who gets killed in a street brawl. The whole thing is available online and it's amazing.
