Just thought I would share my experience with my Ax5 transmission in my 1995 2.5 . Soon after I bought it , the transmission began shifting very hard . I drained the oil and smelled heavily of sulfur, probably GL5 . I went to synthetic 10w30 and shifting problems immediately improved , but started in again 5k miles later . When I drained the oil out of the transmission, it was completely broken down, actually gold in color. I only had more synthetic 10w30 on hand , so I put that in again , but in another 5k miles when I drain it out, I’ll have mt90 on hand to put back in !

I tried synthetic motor oil and it clashed especially in second. The more slippery synthetic didn’t spin the synchronizers up as well. Regular oil worked better. Mt90 was better yet. I wonder if MTL would be better in cooler climates

A lot of what you use is vehicle specific. My 03 Tacoma requires Gl-3 or Gl-4, while my 19 Subaru requires an oil that meets GL-5 specs since it shares the oil with the front differential

I doubt many people change transmission fluid every 2yrs. My wife's 2006 Audi TT is not meant to be changed as it's for life according to Audi. Well car is on 93k miles & never been changed. The gear change is the best gearbox I've ever used. Slick & precise with no noises.

Thx for the video. I have a ax15 sitting until I’m ready to throw it into my CJ. My question is, as it’s stored, should there be gear oil in it or not? TIA

Makes sense to me. Can you use that stuff in your axles to? It's probably time to change all drive train oils...
@JeepSolid7 жыл бұрын
+Mark Wade no need to use the speedy stuff in differential. Depending what you have, a Dana 30 standard diff just calls for 75w-90 gl5. It's ok to use the gl5 there as it doesn't have the brass like tranny does.

on their website, it comes up as not recommended for AX15, do you know why?
@JeepSolid6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's an alternate use. Not listed as ax15 fluid, but Jeep owners have been using it for years with great success.

Hi, thanks for your videos! For the AX15, have you heard anything about Liqui Moly? Their 75W-80 is about the only gear oil I can find still available with the GL3 designation. At $15-$18 per liter, it’s also pricey but not more than the Redline.

Hi, Dale. I have a Jeep Comanche 1988 2.5L 2wd base model and I think I have AX-4 transmission has only 4 gears. I did some researched and MT-90 manual transmission fluid is a best fit for this ? Just want to double check with you. Thanks in advance!

I notice that a lot of people on the Jeep forums say to use: Valvoline - Manual Transmission Fluid Part # SYNCHROMESH Line: VAL $9.69 Each How would you compare it to the Red Line MT-90 gear oil I really like your videos, keep up the great work. Thanks

+Doug Harlow Thanks! I still prefer Red Line. Offers great protection.

I just installed a lift on my yj. This morning the tranny was poping out of 2nd and 4th. The forums say it might just be the shifter boot, but the problem went away when I drove it later in the day. Maybe just because it was colder in the morning? Are my synchros gone? I changed the fluid 500 miles ago. Anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.
@JeepSolid7 жыл бұрын
+Dhruv Luhar using a different oil may help alleviate the problem. Maybe something thinner? What's in it Now? If there's bigger issue, obviously thinner oil won't fix it, but May buy some time.

It's the actual teeth on the gear that are gone if it pops out of gear

I just purchased the MT90 and my 92 YJ will finally get the non synchro eating oil. BTW, I purchased the latest Haynes manual on Jeeps and they still have the specs wrong as GL 5!

Yeah, not sure why they don't update.

I haven't been keeping up but how'd you get the engine so clean? Thanks for sharing about oils NOT to use in transmission.
@JeepSolid6 жыл бұрын
Easiest way for me is to take it to do it yourself car wash. I bring a few plastic bags to cover key electrical items, then wash engine...

What about penzoil synchromesh?
@BLtheP6 жыл бұрын
Poor internet advice will tell you synchromesh is the right stuff. It isn't. Only people who haven't ever tried Redline would agree that it is the best. Redline works the best and most closely matches Aisin-Warner's strict 75W90 GL4 specification.

If you go to the Redline website, it doesn't even list an AX-15 as a choice for use with their MT-90 GL4 product. AX-5 yes, but not the 15. Vehicle I entered via the redline website was a 98 Jeep Wrangler Sahara, 4.0 inline 6. Am I missing something?
@JeepSolid6 жыл бұрын
No. I don't think MT-90 is listed on their site for the ax 15. A lot of Jeep guys use it though. A quick Jeep Forum search will give you a lot of good info on it.

The question for me now is redline mt-90 or royal purple?

You can't compare 10w30 to a mt90 oil and say one goes into the engine lasts shorter than a gearbox.
@JeepSolid6 жыл бұрын
People use both in their transmission. Research I've seen shows the MT-90 lasting longer than conventional oil in the transmission. I'm just showing people that.
@kings52235 жыл бұрын
He can when Jeep now says synthetic 10w30 is the manufacturer recommended oil in these transmissions.
