Use RED LINE gear oil. They make GL-4 and is the BEST oil money can buy. I have 5 Toyotas 4 are 4x4 and 1 is a Corolla/Sprinter/Prizm Manual trans at 300K miles. Red-line oil made the shifting in the Corolla as equivalent to my 21 Taco manual. All diffs and transfer cases I use Valvoline 75W-80. Use Aluminum crush washers for Gear and Transfer case. Metal washer for diffs (but aluminum works for diffs as well). Excellent video!

Hello, I have a 2018 Model Auris 1.33 Gasoline vehicle with 6-Speed Manual Transmission. The price of 2.4 (3) liter Toyota 75W90 is $200 in my country. Will there be a problem if I use Liqui Moly MTF5200 75W80, which provides GL-4 and costs $60 for 3 liters? Have you changed the transmission oil of your vehicle? What brand of product did you use? Thanks in advance.

I have tried just about every Gear Lube and MT fluid that can be purchased in the USA or Europe on my 2003 Toyota Camry with manual transmission. Redline has be the best by far. I like to put in 1 quart of Red Line MTL and the rest MT-90. I live in Michigan and it gives slightly better could weather performance when it drops down super cold like -25. MT-90 works great too or MT-85 which I am not sure Red Line makes any more. Tested all of them with Used Oil Analysis and based on shift fill cold and hot and how long the cold shift performance lasted. If you want the best cold and hot shifting with the least amount of wear nothing worked better for me than Red Line "MT" line of GL-4 lubricants. Their power steering fluid is the best I have used as well. I can also recommend their CV-2 grease.

@@wiscowalleye7954 It's recommended to change the fluid every 30K NOT for the fluid, but for metal material that naturally flakes off with every shift. This metal floats around the case and eventually works its way into all of the bearings, reducing their lifespan. Changing the fluid dumps the metal particles floating around the trans. Be sure to change it more often to reduce bearing wear.

For $20 a year you can get it at wholesale price and save or like you no cost at all get wholesale pricing and good intransitives on the volume. Best thing I like about Amsoil they use more detergents that help it last longer while in normal use. Thanks for the explanation on the 2 versions. Silly how Toyota at times haven't updated their internals like this. Lets not talk about the 3G issues they screwed up on in a major way.

Weird, KZbin is glitching out on me so forgive a potential double post. But yes, it does appear your customer accidentally purchased the wrong oil. The correct one for the Manual Transmission in the 3rd gen Tacoma has the product code: MTGPK-EA This specifically is GL-4 compatible (had to re-read my label's as I almost had a heart attack lol) Also silly question, when replacing the fluids in the Diffs/T-Case/Transmission do you 100% of the time replace the washers (there's a few different kinds)? T-Case: 90430A0003 x2 Front Diff: 1215710010 x1 & 9043024003 x1 Rear Diff: 1215710010 x2 Just curious if you happen to of run across any failures or leaks due to people not replacing these during the oil changes. And of all the people to ask, you would be the one :). Thanks for the awesome video!

Initially I had some difficulty finding 90wGL-5 for the differential on my '98 LS400. So I called Lexus of N. America and asked whether multiviscosity oil was acceptable. The person who answered didn't know but said she would call back. The reply was that only single viscosity was to be used. I checked the web site of one of the major makers of multiviscosity oils and they, too, said that theirs should not be used when single viscosity was required. Fortunately Amazon sold Miller's 90w GL-5 at a reasonable price. In retrospect I almost wish I hadn't changed the oil even at 140K. The old fluid looked almost like new and there was no debris on the magnet. But now I don't have to worry about it. At 23.5 yo, still my daily driver and happy that it is!

First let me say I love your channel. I upvote many of your videos and am subscribed as well. Here I have to disagree with you. I have been using Amsoil for over 20 years. I used to own cabs and limos in Chicago and ran Amsoil in all of them. Currently I am running Amsoil in several personal vehicles as well as a lawn tractor. If it needs lubricants I use Amsoil. Just a couple of examples. I bought a 2015 Honda Pilot, new. They recommend changing Transmission Fluid every 35k or so. At 35k I replaced the original with Amsoil Trans fluid. Recently at about 125k I changed it for the second time. The fluid looked as new as the day I put it in. On my 2015 Prius V, I should have changed it sooner than the 5 years and 80k miles and not waited for the dealer to tell me to change it. The fluid was very dirty. I replaced it with Amsoil WS ATF after flushing it with twice with 8 quarts of Toyota WS. Example 2: I had a Chevy Astro Van I bought used with 120k on it. They had changed the transmission at 87k. The first thing I did was put Amsoil in the engine, Trans and Diff. When I sold the van a few years later with over 300k It was still running strong. I changed the Trans and diff fluid after 100k, the oil and filter every 25k. I urge you to read up on Amsoil and their extended drain intervals. It is cheaper for people who drive a lot and cheap insurance for people who drive a little. They have the best base stocks and additive packages in the business. Caveat. I am a dealer but I'm more a believer. For people who don't do their own MX and Uber or cab drivers those extended drain intervals are money in the bank. Keep up the good work and I look forward to more videos. I just bought the 2022 Avalon Nightshade and followed your video and changed out the courtesy lights to LED.

You’re exactly right sir. I had a manual Mitsu Eclipse GSX and it required GL4 in the trans. And yes it’s hard to find GL4. I ended up using BG Syncroshift for a while which worked ok. But later tried Redline (can’t remember the type) for manual transmissions which was made to use where a GL4 was called. This was an improvement over the BG. What you put in the manual gearbox definitely makes a difference on how it shifts.

Please note that Amsoil SVG 75w90 in the data sheet specifies: “Recommended for use in differentials, manual transmissions and other gear applications requiring any of the following specifications: API GL-5, MT-1, MIL-PRF-2105E, Dana SHAES 234 (Formerly Eaton PS-037), Mack GO-J, or other GL-5 based specifications from vehicle manufacturers, including Ford*, GM* and Chrysler*. Can also be used in axles where an API GL-4 lubricant is recommended” The bottle is lacking the full information from the data sheet. It does not list transmissions where GL4 is required just axles. Thank you for posting this video. It is important to go over the specs of each product.

Your channel is always current, up-to-date, relevant, and positive. No outdated hypotheses from yesteryear, or click-bait, or threats to quit your channel. We have an 07 V6 4runner because of your advice, and it's been exactly as you predicted. Because we can fully count on the 4runner, our other car is allowed to be the opposite: a used, RWD, range-extended EV, an i3REx. The i3 has been shockingly reliable for modern German, and costs only $5 energy to cover 200 miles (4runner would be $40 here in Seattle area). We like how you advocate proven cars and engines, but you're still open to new tech.

Very informative thank you! I have a 09 Scion TC with 38k original miles. I recently serviced the manual transmission with Valvoline Full Synthetic 75W-90. According to the Scion manual the factory recommends GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil. What is your opinion on the usage of a GL-5 gear oil with the E350 Toyota transmission? Before watching this video I wanted to try the Amsoil 75W-90 however now I'm not so sure.

The owner's manual for my '09 Tacoma states..."Manual transmission, Recommended gear oil type, Gear oil API GL-4 or GL-5." I used GL-5 when I changed the transmission fluid, 7 years and 6,500 miles ago. It has become a second vehicle and is driven only occasionally now. Do your admonissions about GL-5 apply or was it different in '09? Should I change to GL-4? I see a few others in the comments that have the same GL-4 or GL-5 recommendations in their owner's manuals.

This man is correct. GL5 is not the best oil for any manual transmission with copper or brass. GL5 contains sulfur. There are stabilizers in it but they'll break down. The rear differential has hypoid gears. It needs the high pressure additives of GL5. They used lead back in the day.

Thank you for this explanation! I changed out all of the fluids on my '98 4Runner over a year ago, thinking I was good, used 75W-90 GL-5 for the manual trans, both differentials, and the t-case (the owners manual said GL-4 or GL-5 for the manual tranny, so I thought I was solid with that oil). Then I noticed some folks on Facebook strongly recommending MT-90/GL-4 for manual trans (and mentioning the harm that GL-5 could do to the syncros). I just did a drain and refill with the Redline MT-90 GL-4. I called Redline and confirmed this, and they also said it wouldn't be a bad idea to also put MT-90 in the transfer case (since the oil in the tranny and t-case could potentially cross over if there was ever a leak). So I changed out the t-case to MT-90 also. Hopefully I'm good to go now. I don't want to replace that transmission!

@@randylee2549 I agree, the info on this video is outdated, the aggressive additive in the GL5 has been long replaced and this MT1 rating is the important classification here. And actually I just checked, my 1991 Toyota Hiace, that has the same drivetrain (and gearbox) than a 1st gen Tacoma, the owner manual recommends "SAE 75W90 API GL-4 or GL-5" for the manual transmission. So pretty sure that the Tacoma, that was released in 1995, the owner manual doesn't recommend GL3.

Because I was getting ready to change my 2012 Toyota Tacoma manual transmission fluid and… I have the wrong oil! It’s got the GL5 additive, But it also says it works in “ all non-synchronized manual transmissions where GL-4 is specified …” 😳🙈😱 I think I saw the GL4 and just bought it. “NON-SYNCHRONIZED “ ! Huh? I’m not sure because it’s been so long since I bought the fluid and obviously I didn’t do enough KZbin tutorials to make an informed purchase. But now I’ve found you Car Nut and my searching is partially over. Now where is my receipt? 🤔 … and where did you find GL-4???? 🤷🏼‍♂️🙈

On my European Toyota Yaris 1st Gen, the manual states for 75w90 and says that GL-4 or GL-5 can be used. So Motul on their website recommends their GL-4/GL-5 75w90 and they clearly say that it is compatible also with Synchromesh gearboxes. So, that is what I changed to the last time I changed my oil and no problems so far. I guess, if it was dangerous for the trans, Toyota would not include both specifications on their manual 🤷🏻

@MrRedHotChiliMan i would first check online or if you have a service manual for your truck to verify it is actually GL5. First, Ahmed, THANK YOU for your honest and generous help to us DIY weekend mechanics and our working families. You and Mrs. Car Care are really making a BIG difference in my family. My Question: I have 224K on a 2004 Corolla Matrix manual 5 speed. There has been GL-5 fluid in the trans for 16 years (changed 2 times from original now). GL-5 was recommended by Haynes shop manual. Gears 2 & 3 are starting to make rattle sounds. Toyota says $6,300 to replace - but I'm not taking that path yet. Can changing to GL-4 fluid help delay the inevitable? The car drives VERY smoothly otherwise. I also just DIY'd new OEM battery, valve cover gasket and denso radiator. Plenty of rust on the rocker panels (New England). May I have your best suggestion please? Thank you, John And to you and your family: Num6:24, The LORD bless you and keep you; The LORD make His face shine upon you, And be gracious to you; The LORD lift up His countenance upon you, And give you peace!

The Safety Data Sheet of the Amsoil 100% synthetic 75W-90 Severe Gear Oil reveals it has a relatively-high Flash Point (FP) of 420.8° F and a relatively-low Pour Point (PP) of -45.4° F. Looking up the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) of Redline Gear Oil, I see that they confusingly grouped all 6 of their gear oils (ranging from 75W-85 up to 80W-140) in the same individual SDS listing, which one would reasonably expect the stats of each one individually would be different. In any event, SDS reveals the line of Redline Gear Oils to have a FP of 329° F (91° F lower than Amsoil) and a PP of -40° F (Amsoil is an additional 5.4° F lower in the exteme cold temperatures). Another individual SDS of Redline 75W-90 Gear Oil reveals it has a FP of 298 °F, with yet another SDS of Redline 75W-90 Gear Oil showing a FP of 266 °F, but neither SDS of this 75W-90 Gear Oil displayed a Pour Point! What? The moment I changed both of my differentials in my Subaru Tribeca with the Amsoil Severe Gear Oil (after draining the factory-filled gear oil at 30k+ miles), I noticed immediate performance by realizing that the power delivered to the four wheels was less restricted. If you are wondering why a Subaru owner like me is following the TCCN Channel, my other vehicle is a Toyota Camry XLE Hybrid. Besides, Ahmed is a fantastic college-professor and he is a friend of mine. His shop performed periodic maintenance on my Camry over the past year. I am an extremely-satisfied customer of his shop in terms of the quality of workmanship, more than reasonable pricing and relatively-low wait times! When an oil company advertises their line of products as 100% synthetic, they only contain a combination of PAOs (PolyAlphaOlefins, a Class IV Synthetic) and Esters (Class IV Synthetic) without any hydrocracked petroleum oil (Class III Synthetic), according to Rafe, a former Lubrication Engineer at Mobil, who has a series of KZbin Videos under the channel, "Lubrication Explained." Of course the 100% synthetic Amsoil products contain top-shelve ingredients, including proprietary additives, in addition to the PAOs and Esters.

Yes, I read all about the importance of using manual transmission and transaxle gear oil with a proper API rating. I just pulled out the owner's manual of my 2006 Corolla and 2010 Yaris, just to double-check. This is what I found in the owner's manual: Oil type: Gear oil API GL-4 or GL-5. Recommended oil viscosity: SAE 75W-90. Oil capacity: 5-speed 1.9Liters or 2.0 qt. So according to Toyota, using manual transmission oil API GL-5 is recommended to use on some of their models of vehicles. Despite that, next time before I do an oil change, I will look for API GL-4 oil. No more Motul GEAR 300.
