I've been collecting and using knives since I was a kid. Have recently acquired an Opinel, and have been using a Mora for my camp knife for a few years. This is next on my list of inexpensive quality knives. I'm not sure how Sweden, France, and New Zealand manage to make such good stuff at an affordable price, even after being imported, but I wish that American manufacturers would figure it out. I can't find a Chinese-made Kershaw branded knife for less than 30 bucks, much less 12 to 15. I'm an artist, craftsman, and outdoorsman, and I actually use my knives on a daily basis. I'm not taking a $100 knife on a kayak trip only to give it away to the fishes.

I fell down the rabbit hole; I started looking at Ganzo, for a cheap, high quality pocket folder, ended up picking up a Mora and falling in love with it. I just got one of these and, when you take it apart, there is a second pair of holes for the brass stop pin. This allows you to move the pin so that the tang/opening lever will be completely hidden inside the handle when fully opened. This would eliminate a hotspot when you use the knife for a long time.

My son bought me a zero tolerance hinderer knife for my birthday last year. I had been covering that knife for a year. Within a week I had lost it. I was heart broken. We would walk to a shopping center for lunch that was on the other side of some railroad tracks every day. To get there we had to cut through some brush and a hole in the fence to cross the tracks. So. A week later I decided to bring a machete to clear the brush so we wouldn’t get wet from the over hanging leaves. While I was hacking away at the the Brush my friend spotted a knife hanging from a vine right next to the fence opening. Lol. I was so happy. I found my knife dangling there. So I got pick pocketed by a flowering vine. You are right about those pocket clips. My retribution on that vine was swift. The machete raised some eye brows from the waitress though. 😊

I used to have the same problem losing knives. I also originally in frustration went to a much cheaper knife. I found in time that the main reason I was losing knives, and this will come as a shock to no one, was from laying them down. This happened often as not when using the knife while seated when putting it away was an inconvenience. Like you I found I really don't care for cargo pockets you could get into in a sitting position. Being long time married not needing to impress much of anyone I went to wearing bib coveralls. Not only are they comfy but have an old man chest rig on the "bib". That is now where my minimalist wallet, pen, flashlight and good pocket clip knife ride. Thus not sitting on my wallet in the car and can always access the other items whether I am getting them out or putting them away. Further the back pockets are high enough you don't sit on them if you want to carry something in them. In my case that would be an EDC pouch and or pocket holster. The deep pocket up the leg will carry a small pair of pump pliers and you never know they are there until you need them. Hammer loop is sometimes handy for tools and always handy for hanging them up. And as a bonus the Mora Knife button key hole sheath works on the side flap buttons when I want to carry one. As further insurance though I carry a lay, loan and lose cheap imported knife in my front pocket. Two is one and one is none.

Opanels are such a great backup pocket knife to your normal EDC folder. The small one just disappears in the pocket and they have such a wonderful thin slicey edge... They don't hold edges super great BUT they take a edge very easily and getting them hair splitting sharp is easy with just a few hits on the strop and back to hair whittling. IMHO they aren't a main carry knife (not for me anyhow as they aren't 1 hand deployment and retraction.) but they are a fantastic knife for opening mail, boxes, slicing snack packages and just normal cutting... They are also not a "scary" knife so if someone asks does anyone have a knife I can use and you hand them a small opanel no one will blink twice at it just like a little Case Peanut or small Barlow. Some times your more aggressive looking EDC knifes like my Spydie PM2 or Manix etc will look at it like omg you carry that that's a dangerous knife blah blah blah. So I carry one or two knifes as a back up and it's either a Opanel the small one or a Case Peanut.

I bought the large peasant in blue a few weeks back. Real clean, simple knife for the money. Took it's edge to near razer levels on a set of stones. I'm on a farmstead so when i go outside i just throw it in my leg pocket, doesn't seem to get in the way too much. I'm funny with things, once i find something i like, i tend to stick to it. Peasant mini in blue next, then possibly a large and small in wood trim with the belt pouches as a birthday treat. Svord do some wicked looking fixed blades and if they hold up anything like these folders do, then i may look at them as well. One of my favourite ever knives is my mora companion (without the fancy firelighter built in).... simple, sturdy, cost nothing to buy, and keeps a nice workable edge to it.

As a retired butcher, I have provided for myself and family with my knives. I personally have a small key ring size Opinel . They come in all sizes. The original blade is soft steel. Which you can put an edge on it with any flat rock. I used the American brand Green River a lot at work. As far as Chinese quality control, if it’s anything like the guitar world. They have improved quality as they obviously have noticed it effects sales. Saying that I would stick to brands you know yourself or have good reviews.

Same mechanics as traditional chinese fisherman's knife. Wear using a long neck lanyard to the eye in the blade extension; to gut a fish, grab the handle and push away to swing the blade out with the lanyard tension; to stow the blade, drop the knife and it will close it up as the lanyard bears the weight. Scales of the antiques were often made in the form of a fish.

Being an Aussie, I like to put #$it on kiwis. But tbh, I have much respect for the place and its people. The respect shown for Maori culture is wonderful and seems genuine to me as an outsider. All kiwis love the Haka it seems. Also admired how they took a stand against nuclear powered ships and moved to proportional representation. The national cricket team's conduct is first rate. Hard and fair. No scandals. I saw an interview with an old soldier who said the NZ soldiers were the best. I don't recall the exact detail, but that they combined the best attributes of Aussies and Pommies. If I couldn't live in Australia, it'd be NZ for me.

I have a knife that can't be lost. I often use it to open the seal on a fuel additive that I run in my motorcycle. I first left it on top of the gas pump at a local convenient store and discovered it missing the next day. With nothing to lose I stopped by the next afternoon almost 24 hours later and there was my knife. To shorten the story, I did this 3 more times at the same store and each time my knife was right where I left it. The last time it sat there on top of the pump for 3 days! Either no one else was tall enough to see it on top of the pump or the ones that did figured the owner would return to get it. I still have the knife.
