If the Bible is our authority, it has a lot to say about sin. In fact, when we read it, we come across different types of sin, and in this regard, it is common to hear the idea that "all sins are the same." Is this really so? Phylicia Masonheimer joined me to answer this critical aspect of sin, the struggles it brings, and how a proper understanding of this leads to freedom in Christ.

That passage of "These people will never inherit the kingdom of God" is followed up with "So where some of you, but you were washed, you were justified, you were made righteous." That list of sins is also a list of forgivable sins in Jesus' Name.

Paul is talking about their former identity. Before Christ, their identity was their sin. They were murderers, idolators, etc., but now they have a new identity. Paul is talking about those who do not have a new identity in Christ and aren’t living according to the spirit.

Yes, this brings up the confusion between sin and evil. "Evil" is really just another word for error, according to our celestial overseers. Error and mistakes are also equivalent. "Sin" is when we consciously, intentionally do that which we know to be evil, (and lies do qualify). In a way, the idea of "original sin" is an interesting way of indicating that we are born very imperfect. But people hate it when they're reminded that they're imperfect, but somehow accusing them of being sinners, thru no fault of their own, is okay. It's not our fault we're imperfect. That is the basis for our impossible mission, (should we choose to accept it), which is to become perfect, with God's help. It's worth noting, that God's love for each and every one of us is infinite. While these are just words on a page, and I had read them many times over many years, but one day I had an experience of our Divine Father's love that was phenomenal! I got a small taste of that infinite love, and I get it now. That love doesn't just set our sins aside, it destroys them.

A good break down, but I would add, "Sin is also not doing what God has told you to do." We need to be aware of the tricks of our enemy, and when that falters, ask the Holy Spirit to speak to us when we have forgotten to repent of a sin we have yet to do so. Also to remind us of those lost opportunities to share Jesus, and ask Him to forgive us for that as well.

Hi, I need help in understanding the Gospel. The Gospel says repent and believe in Jesus Christ. So we will only be justified if we repent and believe in Christ. However, what's the difference between repentance at Justification and repentance at sanctification. If I'm not wrong, sister Alisa said that Christians do struggle with habitual sin and if that's the case, one isn't truly repentant and saved right since Romans says that sin shall not have dominion over us? Sorry, I've very confused with the Gospel. Hope someone would help me understand better. I'm a backslidden Christian for a long time and I'm having trouble truly understanding the Gospel. Thanks!

1 Corinthians 10:13 13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. I know this helped me when I was struggling for years with a porn addiction, I finally got serious, investigated the Bible, found evidence developed faith, literally went to the breaking point of my mind, refusing to give in. He answered my prayer. Endure, be faithful, pray earnestly from the heart, read and study his word, memorize it, (reading is not study, but is good and you should) write down questions about what you read, investigate the scriptures for the answers.

If you accept that idolatry is spiritual adultery -- and the worst form of sin because it warps our minds to everything else that comes in our "theological thoughts" -- and you accept that Jesus and his Jewish disciples were NOT idolators but Torah observant Jews, you'll have to come to grips with how Greco-Roman paganism crept in and made the eventual thing we call Christianity something no Jew could ever accept. It is the most amazing story never told -- or never understood -- and should lead to a tremendous rebirth of repentance and love with our ONE TRUE G-D -- the one of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

There may be much more discussion on this topic that is shown, so I may be missing the full context of the discussion. Given the snippet that is shared, the premise your guest begins with seems flawed, or at the least misleading. In hopes that I don’t misrepresent her position, I failed to grasp the importance of repentance. Defining terms like REPENTANCE as it is more directly attributed to our salvation then confession. They unequivocally work harmoniously towards sanctification. The guest seems to imply a more acceptance of sin, on a simple confession without harmonizing scripture that may lead struggling followers to be more comfortable continuing in sin as long as they confess. REPENTANCE is required.

@Dakota Bledsoe Truly appreciate your perspective on the clip. I hope to add clarity to your response, as I believe it’s a simple misunderstanding. Please re-read my comment. Your initial response doesn’t quite grasp what I stated, and I hope not to misrepresent you in any way. Your implying that I separate confession and repentance, when I clearly state that these two requirements must be harmonized. Hopefully that clarifies your first claim that I “forced” a false dichotomy. Secondly, as mentioned in my comment, there may be much more context I am missing from the discussion in its entirety. I did not grasp that she precisely defined repentance in a way that was meaningful to the spectrum of listeners. Elementary understanding and clearly defining terms would edify young believers. One could listen to this clip and be more accepting of the sin that they are “living in,” as just a “process.” While I do agree that sanctification is a process, our call to confess and repent will have an immediate impact on our stance with sin. I also would like to highlight that your last statement, whether purposefully or accidental, presents as you put a false dichotomy “But if there is no confession, there is no repentance.” My position is that these two very important essentials must be harmonized. Repentance is an actionable confession of true change of the heart, spirit, mind and flesh. I sit on the hope that we are at least in agreement on the essentials of the Christian faith, that repentance is required. God bless.

I think the idea that we're ever "separated from God" is a bit misleading. As the spirit fragment of our Divine Father-friend continuously indwells our mind, it is always with us. Thus, in that sense, we are never separate from our Father. On the other hand, from our perspective, when we shut God out of our thoughts, functionally we are psychologically separate from our Father.

Jesus didn't just die to conquer sin but to conquer death which is our just penalty for sin, in fact He bore our sin and died our death as our substitute. And at the same time His righteous life is applied to us who believe in and on Him. That's Paul's point in Romans 5. Do believers struggle with sin? Yes, we may have been declared not guilty by God because of Jesus' death in our place and given Christ's righteous standing before God, yet we walk in flesh on sin saturated soil. However, those who are confessing and repenting and believing in and on Jesus (note it is continual, not one and done) these are indwelt by the Holy Spirit, it is He Who transforms and conforms us to the image of Christ. (Romans 8) Our confession of sin is not a mere listing of our transgressions but an agreeing with God that we do sin (1John 1:9-10) and are sinners from the womb (Isaiah 48:8, true of Israel, true of us) our sin deserves death (Romans 5:12) and God was right in executing Jesus while He bore our sins. (Colossians 2:13-14) God has given us His Spirit and His Word to fight sin. Is all sin the same? Horizontally, no. My speeding, lying about my weight, even my pride affects no person in the world. But all sin is a usurpation of the throne and sovereignty of God. It offends the only Holy Being in Creation. And until we rightly view our rebellion, our joining the murders who spit on the Savior's face, we will fail to give the love and honor to the God Who made us, sustains our next breath and offers salvation from the just judgement He has imposed on all sinners, even those still in the womb.

It wasn't so much Jesus' death that affected our sin status so much as it was his life and what he taught us that had a bearing on that. He taught us that as we forgive, we are forgiven. His death was essentially a pre-requisite to demonstrating the resurrection. (Paul was a little confused by all his Mosaic indoctrination regarding sacrificial animals, that made him think Jesus looked like yet another sacrifice. He was used to the idea of God being a vengeful god, like the olden concepts of Yahweh were, which the Jews thought had to be placated by being willing to part with their best animals. This is in direct conflict with the Master's teaching about God loving us before we even think to ask. Given a choice between believing Jesus and believing Paul, I'm going with what Jesus said.)

At 3:26 be careful how you frame forgiveness as it relates to sin. Forgiveness is not for the benefit of the sinner. It is for the benefit of God. It is THIS misunderstanding that causes people to keep on sinning. They do not fear God, because they think forgiveness is absolution, which it is not. "God forgives" is the most poorly understood and the most poorly taught scripture in the bible. Isaiah 43:25 says: “I, even I, am he who blots out your transgressions, for my own sake, and remembers your sins no more". The key words are for "MY OWN SAKE", not for "YOUR SAKE" as the sinner or abuser. So many people think that God is forgiving the sinner to benefit the sinner, when in fact it is the opposite. God is forgiving the sinner for HIS (God's) own sake so that he doesn't have to carry the burden of the world's sin, which was carried by Jesus on the cross. God even takes it (forgiveness) a step further by saying he will "remember them (sins) no more". And that's why you hear Christians saying "I'm not stressed about sinning, because God will forgive me", thinking that forgiveness will remove the consequences of the sin. No it will not. They have been taught this by the Evangelical churches who leave out the consequence scriptures or change them. God says do not add to or remove from the scriptures. This is how the sinning pastors in evangelical churches teach "forgiveness". These are the false prophet teachers that Jesus spoke of. These pastors teach this in order to get themselves "off the hook" for their own sins. They think that forgiveness gives them the green light to sin again because there will be no consequences. God is only forgiving you for HIS own sake, NOT FOR YOUR SAKE ... that would be absolution. Absolution is "formal release from guilt, obligation, or punishment". That is NOT forgiveness. The punishment will still come. Nowhere in the bible does it say that forgiveness is absolution. God says "I forgive you for MY sake". He does not say "I absolve you of ALL your sins". That would mean the removal of consequences and punishment for all your sins, which is not the case. Forgiveness is for God's sake. Forgiveness helps the abused, not the abusers. It is a blotting out of bad memories and actions of evil people who defy God's will. And God's will is that you do not sin because of your love for Him through the Holy Spirit.

We are Absoloutely forgiven. Our sins are blotted out by the precious blood of Christ. It literally says blotted out. The benefit of sinner? Forgiveness is for the sinner, the transgressors of the law. Salvation & reconciliation to God when we were dead in our trespasses. Saying anything contrary to that contradicts the Bible. There is a New Testament. For this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. 7 “Blessed are those whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 8 Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord will never count against them.” Psalms Praise the LORD, my soul, and forget not all his benefits- 3 who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 2 Blessed is the one whose sin the LORD does not count against them and in whose spirit is no deceit. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, Come now, let us reason together, says the Lord: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

@@JohnSmith-zo6ir You’re comments are convoluting the gospel, the good news, and what Godly forgiveness actually is. Trying to say everyone will still “pay” for their sins is contrary to the good news. This is wrong. The Bible literally says what the punishment of sin is: death. But the gift of God is eternal life. We are NOT punished by God for our sin. Skipped on blessings? Yes. Ashamed at the Bema seat? Yes. Punished for our iniquities? No. Again the Bible clearly states the punishment of sin is death. Godly forgiveness Absoloutely absolves you from your sin- definition of absolve: to pronounce clear of guilt or blame. We are reconciled. We are now guiltless as JESUS took our punishment in the cross. We receive salvation forgiveness of our sins from his loving sacrifice. It’s not a big revelation to know that there are earthly consequences of sin. You fornicate you may get pregnant alone. You steal you may go to jail. You keep sinning? The Bible says your body will be given over to Stan for death SO that your soul will be saved. No one is saying there are not consequences here. But saying forgiveness doesn’t mean you won’t be punished by God is wrong. Yes it Absoloutely does mean you will not be punishment. The punishment for sin is death. Saying forgiveness helps the abused not the abusers is wrong. Forgiveness helps everyone. Forgiveness saves our souls, all of ours that believe in the son and do the will of God. What does Jesus say in the Bible say the will of God is? To believe on the Son (John 6:40)We all have sinned. We are all the abusers. And yet we are forgiven by placing our faith in Christ. You’re leading people to believe that God doesn’t truly forgive, forgiveness is for the innocent (abusers) and forgiveness does not result in salvation, or actual forgiveness of sins. @@Prin_Cess_007 Stop trying to change the word of God to suit yourself. The bible says do not add to or take away from the word and you are doing both. The word is VERY clear. God forgives for his sake not yours and nowhere in the bible does it say forgiveness is absolution (The removal of punishment). God forgives, but that does not remove the consequences for your sin. The way to avoid punishment is easy. Don't sin. Forgiveness is not a green light to continue sinning with the convenient and false belief that there will be no punishment. God does punish and love at the same time. The very meaning of Sola Scriptura is "As it is written" and "As it is written" is not "convoluting". And as far as the wages of sin being death; death is a consequence of sin, which confirms that God forgives for his sake, not yours. Death is a punishment. I have forgiven people for the abuse they have done to me, but that hasn't removed the consequences for their abuse . I forgave them for my sake on my journey to healing, not for their sake to carry on abusing others. My forgiveness of my abusers is to release the burden of that abuse from my shoulders. In other words for "my sake" not theirs. I have watched them suffer the consequences (punishment) for their abuse of me, but I continue to love them. So punishment and love are not mutually exclusive. Punishment is a corrective measure to change people's behaviours from bad behaviours to good behaviours. When you are "born again", the proof of that claim is a change in behaviours for the good. Clearly you are trying to change the scriptures to avoid taking ownership for your sinful behaviours. Own your sinful behaviours and change them for the good. In that way you avoid the punishment. Here is the scripture again and don't try to change it or take it out of context. Isaiah 43:25 [The context is God is talking to Jacob and Israel and the promise of victory. God explains how he will send out an army against Babylon and lists all the things he will do for them. He then continues to say that he has not burdened them (Jacob and his family Israel), yet they have burdened God with their sins]. That takes you down to verse 24 where God says "But you have burdened me with your sins and wearied me with your offenses". And immediately following that in verse 25 he says ... 25“I-yes, I alone-will blot out your sins for my own sake and will never think of them again. So verse 24 and 25 together are very clear. God is forgiving Israel for their sins to remove the burden from God ("for my sake"). But that doesn't remove the consequences of their sins and offenses as we witness further down in verse 28. 26Let us review the situation together, and you can present your case to prove your innocence. 27From the very beginning, your first ancestor sinned against me; all your leaders broke my laws. 28That is why I have disgraced your priests; I have decreed complete destruction for Jacob and shame for Israel. Verse 28 are the consequence. So God can be all loving, merciful and forgiving yet still punishes for sin to correct bad behaviours. The message is "don't sin" and then you will avoid punishment. Forgiveness does NOT remove consequences.

@@JohnSmith-zo6ir I didn’t change the word of God, but I did give scriptures & definitions that obviously contradict your comments. I don’t think you quite understand what forgiveness is. The Good news of the Gospel seems to offend you, it also did the Pharisees & sadducees as well. Here’s the actual defition of forgiveness, from the original Greek language which the New Testament was written in. If you change what forgiveness means, that’s on you. The word nāśā means “the taking away, forgiveness or pardon of sin, iniquity, and transgression.” So characteristic is this action of taking away sin that it is listed as one of God’s attributes (e.g., Exod 34:7; Num 14:18, Mic 7:18). What is the biblical meaning of forgiveness? Forgiveness, according to the Bible, is correctly understood as God’s promise not to count our sins against us. Biblical forgiveness requires repentance on our part (turning away from our old life of sin) and faith in Jesus Christ. Again, here’s the verse that clearly says forgiveness is the removal of punishment. If you have an issue with the Word of God, I would pray on it. You must have faith to believe. Have a good day! “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” ‭‭Romans‬ ‭6:23‬ ‭ Psalms 32:1 “Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.” “For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭4:2‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ 5But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness, 6just as David also describes the blessedness of the man to whom God imputes righteousness apart from works: 7“Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, And whose sins are covered; 8Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sin.” Romans 4

@Dakota Bledsoe see how you see God? So you don’t believe Jesus? So you believe you will have your flesh identity in the clouds and there’s men and women in mansions walking around?? The whole book is allegory, dark sayings and parables so you understand it’s all about the inner kingdom in you and Christ in you. Try to put fear into people and damn people being a religious Pharisee.

@Dakota Bledsoe yeah I didn’t think you had any answers. You want to say Jesus is wrong or I’m wrong for quoting him but you have no idea clearly. You just want to walk around making people scared and your so special. Thanks for your input

Firstly the point is Jesus covered this with his grace. So the holy spirit teaching about our own faults. Only he give us insight on how we should live according to scriptures. Firstly let's consider we have sexual organs, that have special requirements regarding the issue of life. The minimum requirements are no orral no anal those go against god's will for us. Washing it's a minimum simple requirement that you don't lie with the seed of copulation overnight or on your bedclothes or on you or your partner. It must be washed off. Why? Because it's an unclean for you. Simple truths that don't require a lot of effort.
