The wine bottle would probably work a bit better with a stand-off above the surface to be penetrated. Look at the size of the hole...very large diameter, which could mean the jet hadn't fully formed due to being too close. Back up a few inches and the jet could be more focused into a smaller and concentrated area. Pretty fun stuff regardless.

I don't think it matters that the plates can move downwards, supposedly reducing the penetration power. I think that the explosion and jet has done all it can do in such a short amount of time, it is over and done with before the plates have even moved a millimetre. It's the same with shooting armour piecing bullets at steel plates, free to move and fixed. You don't get any noticeable extra penetration by strapping the plate down. There is such a large difference in mass and momentum between projectile and target that the projectile has done all the work that it can so quickly the plates barely move at all before it's all spent. It's counter-intuitive but I believe the physics checks out. I think this type of explosion is no different to the bullet example fixed vs. free to move target makes only the most incredibly small difference. In other words, if the projectile had been able to cut through the steel plate, it would have done so before the plate even began to move so it makes no difference if the plate is fixed or not. I am still not absolutely sure though and would love to hear other's opinions, those hopefully with better maths/physics abilities than mine.

Yep.. ridiculous explanation they gave, you were very nice about it but in reality what they said was EMBARASSINGLY wrong, lol.. to think gravity will have any impact when the high explosives are expanding at 8000m/s.. lol its over in half a milisecond and gravity only accelerates things at 9.8 m/s.. mind you the same force of gravity is applied to the jet too so no you're right it makes no sense what so ever

In U.S Military there's a missile that can punch almost 1500mm of RHA and that is the AGM-114L Hellfire Tandem Shaped Charge Missile ATGM used by the AH-64 Apache Helicopter. Tandem is like a 2 stage missile. Pretty much 2 Shaped Charge. The weaker one will go first then the second one is the stronger one. There is what we called reactive armor, the reactive armor is designed to explode outward interfering with the shape charge, making the Shape Charge obselete or lose penetrating power , and there comes the tandem shape and is the one that can defeat the reactive armor. The weaker first shape charge is the one will destroy the reactive armor giving way for the stronger shape charge to punch through the main composite armor. And also there are handheld Shaped Charged HEAT Missile/Rockets that can punch through 800+mm of RHA armor. Platform ATGM: In Russia, they have Kornet ATGM. In U.S, they have TOW Missile ATGM. Handheld Rocket/Missile: In Russia, they have RPG or Rocket Propelled Grenade. In U.S., they have Javelin Missile.

Slightly wrong here. The optimum placing of a shaped charge is a minimum of 3 times the diameter of the cone away from the target material. This is where the best jet is achieved.
@crawford3233 жыл бұрын
Think about it. A water jet will cut through steel. What you need is a sufficient amount energy and a medium to transfer that energy. If you use a substance to transfer that energy which fractures as glass does, which is down to the molecular level, you have billions of high energy chisels helping do the work.
@hootinouts2 жыл бұрын
True but it's really garnet introduced at the nozzle of the water jet that does the actual cutting.
@crawford3232 жыл бұрын
@@hootinouts Yes but the weight and the velocity of the water which provides the energy. Without that the cutting media would not be applied with the force necessary. It is a partnership.

And with that, tanks went from using thicker and thicker armour such as the ww2 tanks, onto putting effort in not being hit in the first place. Once weapons start being capable of penetrating 1meter of RHA it becomes stupid to actually make tanks with walls as thick as that. Crazy what science can do.
@petrkdn82242 жыл бұрын

Shaped charges go back much further in time and was called the Munroe effect after an American chemist and inventor, Charles E. Munroe, the hollow-charge effect was first discovered in 1888 while he was working for the U.S. Navy. Munroe observed that a block of gun cotton inscribed with "U.S.N" once detonated in contact with a steel plate left an imprint of the markings into the steel surface. Subsequently in 1894, Munroe constructed the first crude shaped charge. Later in 1910, Egon Neumann, a German scientist independently discovered that a block of TNT with a conical indention was able to punch a hole through a steel plate.

In first demonstration, they said the 2 shaped charges were connected to 'shock tube'. It was det cord, not shock tube. After initiation with shock tube, the plastic tube itself is left intact. Det cord on other hand is high explosive, nothing left. You can hold shock tube and not lose fingers (I don't recommend). Det cord will take fingers, hand, and part of forearm. The real clue was slow speed video.... fire effect between 2 steel plates. Shock tube is really boring, although you can see the charge travel through tube.

1:49 The "expert guy" is wrong. The metal isn't molten. The metal is in what's called a superplastic state. Basically, the copper is soft enough that the shockwave from the explosion makes it bend like a fluid and launches it out in a focused beam. The metal is still solid and penetrates thick armor, it's just traveling at 5-10 kilometers per second in a superplastic jet / beam. TLDR The copper does not melt from the explosion. It's simply shaped into a beam by the shockwave and ejected away by the explosion at extreme speeds.

My brother works in a hush-hush advanced material laboratory and he’s a university professor w/ 2 Ph.D., anyway, I asked him a similar question; isn't copper considered a ductile metal? Yes, he replied. But how come when we shoot a relatively thick copper sheet with a high-velocity rifle, it breaks to pieces? Here's his answer; at the high yielding-stress ratio, the natural behavior of a material alters to a somewhat that may be a far cry from the natural behavior. For example you can punch through a still sheet with a glass slug.
