The early church fathers in the Eastern Orthodox Church had worked this out perhaps a thousand years before the Protestant Reformation. They said both works and faith are needed for our salvation. Why this dichotomy? Why do we pit faith and works against each other when both are good and needed for salvation?

I know a guy who is an amazing Christian and we have had some interesting conversations and when I was mentioning something can’t actually remember what it was he said “but that’s making a judgment “ which I hadn’t recognised! Most people see me as the opposite none judgmental so it certainly made me think about my reactions and assumptions about people! He was absolutely right. Yes there are some very good and moral people around who don’t ascribe to any religious beliefs, I know a lot. People often say to me “your a good person “ you don’t have a bad bone in your body “ I however don’t see myself that way I recognise I’m imperfect and I suppose I came to my decision to accept Jesus and repent because of various challenges including serious abuse child exploitation, rape an extremely dysfunctional childhood that was traumatic plus later in life about early thirties I started to feel really angry and bitter also revengeful, I was also having very demonic nightmares struggling with raising two young Children alone, I didn’t like how it made me feel the bitterness reminded me of a cancer eating away at me truly horrible! It was at this point I gave everything over to Jesus praying like crazy at three in the morning as a car was petrol bombed outside my maisonette, I don’t think I had ever felt so alone and isolated there was no where else to turn the experience I had was very profound so from that moment on I felt total peace that I had never experienced and was able to deal with what ever life threw at me. I can only go by my experience but it was life changing. I now at 62 recognise someone had their hand on me all through my life no matter how difficult like the jigsaw pieces all fitted together. Your last question is a very interesting one usually I probably could answer! I hope someone on here can answer that one! without judgement of course! I would probably use the analogy of a parent and Child who is naturally rebellious well some are! You care for unconditionally so when they do something wrong you discipline them for their own good possibly safety they apologise say they won’t do it again but continue to ignore you instead of stopping so then their apology means nothing but you still love them, The key in life is to change our bad ways and strive to walk in truth to be compassionate and lead by example otherwise people will not take you seriously basically Christians are disciples of Christ himself but we can never be as good as him as know one can live up to his standards more we should be striving to be Christ like. I know the Bible says “let every Man work out his own Salvation “ Sorry it’s a bit long winded but I hope someone comes along your path for things to make more sense.

It’s a huge leap from that reasoning to 3-in-One, the Trinity.
Forget about Jesus for a second and the Trinity for a second. If his reasoning is right, which is reasonable, then that is evidence that some sort of God exists. Doesn’t have to be Jesus or the Trinity yet, but let’s start slow and figure out if it’s reasonable for there to be some type of God. Then if you reason that there is some sort of God that exists, it is then that you begin to examine the different religions. But just like how Frank Turek said in this video, if there is no God, you have no way to justify good or evil. Any way that you would try to justify good or evil would just be an opinion of yours. If there is no God, there is no objective absolute good or evil, it’s just your opinion vs mine. It’s just Mother Teresa’s opinion vs. Hitler’s opinion. No one is right, no one is wrong, everything just is.

@@angelabreu319 also, people judge God based on a natural perspective looking at supernatural things, but there's a supernatural side as well that an atheist or agnostic may not be able to relate to. There are two sides to the point of morality in The Bible, a natural side, and a supernatural side, and *both* need to be considered when reading The Bible. For example, God said not to take inanimate objects from the foreign lands that are associated with other gods, because those objects are cursed, and if the people were to take those curses unto themselves, they would become cursed like the thing they took. In Joshua chapter 7, a man named Achan took silver and gold and a Babylonian garment that was forbidden to take, and as a result, Not only was he and everything he possessed cursed, but the curse affected the entire congregation of Israel as well, and God said that he would no longer be with them unless they removed the curse thing from them. As a result, not only did Achan die, but also his family, his livestock, and even the very tint that the items were buried in was destroyed. The shows that the curse is able to spread and effect things around it, and that's why not only Achan died, but everything he had also was destroyed, and it's these supernatural things that seem to be underlying these events happening in The Bible, including the firstborn in egypt, for example. This means that when agnostics make moral judgments against God based on these events, they're making these judgments that pertain to the supernatural which the atheist or agnostic doesn't relate to, and therefore the atheist and agnostic is making it a judgment beyond what they understand. That's not meant as an insult, it's just to say that since the supernatural is involved in it is an underlying source and the atheist doesn't understand the nature of the supernatural, then he's making a judgment beyond his means of being able to relate to the situation, and that's why the atheist should withhold judgment. he took a curse upon himself, his livestock, his family, and even the very tent that all of the items were hidden in.

@@McLovin18-88 because then people can come up with a standard of morality of their own. Hitler made his own standard of morality and many people followed and believed him and in so doing, they thought they were doing the right thing, and today we know he was obviously wrong. But why is it wrong and why was he wrong? In a secular world view, life is but an accident and a random mix of neurochemical reactions, so basically what one chemical accident does to another chemical accident is totally irrelevant. This is why an appeal to morality from humanity is wrong. In the Christian world view, we know that we are all made in the image of God and are all equal in His eyes and as such we should treat each other with dignity, respect and humility. What we internalize as right and wrong is nothing more then morality that is been ingrained in to us. For hundreds of thousands of years parents have taught certain things are morally wrong. Things like murder, rape and stealing have been taught and ingrained in to us. No one really needs to be told murder is wrong. We all know it instinctively. If murder was allowed to run rampant in a society that society would not thrive. It would die or become like an open sore never heals. We also as individuals see the harm murder can do. As humans we have compassion and empathy. Which allows is to some small degree relate and recognize how would feel if some one we loved was murdered. Not only that but how losing that person can impact out lives. This helps reinforce that murder is wrong. You don't need a creator to have a standard of morality. In word of Spock the needs of the many out weight the needs of the few; or the one. This is very much the reason why humans cling to a set of standard morality. Frank has no evidence to back up his claim. His using his personal opinions to back up the claim that with out God there can be no objective morality. Were what I'm saying can be back up with observation over hundreds of thoundsands of years of knowledge and understanding and philosophy. Last point I'm going to make. You wouldn't have been able to write this comment if you are not alive, for you to be able to write, you have to be alive, for you to be alive, you need the spirit, the spirit is not from yourself,it is from a bigger super power that your mind cannot comprehend who is God... From now on, please know that you need God, even if you do not want to believe in Him..... Only fools says, they don't believe in God or there is no God

I agree, but I would say, it's wayyyyyyyyyyy easier to be righteous when you've walked with God for a while. I tried to prove I could be moral as an atheist when I was young and failed miserably. I still fail, but only a 20th as much or so.

@Anon Ymous Some Christians are hypocrites. Hypocrites exist in anything. I used to be atheist though. I wanted to prove to everyone that I didn't need religion to be moral. By the time I was 19 I was hitting rock bottom. I lost the woman I truly loved and drank to get by. One day, God came to me for the first time. 14 years ago. I felt His unmistakable presence. I didn't believe it though. That night, I felt this love that was just beyond anything. I remember thinking, it felt like He loved me 15 times more than I loved everyone I had ever loved combined. Then I thought about all the things I had said against Him, all the things I've done, all the things I looked at in secret on the internet... I felt that He could see it all, simultaneously. But, He wasn't mad. I just felt this mercy that seemed as unfathomable as His love. Guilt hit me like a ton of bricks. I started crying and I told Him, I still wouldn't believe He was real, by the time I woke up the next day. But, He stayed with me that night. When I woke up, the first thing I saw on the TV seemed like a sign. Needless to say, I believed in Him with all my heart. After some years went by I realized, I wasn't righteous at all. I just didn't believe most of the bad things I did were even wrong. Then I raised a little girl and learned many lessons about innocence and righteousness. I learned how badly certain sins had destroyed so many precious things inside me. I wasn't compelled to be righteous by the fear of hell or reward of Heaven. I did it because I know what Jesus Christ did for me on the cross. It's His goodness that got me doing good things. hell might get someone to come to Him. But, the fear of hell doesn't inspire good works. I enjoy it and am addicted to it.
