I actually solved it the other way around, starting with the fact that there must be nine 9's meaning one in each box and then descending the numbers.

I did the same (in 4:52). I never did any corner pencil marking. I did use center pencil marks, but as it turns out, I really didn’t need to.

Same, 9 9s seemed most logical to me. Finished in 3:12, didn't even need pencil marks, it all flowed so beautifully.

I’m laughing now. I’ve watched this channel daily for well over 3 years, attempted a few puzzles but never got much past placing one digit. Paused this video right after Simon begged us to try this one, and completed it in 16.16! Thank you so much to both Simon and Dorlir.

You COULD do the fives if you'd have finished the fours! You can solve each number in order before moving on to the next, either from 1 to 9 or from 9 to 1.

That's exactly what I did. Haven't watched Simon yet but it doesn't surprise me that he went about it another way. For me this wasn't even a puzzle so much as a chain reaction. I made one move at the start and every subsequent move pretty much made itself. Very pretty though! Edit: Just watched Simon's solve. It's interesting to me that he started with where the digits must go *outside* the circles. My approach was almost the opposite: Starting from the 1s, I proved where each digit had to go *inside* the circles which for some reason seemed a lot more intuitive for me. You know that 1 has to land in a circle be in both row 7 and column 7, so the only option is r7c7. The 1s automatically fill in after that and you move onto the twos. You know 2s have to appear in circles in rows 7 and 8 and columns 4 and 7 - this creates an x wing that is immediately resolved by the existing 1s, and you can fill in every 2 in the grid. The pattern repeats for the entire puzzle. 3s have to appear at the intersections of rows 478 and columns 147 and the filled digits immediately resolve where each digit goes. 4s have to intersect at 4789 and 1478. Every digit afterward just adds a restricted column to intersect with and basically solves itself.

Simon wouldn't be Simon if he didn't do a boo-boo in even the easiest of sudokus... His weird chaotic brain missed the fact the he missed the 4 in box 6, which made him produce that nonsense about the sequence ending with 5s. But his radiant joy as he was doing the solve was charming.

2:32 for me! This must be the fastest solve for me ever! It is even easier than some of the recent GAS puzzles, which sometimes take me 4-5 minutes!

Fun watching Simon start with the 1s starting from the bottom right, I did it starting with the 9s from the top left and it was a very similar path! *edit* As Simon later notes would also be an option

In fact the more I think about it the more I think it is in fact a functionally identical path - if you placed squares in all the blank spaces and removed the circles, and then defined the square clues as "A digit in a square indicates the difference between 10 and the exact number of squares that contain that digit" - applying "empty cell" logic like Simon did starting from 1s on this modified puzzle works exactly the same as the "circled cell" logic did starting from 9s in the original puzzle...

I think the easiest way is to start with 1 or 9 and complete both. then do the same with 2 and 8. then 3 and 7, and finally 4 and 6. then just fill the empty fields with 5.

We've seen puzzles like this before (though maybe never to this degree) where a beautiful solution path is nearly unavoidable, the way I like to look at it is puzzles like these sit on and maybe across the line between "puzzle" and "toy" -- the joy of it is not in the effort of finding the solution path the way we're used to puzzles working but rather in setting things moving and watching how pleasingly it practically solves itself...

I would still consider it a puzzle. But its more like a riddle, because the puzzle was completed with just one logical inference (and then a strong of consequences that solve the sudoku)

I love how the path was nearly unavoidable and yet Simon did his damnedest job to avoid it by jumping around to different digits instead of just finishing each of them one at a time in order.

I actually did this the exact opposite way, knowing that there's 9 circled nines, the only digit the circle in box 1 could possibly be is 9, and when you have that it solves all the way down :D

I must have a weird brain. I can see how Simon's way, and your way, makes perfect sense, yet I went about it by first filling in 9 in row 3; then 8,9 in row 2; followed by 7,8,9 in row 1. I then continued filling in circles in rows 6,5,4; followed by 9,8,7. Then filled in the non-circles. It made sense to me at the time. I guess there were multiple approaches.

This puzzle is gorgeous! One thing I love about it is that, in addition to all of box 9 being circled, all of column 7 is circled, and all of row 7 is circled. And then, the intersection of fully-circled box 9, fully -circled row 7, and fully-circled column 7 is the single circled 1. I think that's beautiful!

Beautiful repeating pattern from Dorlir. If you start at the bottom right square, you have 1-9 in "order, with (columns of) 1-2-3, 4-5-6 and 7-8-9. Take the 1 and move it to the bottom right of the bottom middle square and "shift" the number up one, so you have 2-3-4, 5-6-7, 8-9-1, and repeat, moving to the left along a row, up one row, etc. Excellent!

I tried this one as my first sudoku variant because I saw that I would solve it starting from 9 down instead of 1 up as you did. solved in 4:08. I recommend replaying starting with 9 because of how flawlessly and satisfyingly it fills itself immediately. if you do happen to see this I do want to thank you for introducing me to sudoku variants. I watch you every night. I grew up solving regular sudoku with my grandma and am exhilarated by the new puzzles and admiration for how they play out. I really do just enjoy your company as well.

2:35 minutes for me, definitely the fastest i ever solved one, but i also did one recently that was very similar to this, just with a "hidden circles" twist on top, so this was pretty much just an easier version of that one

WOW WOW WOW! That was fun! I normally watch CTC on my big screen TV in my living room, but when I saw this puzzle and read the rules, I instantly knew the approach. I ran to my computer, pulled it up and did it in record time (for me). Unlike Simon, I started with 9 and worked my way down the digits, as this basically starts forcing the digits in sequences through the boxes in order. I also quickly noticed vertical roping, and this really sped up my solve time. Pure enjoyment.

I messed myself, and my time, up by starting with nines, then, for some reason I can’t explain, jumping to the ones, then twos, then eights….but that’s not the fault of this lovely puzzle. It looks so ferocious at first glance, but it’s a teddy bear when you get going. Thank you, Dorlir and Simon!

Took me 4:14 and was just very enjoyable to do. This is the perfect puzzle to show somebody who might be new to variant sudoku: looks daunting at first with no given digits, but very doable for anyone of any skill level. Also, very cool to see the solve counter jump by over 400 in the few minutes between me starting this puzzle and finishing it.

I started slightly different than most, apparently: I looked at column 7 and row 7 and decided that, since there had to be a 1 in each, the only possible cell for the digit 1 was the intersection.

That's quite interesting, my solve was basically the opposite of yours, I started with the 9 in box 1 and worked down, it works exactly the same. 4:14 from me shows you this is insanely simple but really elegant. Edit: the logic would have continued had you placed the 4 in box 6 and I'm quite surprised you either didn't notice or mention the roping.

A lovely thing I noticed about this on my own solve. For starters, just look at the top three rows. The first three cells in every column are three in a row, counting up and wrapping around. Like, col 1 is 912, col 4 is 891, col 7 is 789, col 3 is 678, and so on: we get a 567, 456, 345, 234, and 123 too. Same thing for the parts of each column in the middle three rows, and the parts of each column in the bottom three rows. I went through the puzzle box by box rather than digit by digit, so once I realized what was happening the digits just flew onto the page in such a beautifully symmetric way. It even felt good to type in the digits, because I was just rolling my fingers along the number row of my keyboard. Just beautiful stuff. There's so many different ways you could solve the puzzle, and they all have their own beautiful rhythm to them.

Yup. This is my first solve of a variant sudoku. Really nice :) I was a little disorganised, and so bounced between solving low digits, and then high digits, and then back to low.

Thank goodness Sudoku doesn't include something like 81 digits. Simon would end up talking about the triangular number for 81, "which is oneplustwoplusthreeplusfourplusfiveplussixplussevenpluseightplusnineplustenpluseleven..... all the way up to pluseightyone", instead of just simplying to "which is the sum of all the digits 1 to 81."

Originally I started the puzzle with 9->8->7->etc. But the ability to fill in all of a particular number eventually stops and you have to go on to other numbers and come back. You are able to finish it by going 1->2->3->etc. It didn't work for you here, because you missed a 4 which would've finished the 5s.

Whoa this is a VERY easy puzzle, feels like a GAS. Done it in 4:20 (yeah, very nice time, surprised me as well) . . . . Started with the obvious low hanging fruit of 9, then easy 8, easy 7, after filling a bunch of 7-8-9 circles all around i switched to the opposite 1-2-3 outside circles. Smooth finish after that.

I have never yelled louder at CTC video than I did at 10:35 when Simon says, “…you can’t. The 5s are going to run out.” And I yelled, “The 4s!!!!!!!! Finish the 4s!!!!!!!!!”

545 solves in 3 days, Over 6,000 in the next 2 hours. That's the power of Cracking the Cryptic. Spotted the 9's straight away, solved down to the 5's, then started at 1, just to vary the process. 3.30. by far the quickest I've ever completed a puzzle on this channel.

..took me 15 mins, but did take a phone call in the middle. Worked the 987's in the top block 1st, followed by the 123's in the bottom and it just fell out.. I earning hats in the GAS ap just now, and while I may be slow, thoroughly enjoying it, and have 5 hats out of 30 something, but I am getting better and quicker. Thank you for these, I'm hooked..

every number appears once in box 9, so there's only one (1) option for the uncircled cell in box 8 and then only two (1 and 2) can go in the uncircles in box 7, then you get a 123 in box 6, and you can place 1 in box 5 and 234, and then 12 in box 4 column 2, with 345 in col3, and then follow that through, and then put a 9 in box 1 and 98 in box 2, etc working backwards, and it's rather easy for this chanel! I did it in 09:25 - fastest time for me for any CTC puzzle! nearly 20k solves in 6 days!

Finished in 4.29. I went through placing 9, 1, 8, 2, 7, 3, 6, 4, 5 because the logic strings are basically the same for inside/outside the circles when I took 1 with 8 . . . such a fun puzzle.

I saw box 9 and immediately saw the trick, went to the site and solved in 1:45 :) though I started in the circles from 9 down to 1, then used the logic Simon started with to finish. Rather symmetric solving paths

2:55, and I have no idea how my brain plugged all that together, but I pretty much immediately saw the 9/89/789 in boxes 123 and the 1/12 in boxes 87, and was off to the races. That was an incredible solve, with each of the pieces flowing back and forth in opposite directions (especially once I twigged to the roping.)

Completed that in 3:04, chuckling all the way - that was a blast!! I started with 9s and mostly worked my way down [edit] I don't think beating Simon means anything this time when the madman is clearly making up new rules as he goes!!! Just for Simon - the solve counter's at 13078 in 3.9 days, as per my solve 🙂

I first looked at the thumbnail and thought “wait, wouldn’t it be so obvious?”. Then I see the video duration and just laughed. 3.41 for me, finally a sub-5. Even though I kinda cheated because of the mentioned thumbnail, so pretty much already figured out what to do even before the clock runs. That’s really fun puzzle, though.

6:24 of just writing in the numbers. Difficulty 1/5 Enjoyment 3/5, since it was just to easy and straight forward Quality of setting 5/5, there is great elegance in simplicity. Mechanics showcase 6/5. This puzzle is possibly the best way to introduce someone to the circle mechanic, who has never done it before. Btw I also started with 9 instead, but since it is tge exact same logic, that didn't make a difference

You didn't talked about it but there is a pattern in the boxes : it is the same sequence cycling over from top left to bottom right following columns in each box. Beggining in box 9 there is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 following the cycle I described above then in box 8 the sequence starts by 2. Box 7 starts by 3 etc etc. I hope I was clear enough in my explanations ^^

This was a beautiful puzzle. Truly quite simple once you understand the constraints given, but nonetheless a beautiful puzzle. Beauty doesn't always require complexity :)

Hi, I solved this puzzle when I saw it on LMG a few days ago, within 3min51s. Wonderful puzzle really, loved watching Simon resolve it. Just wanted to correct Simon when he said that it stops at the fives, it doesn't ! Actually you can complete the grid (and you should at my opinion, for a very satisfying experience) by completing every digit one after the other, either 1 to 9 or 9 to 1. (Maybe we could use it as a personnality test, according to if you chose to start with 1 or 9, or another digit if that's possible ?)

6:50 for me! Interestingly, it is not my fastest time on a non-GAS puzzle from CTC. I did 3:08 on a 6x6 antiknight thermo puzzle, video titled "Easy puzzles can still be brilliant!".

I've solved it in 1 minute and 37 seconds, making it not only my fastest empty grid solve, but also my fastest overall solve! This should be the basic suggested puzzle for this type of rule.

first puzzle i attempted a puzzle in quite a while. saw the picture, watched the rules, said to myself WTF that's a 100% forced? started my solve, finished with 4:24 ... now ... i feel cheated on :-/

Such a beautiful simple puzzle, I am not massive on Sudoku, but if they were this easy I'd happily participate more. As soon as you inserted the 1 to 3's, I immediately solved the puzzle. Every box is running 1 through to 9, left to right consecutively.

Yes, 8 minutes. That is for sure my fastest time ever on a CtC video (including the GAS). Fun (yeah, for a second by comparison, you're right ). Nice.. 😂

Incredibly satisfying and easy solution, 8:07 for me :D immediately noticed the full row/columns meaning 9 9's, 8 8's, etc. and went back and forth getting the 9's and 8's in as I could, but found more success leading to the solution going in ascending order after with the 1's 2's etc.

I don't need to check the comments to know how upset people were with Simon for not finishing the 4s before the 5s started. I'm still annoyed he started with the 1 in R8C6 and not the 9 in R1C1. Beautifully symmetrical solve only partly butchered by the pencil marking.

This is only the second CTC puzzle I've managed to solve. And actually thought this setting would be a great parody after the first circles puzzle I saw. :D Good fun.
