Thanks for getting me into hard sudokus! I'm not British, but now when I'm solving a puzzle, I speak to myself in proper English, and murmur things to myself like "so, threes, look", "that places the two here", "and now these eights mean that this square cannot be an eight", "and now immediately I'm looking at this row", "this is very nice actually", "and now, look, this square sees a seven, so that fixes the five here", "look at this, this is a very nice pattern here." whenever i'm able to limit a digit in a row/column to exactly two squares, i have noticed that without even thinking i start to look for a second row/column where i can limit the same digit to the same two columns/rows. that's how i found the X-wing on 8's in this puzzle. now this new "involuntary habit" of mine may waste my time in the long run (looking for a row/column in puzzles where there are none), but it does mean that i almost never miss an X-wing!

@Darkness38274 жыл бұрын
Very interesting puzzle. One extra thing I spotted that I thought was cool was once you got the first X-Wing on 8s it allowed you to pencil mark 8s in all 4 boxes, creating another X-Wing on 8s in rows 2 and 4 of collumns 1 and 7. Then once you got the 39 pair in the bottom it forced the 7 into the 2nd X-Wing which ended up solving both X-Wings.
@JeremyButlerquarterthru4 жыл бұрын
27:48 , I did the same, placed all the 8s at the same time with the double x-wing. Took me 4-5 minutes to realize the 7 in box 7, to unwind it all, then it was smooth sailing. Also spotted the 24 - 56 pairs in row 7 very early on.

Hi, sorry if this may sound like a dumb question, but around the 16:10 minute mark, you filled in that 8 on R1C3, how did you immediately conclude that it was a 9 beside it? Within that row the 6-9 pair could still be in the 2 open positions being R1c2 and R1c9 or did I miss something. I only recently got into Sudoku and am slowly learning and this part really confused me as I attempted the puzzle and got stuck around this part.
@kylebretherton19299 ай бұрын
It's because of the pencil markings. When he filled in the 8, he eliminated one of the two squares pencil marked with 9, so the 9 had to be in the other square.

After the 8 X-wing restricts the 8s in the bottom right to the 7-8 pair, I noticed the other 8s now forms another 8 X-wing in r2,4 and c1,7. This second X-wing is "entangled" with the first because they are in the same 3x3 boxes. I call these "entangled X-wings" (from quantum mechanics' "entanglement"). This occurs in the video about 11:00

When the second 8 is placed in the x-wing (at 15:55 in the video), how do you imediately see that the cell to the left of the 8 (row 1, column 2) is a 9? The puzzle is pretty much solved at that point, but I don't see how the solving of the x-wing imediately gives the 9 right after it

1:14:56 on this one... Spoilers below (if anyone is concerned about spoilers for a 2 year old puzzle). However, the proper breakdown of this one could probably be most accurately divided into 20 minutes of easy progress (everything up to the naked 1 in box 9), ~45 minutes of desperate bifurcating/mapping out cell options, and then 10 minutes of cleanup after finally noticing the 8's x-wing in Row 1/4... What might have been if I'd been slightly more observant and not tried desperately to break the very appealing pairs in R3C1/R3C7/R7C1/R7C7 instead :/ It's possible that there is some sort of way to solve the puzzle without noticing the x-wing, but idk how it could possibly be done without chaining multiple bifurcations together and looking for some sort of logical break (or another trick I've forgotten). It was possible to get down to quite a few more restricted cells from the point Simon reached around 8:00, but the aforementioned 1 in R7C8 was the only concrete digit I was able to lock in in that 45 min span lol :P

I took two goes at this puzzle. The first time with well over 30 minutes and I couldn't find anything. Watched the video and as soon as he mentioned the similarity in the two rows I immediately knew he meant an x-wing. I paused the video at that point and restarted the puzzle. I finished in just under 15 minutes with that one hint.

good puzzle for spotting different kind of things because you won't solve it using only snyder notation. nothing really difficult though. solved in 11:52

Simon, when you discovered the 8 'X' then a little later proceeded to enter an 8 in the top corner of the middle-left block, how did you determine this seeing how the position of the 8 in the 'X' box ie lower right box of the middle-left block remained a possibility. The finished puzzle was correct but I couldn't resolve the 8X until much later.

If I understand your question correctly... putting an 8 in the top left corner of the middle left box resolves the green x wing because the middle left box can only have one 8 in it. Therefore the 8 in row 6 must be in the right x wIng spot.

The first hard sudoku from this channel that I was able to solve! took me 37:58 minutes. I still have a lot to improve on.

I get used to see Simon solving some really sick no-digits-at-all puzzles, but when i look him solving this one it made me laugh like he's solving it correct but with way too complicated methods. This vid is really something unusual to see 😂
