How can this fit underneath a city. Its a massive river culvert. In this video we take a journey to Sheffield in the UK. We are going to look at a fantastic storm drain that is locally known as Megatron. We initially follow the Porterbrook to its confluence with the River Sheaf the very river that gave Sheffield its name. This confluence is found under the main Sheffield Midland Railway station. We follow the river Sheaf until it gets to the mighty Megatron chamber. A huge underground chamber that is a brick built victorian arch designed to carry trams across the river sheaf above ground back in the late 19th century Victorian times. Megatron is a victorian storm drain designed to carry the flood waters of the River Sheaf and the Porterbrook safely out underground Sheffield to the River Don. Lots of walking in old Victorian river culverts in waders. This is an underground urbex in Victorian brick built river culverts hidden underground in the city of Sheffield UK

Hi Martin, great to see you on this side of the pennines in my old stomping ground, you did well to explore it in one go. I spent several days down there, going a bit further each visit, and remembering all the deep pools and slippy bits as I spent hours light painting, trying to get the perfect photograph Still unbelievable that this magnificent structure lies hidden under the streets of Sheffield, and thanks for giving me a mention, appreciate that, all the best with your future explores.....Pat

Hi Martin, when I was visiting family in Sheffield Mid 2018 I heard a rumour that a forgotten castle had been discovered in Sheffield and was starting to be unearthed. I heard this at the end of my trip before I left to head home to Australia so I never had the chance to look into it further. I think I heard it was discovered under an old market place. Might be a good thing to look into on your next trip to Sheffield, I won't be able to get back for some years due to this pandemic so I'd love to know how far along the excavations have got.

Great video, I live opposite pocket park and have always wanted to walk this route. One thing I’ve always pondered is the reasoning behind the deep channel section that runs through the Porter brook for a great length in the area around where you entered. Any ideas? My thought is that it was to ensure a higher flow during low rain season to wash away any toxic or foul water that would otherwise start to smell if flowing slowly?

Update - Sheffield City Council are redevloping the area around the old Castle Market right now and the weir just beyond Megatron is to be opened up with the concrete panels in the roof being removed. The map at 36:50 in this video shows the area being opened practically where the blue arrow is pointing.

It's been a long time, but you said it. "And it stinks". Always makes me laugh. Great video Martin, just shows we don't know what's under our cities.

Great vid Martin & Co. I've been on the map looking at the area where the Sheaf and the Don meet and that old map of you showed of it being open. There are 2 old buildings on the old map that sit above S and T in street (Exchange Street) and above Castlefolds Market, small lane sits between them and are the only 2 left standing. Both have interesting frontage features. I could go on and on the differences from old map to now map!

All rivers and streams that have been covered up, should be open. Just think about the fish returning if they did

I agree rivers should be open, but sadly the victorians solution to river pollution was to just build over them. You'd have to demolish alot of buildings to get the rivers open again.
