Two things I need to clarify about this video: 1) I’m only switching engine off when leaving the boat for long periods (such as when filming in locks!) and 2) Check out the description for loads more interesting detail on this stretch of the canal - including why the water is clear 🤓👍

The Wolverhampton level on the BCN is the highest level apart from the short Titford summit level, so it's had very little other waters mixed with it. It's fed primarily by the Chasewater reservoir near Lichfield which is clear with excellent water quality, and basically hasn't had much chance to pick up much silt, because there's been no locks, weirs, etc., because the canal is level. Also the canal which is bringing the water from Chasewater down to the Wolverhampton area (the Wyrley and Essington) is not a very busy canal, so there isn't much entrained silt from moving boats in the water. Once you get to the bottom of the Wolves 21, you'll also see similarly clear waters on the summit level of the Staffs & Worcs. Not only is it fed by whatever water is coming down the locks from the BCN Wolverhampton Level, the other significant supply of water to that level is the outfall of cleaned water from the Wolverhampton sewage works next to Autherley Junction. The water in that area is crystal clear.

@@RobbieCumming I saw someone also mentioned the Bradley pumping station feed which comes out of an underground aquifer. That and Chasewater mean the Wolverhampton level has good quality water sources.

Last year coming up the Staffs & Worcs approaching the junction at the bottom of the Wolvo 21 I had a cormorant swimming under the water alongside of my boat, absolutely stunning to see in the crystal clear water. I came up the 21 a month later and it was again crystal clear even with several boats coming down the flight as I went up.

There are at least three reasons for the water clarity. First, Wolverhampton is on the summit level so a lot of water is pumped in from the aquifer. Second, it's a built up area with very little nitrate wash-off from fields, so lower levels of algae. Third, reduced traffic to stir up the sediment.
@felshampo
@felshampo 4 жыл бұрын
The Birmingham Canal Navigations (BCN) are at a higher level than all the joining canals so water must be supplied from reservoirs or by pumping. A pumping station near Bradley Workshops lifts water from underground springs to supply the Wednesbury Oak Canal and, through that canal, the Wolverhampton Level of the BCN. The fresh water from the springs combined with the limited boat traffic along the canal make for exceptionally clear water where the bottom is visible for most of the length. If your are interested in the history of the canals, including how the BWB changed from trying to close all the canals to trying to keep them open, then there are lots of books on Canal history. The ones I recommended are by Anthony Burton and Derek Pratt "The Anatomy of Canals" but Stuart Fishers canal guide might suit you better.

I do the same in cutting the engine for locks that I have to set first before going in. Those who say it wears the engine by stop starting are getting mixed up with cold starts. Most engine wear comes from cold starts - once it is up to temperature switching off and restarting 10 mins later wont cause significant wear other than possibly to the starter motor. Having said that, I have done this for 15 years and never had any issues.

Hello Robbie, I was born n bred in Wolverhampton in the 1940's, pleased that no one stole your boat. The following few locks passed the old Stafford Road Steam Railway sheds and Wolverhampton Gas Works. Plenty of Industry and History, I was surprised to see how to see how clear the canal was, but I used to fish further down at Aldersley to Oxley near the start of the Shroppy, its the same there if there is no boat traffic, as if there is no life in the water, till you see the fish,strange. Look forward to your next video.

The Wolves stretch is so clear due to being partially fed by a fresh water spring. I remember my first trip along the Wolves stretch as a kid and being amazed by how much drastically clearer it was than the Tardebigge and Alvechurch stretches I grew up on. Now I live slap bang in the centre of Wolverhampton city and I regularly walk along this section, it’s especially beautiful at dawn when the lack of noise matches the clarity of the water. It has been a while since I travelled on a narrow boat, always tempted to pinch my parents for a weekend though.

Turning your engine off at every lock will put extra strain on the battery and starter motor; as long as the oil and it's filter are in good condition running at tick over for five minutes at every lock won't put any noticeable wear on the engine. On a day with lots of locks you may even find it has a detrimental effect on the whole electrical system in that you have house battery level issues when you moor up.
@paulayala4816
@paulayala4816 4 жыл бұрын
YAYYY, I'm officially part of the Crank It Crew. Better to leave your engine idling, there is more wear and tear on the engine at start up because of the oil drain back to the pan. Also, it may not start up again and then you'd be stuck in the lock. Yeah those waters are very clear especially for being in the middle of the city. There is something reassuring about the clak-clak-clak as the paddles are lifting up, it's not a precise bit of engineering, but it has been working for centuries.

Hi Robbie, just joined your happy band as a subscriber. Love the blogs. Found you through the TV series. I concur with many of the comments re engine - leave it running; clarity of water - just so few boat movements to stir up any sediment! Went round the entire Northern BCN in May 2019 and was as surprised as you by the clarity of the water. More than 20 miles of lock free boating - and as far north as you can get on the BCN at the end of the Cannock Extension, and into Anglesey Basin. Didn't see another boat moving the entire time up there. Maybe you'll do a blog on the Northern BCN (if you've not already done so). Might encourage more boaters - its absolutely fascinating. Same can't be said for water clarity on the Main Line - especially at Bromford Junction (to go up Spon Lane Locks), where movement through the water sent up clouds of foul smelling black oily sediment! Keep well, stay safe!

My Anti-Vandal/Handcuff/WaterConservation key (depending on which part of the system you are on) slipped from my hand about half way up the Wolvs locks - guess where it landed? - down the bloody hole the paddle rod goes down! Luckily we were following another boat up and I ran ahead and asked him to leave the Anti-Vandal/Handcuff/WaterConservation locks open. We then went on the lock-free Curly Whirly and I bought anothere from a CaRT man at the top of Rushall locks - and it didn't fit properly! (it was too large)

You shut the gates to reduce leakage. If the top gate leaks closing the bottom gate reduces it flowing out the lock into the pound. Also you will probably do more wear starting your engine more often than letting it run, due to starting with low oil pressure. But it's better for the environment as you will prob use less fuel.

We are both single handed boaters and I learned why the center rope is so critical, it controls the boat while in a wide lock and it can be used to pull your boat through the gates of a narrow lock rather than jumping or using the slippery ladders. Horses did it all the time. (Stern and Bow ropes are only for mooring!)
@RobbieCumming
@RobbieCumming 4 жыл бұрын
I have to agree but also disagree! Yes it’s critical but if you have ever attempted to pull your boat along in open water you’ll notice simply using the centre line alone might not keep it straight enough. Top tip for anyone reading this is to use the bow line as well.

I can only put the extreme water clarity down to a lack of boat traffic due to the pandemic perhaps ? I live in Stalybridge near Ashton-under-lyne and can count on one hand the number of canal boat I've seen this year. The water looks lovely but it's not good for the canal as ive noticed a massive increase in weed growth I assume because of all the light now getting through. Could this perhaps lead eventually to them weeding up and becoming impassible to boats ? Hope not...

Suggest you keep the safety lock key on the keys for starting the narrowboat all the hire boats do this to save hunting for the key. and I'd suggest that when you are going through locks single handed fasten the end of your centre line to one of the bollards then you can easily hand haul your boat out of the lock (its easier than it sounds) with out having to climb down, once out of the lock tie up using the centre line again, while you close the lock gates.

what? Wolverhampton? its certainly not little (250,000 people) not a beautiful place, the decent of the 21 takes you through some of the less scabby areas, but also past the refuse incinirator, the red light district, the abandonded railway line, etc

Absolutely right. Wolves is a great place with lovely folk. I was born and bred here and I'm glad to be back again after living in more exotic places here and abroad. Welcome to my town!

Hi Robbie, You are right, the reason the water is clear is through lack of traffic, The Birmingham old line water is usually quite clear as well. I can’t believe you have not acquired a magnet after five years of canal travelling. I hope you enjoyed your trip. Will you be coming up the shroppie or continuing up the Staffs and Worcester to great Haywood and then then Trent and Mersey. Steve P

In the sailing community it's a big no no to leave the engines idling to charge the batteries because it can glaze the piston bores. If charging batteries it's best to load the engine by leaving in gear whilst tied up. Suppose different rules for different boaters, crazy stuff

we did the wolverhampton 21 at the end of August the same direction as you and the first seven pounds were empty of water as somebody had left the gate paddles up and the top gates leak so badly. i had to call the crt to help refill the pounds overnight.

Great vid Robbie :) I went to Uni at Wolverhampton (it was a "Poly" then) - the water was far from clear then! We are on the East Anglian rivers and EA tell us to turn off our engines when in locks. I like this - saves getting lungfuls of nano-particles or whatever else!

The EA require it on the Thames locks as well, which are staffed my lock keepers. This is so you can hear their instructions. But you are probably right ablout being healthier.

Another classic created Robbie 👌 Thanks P.S. I'm told it's gin. Hence the little known Wolverhampton saying: "...I'm in the drink..." I've made that up by the way. Please don't drink the water.

You should close the gates and paddles in case of a gate/paddle failure so you don't empty an entire section of water.

In my misspent youth I have seen the results of eejits opening every paddle from lock 2 all the way to Aldersley. By the time the water flow reaches lock 17 or 18 it goes over the top of the lock gates and the towpath impassable due to the flooding.

Robbie i found the BML to be the cleanest water of any canal i have travelled on. The only reason i can think is there are vitually no trees dropping leaves leaves in the water and all of the industries which would have used it as a sewer have gone. Any redevelopment has tended to be posh appartments. So as we say in the black, "Glad yo liked it me mon" Ps "Come on me babbies, up the Wolves"

I reckon the water is so clear due to lack of traffic . 21 locks through the middle of Wolverhampton not many people's idea of a good time. Unfortunately that means the silt has all settled to the bottom making the canals that little bit shallower. Good to see you moving again , it's a long way up north from there.😄
@willgaukler8979
@willgaukler8979 4 жыл бұрын
...agreed ... also the shellfish have filtered out all the extra silt... the lack of traffic in general has let the silt settle... watch it return fast as the boats return...
