Really appreciate the talk. Just one thing I wanted to join up with my experience of the chronic illness community. Contrary to Tom saying they don’t identify as disabled due to it being a “bad thing”, I’ve found they overwhelmingly don’t identify as disabled because they locate their suffering in their condition, not in any social barrier that could ever be accomodated away. They hope for better medical treatments ie drugs and procedures (the opposite of the social model of, say, mental health that hopes for better inclusion and reduced stigma). The predominant view of disability does not accomodate the chronically/invisibly ill, because it’s too positive, not too negative. Among other things of course, in particular the fluctuating nature of “crip queer” where ability is highly variable day to day.

For mental health, it's important to educate people into understanding that it's real. I'm 58, Bipolar, and that's the only way i can see that treatment of mental illness and treatment of people with mental illness will improve. Too many people simply don't understand that it's real and don't know how to deal with it. If it matters, I haven't been on disability, at least not yet. But I have been to prison, where much mental illness is treated in the US.

The one thing I noticed about this video that I find disturbing is the size of the audience. Hopefully this lack of attendance isn’t a reflection on society’s level of involvement concerning those with disabilities. Sure there are things in place to help differently abled individuals prosper and contribute of themselves the best they wish to offer in return to our growing community. I feel awareness hasn’t fully blossomed and those who face struggles doing tasks most others take for granted are under appreciated. Could the problem be this subject is a uncomfortable, to be avoided/ignored like a taboo that stays hushed when it manifests itself in the body of another? Let us not turn a blind eye. 5:27 (I’m ranting, My apologies) Share in the comments your interpretation of the audience…

I, and many others, consider myself to be a very able person. Society considers me to be disabled. I can do but I can't do as others do. Therefore I can work tirelessly for my community and for the under privileged but I am not allowed to earn money in a job. I am a scrounger. It's not my problem it's society's problem. By the way, I take so much joy in what I do you can keep your money. I've earned every penny of what I live on.

The talk needs desperately some structure! Is he just telling stories? At around the 30 min mark he talks about definitions of disability (which is apparently the main subject of the talk). How can we redefine disability? Why should we redefine it? What are some possible new definitions? The talk is painfully asking for some visual aids.

In the past we had progress and people tried to help people with disability to have a better life thru help and innovation. Today we have "progressive" people who try to regulate how we speak and wich words we use to describe people with disability. We have a class of entitledd guardians who try to make your life miserable, if you don't agree with their definitions and wording. They are a thought police that dosn't really care for people, but want to control "dissense". "Thought Crime" is now the BIG thing everybody gets exited about. "Bring out the Guillotine!"
