Back in the 60s and 70s we didn't have take out places. Supermarkets closed at 6pm and TV didn't have constant food ads. We also walked a lot more, played outside and snacked less.

Once I worked in a preschool where the children ate whatever for snack time.....cookies, cupcakes, candies, chips. The first day of class I had a flash in my mind of the mountain of junk food that I would consume over the school year if I decided to take the first bite. So, I never took the first bite Everyday I brought a piece of fruit to eat while the children and other teachers ate the junk food snack. Day after day...week after week. One day one of the children said....Mrs. W always eats a healthy snack! I felt like a true teacher that day. Someone...especially children....is always watching what you decide to do....good choice or bad choice.

I worked with high school students with cognitive disabilities. I remember one chubby, childlike boy who during "nutrition" break was debating over which of TWO full sized candy bars he should eat in the 10-minute break. He looked like a poster child for early diabetes. I was horrified when the adult instructional aide said, "Just have both!" She had a big heart, but was misguided by her own addictions. Later she "got religion" and lost weight. I never had the nerve to ask her if she remembered having said that to the boy and would she do it after she saw the advantages of limits . You may ask why I didn't intervene. My experience in that was that I had to pick and choose my battles.

I did 5:2 diet 8 yrs ago when I saw Dr Mosley talk about it on a show . It saved my life . I was 15 kgs overweight , high blood pressure and pre diabetic ! In six months of fasting 2 days a wk I lost 15 kgs and since have kept it off !! I don’t don’t do 2 days fasting anymore once the wt was off but I weigh myself weekly . If weight comes up 2 kgs + I fast for a day or two and it comes off . Fasting has shrunk my stomach so I get full quicker and sugar cravings are gone ! Iam now the person who doesn’t even know the cookies were there ! No desire to eat them . My diabetes is gone . Blood pressure came down and people say I don’t look my age . I’ll be 60 this yr but most people think Iam in my 40s . Fasting does amazing things to your body . It’s anti - aging .

I struggled with compulsive overeating while my children were growing up. I am thinner now at age 70. My son and my daughter are morbidly obese in adulthood. It might not be genetic but children learn how to be from watching their parents. My struggle became their struggle. I wish I had taught them how to play the piano instead.

It is partially genetics. But the person needs to be self aware of it. It’s not the type of thing where it’s your fault, it’s the whole generic pool. We live in a world where we blame ourselves for our gene. It is just luck. But basically if you have bad luck that means you have to make the choice of doing dieting or not. That’s where they come in. It’s not easy. He said it wasn’t and he has several speeches where he said it would be much harder for them; but it can be done. So at that point the choice is them

Honestly, don't beat yourself up. Studies over the past few years indicate that a lot of the gut biome is shared and similar across family members. This is believed to hugely influence how whole families can suffer from obesity or all remain thin. My siblings are all obese and I'm not. Why? I intervened markedly in what I ate in my 40s when I was getting heavier. I upped my dietary fibre greatly to feed the "good" bacteria (inulin supplementation). This has a big effect on feelings of satiety and also inflammation (via production of short chain fatty acids).

Do you walk into some shops now and not see 'food'? After a very long time of eating whole foods and no baked foods, processed, deep fried, junk I walk out of those places thinking there's nothing there to eat. I'd rather wait to get home and eat some real food and people around me have funny reactions to that. But I do think it's become unconscious over time. I just don't see 'food' anymore where there's processed, low quality, food like stuff.

Diets don't work for the most part as you can go off and on a diet, so as soon as you go off, you will return to how you were before or maybe worse. One needs to change the lifestyle that caused the overweight in the first place. This means that it's a "diet" for always which most often will sound too extreme for most people. You don't have to change it completely overnight but start eliminating what caused the overweight in the first place. Another point is that losing weight is the wrong terminology, it's losing fat that it's about and not muscle mass for example. This means that you should seek help as to which exercising and when best to do it would greatly help in the fat loss.

People told me you can't eat carbs and lose weight, you can't eat bread and you can't eat at night. I did all 3 and have lost 43 pounds so far and went from a size 20 to a 6 and also packed on muscle in the process through weight lifting. I think Mr. Yeo is very intelligent and he's right - it's what works for you that you can stick to. I can eat forever like I'm eating now. I love my carbs, especially bread (100% whole wheat) and love brown rice and oats! I eat 50% carbs and I have 20% protein a day but any more than that I have kidney stones. I also get good fats, with about 30% fats in with olive oil, avocado, nuts and flax.

@bev7236

@@JimJamJuicy No, I do eat some animal food like chicken, tuna, eggs, cheese and turkey. However, 50% of my food is carbs like bread, tortillas, rice and oats. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables too. I also have PB, beans, soymilk, etc. and guacamole, various nuts, olive oil and flax. I ate like I wanted to eat that felt healthy to me and log it in MyFitnessPal and it gives you the percentage of each macro there. That's when I noticed the trend that I eat 50% carbs, 30% fat and 20% protein. I do eat 20% not-so-clean foods sometimes like a fun-size Snickers, cookie, cereal or chips or even fast food but the other 80% mostly "clean" food like I mentioned above. I did/do a lot of exercise because I wanted to be fit above all! I've never had this much muscle before and being in my 40's, I'm glad I'm packing it on and plan on keeping up with my weight training.

What and when you eat is more about your health. The weight loss is more about sustainable caloric deficit. You can technically lose weight eating only potato chips, if you eat little of them enough to sustain a caloric deficit. Doesn't mean it's healthy.

@@ABIGPLAN I do eat for health and it's something I can maintain for life. I didn't want to just lose weight, I wanted to lose fat mostly and preserve as much muscle as possible and I, not only achieved that, but gained muscle too. I didn't tell all about how I got off a shoebox full of medicine and also have an athlete's heart now according to my doctor... But yes, the health impact was great!! That was so funny. I was #2 for many years .. would even go into the bathroom and cry because I couldn't eat a stupid piece of cake for fear I'd gain weight. Now that I'm a 71 year old vegan who regularly intermittent fasts, I'm still too heavy for my body type! I'm glad I don't have any cookies lying around, but if I did I definitely be #1 type and eat the damn cookie without worrying about what others might say. Oh, the benefits of being old. 🍷

For decades, my reason is my bad cavity - I am prone to easy and bad tooth decay; yes, it is GENETIC; the cost for dental care now in the U.S. is so expensive, so it is ~USD $10.00 worth of decadently delicious cookies that satisfy me for at most 15 minutes or >USD $800.00 of painful dental filling afterward and that I would have to live w/ for the rest of my life, if not requiring ~USD $2,500 root canal plus ~USD $1,200 porcelain crown...

You've just admitted your actual problem with your weight, being "Vegan"... You are eating too many CARBS thus your body doesn't use the Fat in your body or in food to burn as fuel, it's using only the carbs you eat, thus it never burns your excess fat. It's good you intermittent fast, but that's not going to do a whole lot for you unless you're controlling your Insulin. Eat Animal products, and go at least low-carb.
@TheMightyOdin
@TheMightyOdin 2 жыл бұрын
@@leeuniverse I disagree. Your weight is based on calories consumed. Carbs are not the enemy people make them out to be.
@leeuniverse
@leeuniverse 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheMightyOdin ... Not true. You're stating the OLD BAD "science". While it IS true that calories WILL make you obese or not depending on the amount of consumption, too many Carbs IS the primary calorie that makes a person fat, because unburned carbs turn into FAT. There aren't really "enough" carbs in other foods such as Vegitables, Meats, Nuts, etc. to be an "excess" of carbs that turns into fat, unless a person eats a crap ton, but if they do that they are technically "poisoning" their body causing various health issues, and gaining weight really isn't one of them, enough to matter anyway, because again, it's CARBS that create fat, NOT "calories". A person can eat the SAME amount of calories going low-carb or KETO, but by cutting the carbs the body doesn't have much carbs to burn as fuel, thus your body starts to burn your fat stores as fuel. Thus, both of your statements are absolutly false... Weight is NOT based on "calories" consumed, it's based on the "type" of calories. And carbs absolutely ARE an enemy for many people. That's NOT to say they are "bad", just they need to be eaten in moderation and according to activity level etc. However, too many carbs cause a multitude of health problems, which don't actually occur as much with other foods. It's been a LIE this whole time that eating "fat" is what makes a person fat, and I knew this 35 years ago. So, I know this myself. Every time I've gained weight, it's from eating too many carbs, for example when I was 16 I moved into a new home, ate a lot of cereal, and then a lot of toast after school plus regular meals, and in two months I gained 40 pounds. When I got married to a Chinese from Malaysia, I again ate a lot of good food, far more carbs than normal due to all the rice etc., and I gained a 100 pounds in a year. In contrast for example, I cut my carbs and Intermittent fasted and lost 30 pounds in 4 months, and then recently 10 pounds in a month and a half. Anyway, you need to study more... To "start" you on your journey, KZbin SEARCH the video *Your Doctor Is Wrong About Weight Loss* by Dr. Sten Ekberg. He goes into the basic SCIENCE of what I'm saying.... There's more on the subject you need to learn, but this will get you started. I recommend also videos by "motivationaldoc", Dr. Eric Berg, etc. They and more are relaying the latest actual and effective science related to weight and nutrition. And to be clear, in the comments of these peoples videos, you'll also see 1,000's of people just like me using this science to considerable success. A person "starving" themselves to lose weight (aka cutting calories) is the worst way to lose weight and is the very cause of the "yo yo" effect, why most people can't lose weight. For example when I used to Wrestle, having to "cut weight" I lost a Tournament because I got the FLU due to starving myself (aka cutting calories). So, learn the latest science, not the bad science which is unhealthy for a persons body.

What people need to learn are food that WILL satisfy them either from carbs, fats and protein. Next thing is learning portion sizes and calories, this gives you an understanding of what you’re eating so you know not to eat too much. Then there’s sugar which you don’t want to eat too much of as it’s not beneficial really, it’s a treat. Lastly, are you living an active lifestyle? like walking/biking a lot combined with your favourite forms of exercise, three times a week? We shouldn’t avoid tasty things but is it really an everyday thing to eat high calorie treats?

Basically, he advocates for not simply focusing on the calories of food (which are often not the true calories when cooked because the way we use energy to digest cooked foods differs from non-cooked foods). Focus instead on the **quality** of food you're putting into your body. So, healthy foods and more protein and fiber. Moderation diets are basically the most sustainable as you're not restricting yourself. =)

This video is mistitled. He said one statement that had to do with actually losing weight. Maybe for some people it’s news that the best diet is the one you can stick to. And I’m not saying he should’ve pointed out any particular diet that’s "right." It was disappointing to hear what he said about just automatically taking the cookie. Are there people who can get away with that for their whole life? Yes, but many people, including slim ones, eventually pay a very high price. And the rest of the insurance ratepayers or taxpayers also pay the price.

Right out of the gate, I'll say at least what I've heard in the first few minutes is just total baloney. I like cookies per say, but I hate the fact that they have something in there that is bad for me and is not a natural part of the human diet and that's refined flour, sugar, seed oils, etc. So I rarely, rarely eat cookies, dessert or junk food. Because it's not really human food and I don't really miss it much at all. Seeing things for what they are has helped me to shift my mind and thinking about food. It has nothing to do with genes. Nothing. Using genes is simply an lame excuse.
